I know I’m coming across as negative but yes this year has been extremely disappointing given the expectations we had across the board coming in. Even the coaches were saying it’s one of the best lineups ever etc… then to go 4-15 vs top 10 teams.

We could go on to Omaha and everything be right with the world but we shouldn’t even be in this spot. I haven’t given up as a fan and oconnor should definitely be given another year even if we go 2 and out in our own regional. But, disappointing YES, especially with our lack of coaching and ruining all of our pitchers performance.

MSU baseball program is legendary. THE mecca of college baseball. There are no “rebuilds” in college sports today. We should be DOMINATING this sport. We absolutely did NOT this season… so far. Hopefully we’ve been saving it all for the finish.

It's wild to call a regular season where you end up 14th in the nation "extremely disappointing"

We were top 4 preseason. I had several telling me how this was our “best team of all time”, how we couldn’t lose with our pitching, lineup, oconnor (our Nick Saban), etc… I guess it depends on how you want to look at it. To me, it’s like being an Ohio State football fan and going 9-4 and finishing #14 after stating preseason at the top. One could be filled with joy over that situation. To me, it would be underachieving.

The season isn’t over yet, and I’m hoping for an incredible finish and another national championship.

Super is a success. The preseason expectations were out of hand. I thought top 5 was just crazy for all the change in coaches and roster. Top 10-15 was my expectation and that’s exactly where we landed.

We have a regional at the Dude again! Losing the regional would be disappointing though. Need to win it.

Well, I'll say that based on your recent flurry of activity here that you definitely have a penchant for exaggerated expectations.

I didn’t make those expectations, everyone else did. We shot well below them. I’m guessing that makes you happy?

S*** happens, Shohei Ohtani has a hitting slump, oconnor stinks up the joint in almost ALL of our biggest games and causes us to not host a super, etc… let’s see how it goes from here. Lose a super, yes that’s disappointing because if we played good when we should have we wouldn’t even be going to UGA.

I hope we win out.

Yeah, I've been a State fan for 50 years and it makes me happy when we don't do as well as we could.***

I just like to live in a real world where I don't call a good, but not great, season "extremely disappointing".

And I was only bought into the idea we were a Top 5 team for about 1 week after we swept Ole Miss. Haven't you seen enough of the SEC to realize we don't have talent that is somehow well above the great teams in this league??

It would absolutely be a success. It will also be disappointing compared to how we started. I just hope we could win one there at least. Going 0-6 games to UGA would hurt.

We are THE great program in this league. Don’t make excuses for these coaches. I know baseball isn’t a sport you can flat out dominate every single year every single game… but with our unparalleled fan support, reputation, aura, prestige, etc… a program that recruits itself and is the envy of the entire college baseball world… #14 is terrible. Can we finish MUCH higher? Absolutely and we should. I was just responding to the original question in the thread.

Something I've been trying to figure out is whether this team truly failed to capitalize on expectations or if the preseason expectations were just a tad too high. I wasn't super vocal about it 6 months ago because what I do know compared to Baseball America and Perfect Game, but putting State in the preseason Top 5 always seemed like a stretch. We returned some solid pieces from a pretty mediocre team last season, and we added portal guys that definitely looked like they'd compete for opening day spots, but I don't know... I just wasn't seeing a lot of top end talent from top to bottom. I don't think we ever should've been ranked inside the Top 10 prior to playing a few games.

Except that's not how sports work at all. Especially baseball. Time again we see teams invest big money in rosters and just be terrible.
The NY Mets have the 2nd largest payroll in MLB at $369 million and are 22-32, in last place in the NL East 14 games behind the Braves. The NY Yankees had the highest payroll the entire decade of the 1980s, and made the post season twice.

Yes, college baseball is different, but as all MSU fans know, weird stuff happens.

We are a top 15 program of all time. Not sure I'd say we are legendary just yet.

Those people were idiots, and so were you, if you listened to them. Anybody could see we were thin on the mound and at catcher, just to start.

We are THE great program in this league.
No we aren't. LSU is. Hell Vandy and Carolina have more titles than us. Not to mention Texas is now here, and they are also head and shoulders above us in the tier with LSU. Ole Miss, Georgia and Florida have the same number of titles.

I don't know if you are bulldoghair or what, but you need to cut the concern troll vibe as far as our baseball program. We COULD have been legendary, had we won in 1985 and capitalized on that. But we didn't, we let LSU take our lunch money, then we allowed Ole Miss to build their program with MSU fan-recruits. It took a monumental effort to get back, missed chances in 2013 and 2016, and finally capitalized with some COVID luck and ended up literally having to fire that coach. You can't make this shlt up.

Our chance to become legendary starts with Brian O'Conner. You are showing your cards when you say he's a bad hire or whatever dumb shlt you're talking about. Saban went 6-6 his first year. 500. OC is #14 in the country right now. Give it a rest.

You obviously don’t get out much or you just aren’t very smart. Go visit some of the other stadiums. Go to the University of Texas and LSU baseball stadiums. Take it all in. Then go to Dudy Noble. It feels like you were walking in a couple of prison yards (LSU and Texas baseball stadiums) then walked straight into a palace (Dudy Noble). These programs aren’t even remotely close. I don’t know if you are just trying to be funny, but my guess is you just don’t know any better.

I think we saw the fantastic recruiting class and lost sight of the fact that we were in the first year of a coaching change after four seasons of underachievement and it is going to take some time to get minds right on this team.

At first I just thought you were kinda childish and emotionally stunted. Now I'm thinking you're a full on troll or some kind of strange AI creation.

There are just too many weirdos popping up around here lately.

Man never thought I’d defend goat. Sure our stadium and fan support is better but our program is not. We have 1 natty while LSU has 8(including 2 since we won ours) and Texas has 6. We have 12 Omaha appearances while LSU has 20 and Texas has been 38 times. Our program is awesome and it can be even better but it isn’t the best in the SEC.

would you say this year was a success?
Yes. Hosting a regional should ALWAYS be the goal every season. Judging success by that is what any premier program should do. Losing in a regional or super happens to good teams all the time, but hosting should be our goal. I do think we left good bit on the table this season with the talent in that dugout, and the fact that we spent a good part of the first half of the season in the 1-8 range.

We should also expect to be a top 8 seed every few years and expect 3-5 trips to Omaha every decade with this staff and program.

If we make a Super I would say it's a successful season. But I'm still disappointed with how our team has performed against every other team with a pulse. They don't have "it", whatever "it" is.

Du you think Skip Bertman’s goal was to host a regional? Or Cliff Gustafson? Or Augie Garrido? Or Ron Fraser? Or Mike Martin? I could go on. This is just typical small minded Mississippi state thinking. The goal is Omaha. And national championships.

I'll say it was.
I think baseball media and out fanbase (including me) over-rated this team. We thought the portal pickups would turn this team into a double digit scoring team that would over come any pitching and defensive deficiencies. Turns out, the guys from the portal counted on to step up and were initially plugged in as fielders and key reserves didn’t take the next step from where they were last year at another school. Several found out that the SEC is big boy baseball compared to where and who the played before.

even with that said, all the goals are still in front and ARE achievable with said players actually stepping up in post season! Therefore, hard to quantify and definitely hard to qualify successful.

I would advise you to not place too much stock in the regular season.
