The Chicago Cubs got better when they signed away Manager Craig Counsell from the
Milwaukee Brewers. He is the real deal.

Sweeeet, this is one of the threads I was missing from HORT. Kind of a bummer Lucas hasn't bumped over here though because he has a lot of good info.

1-3 in the NL Central is going to be brutal this year. I'm not sure how the Cards are playing like they are after selling everyone and rebuilding.

Cubs are 2-8 in their last 10, Brewers are 8-2. I didn't look to see what the records were for say last 15 or last 20.

Cubs had 30+ whiffs in the 3 game set?

They are playing some of the worst baseball imaginable

basically what I expected this team to be at the start of the season.

As of May 22, 2026

The Milwaukee Brewers have a Pitching Staff E.R.A. of 3.18
The Chicago Cubs have a Pitching Staff E.R.A. of 4.07

In the MLB season of 162 games it is pitching that wins games and division titles.

They just don't have the pitching right now with all the injuries to win games when the bats are slumping. If you have Horton & Steele in the rotation, one of them is going to give you a shut down game to bail out the offense.

The pitching injuries have just been brutal, the staff is a M.A.S.H unit.

Man this team blows right now.

Obviously the pitching injuries are playing a large role but Shota's outing Sunday was brutal. Taillon gets crushed for homers all the time now, Rea is kinda meh, etc. Second worst starting ERA in the majors since May 8th I think. The pen has some decent guys but also some real duds (see the 3rd Sox game).

What is very concerning is how much the offense fell off. They were red hot and after the Texas series have gone ice cold, especially with RISP. We've left way too many people on the bases. Terrible plate approaches, just swinging at too many pitches outside the zone. I have no clue what happened.

I'm glad that Counsell is shaking up the lineup but the FO has gotta think about a trade or two. There isn't anyone in this offense that *really* scares you at the end of the day since so many of these guys are streaky. I would love a guy like Schwarber but that is few and far between. I'd consider trading Seiya tbh. His fielding doesn't make up for his streaky hitting, especially with RISP. Also need to figure out the Busch contract situation.

Another tough nite for cubs. My white Sox joined them in the misery index as twins rally to beat Sox in the 11th inning...ouch.
Chicago baseball.... mediocrity personified.

RISP- ABSOLUTELY horrific especially when you consider the pitching woes. 1-15 yesterday RISP and in this slump just bad.

Cubs called up Kevin Alcantara last Thursday? He has gotten a grand total of 2 AB's since. I'm of the opinion that if he is up, play him. However, we all know Counsell view of rookies. SO, he'll sit some more before being sent down.

Alcantara has something like a 30% K rate in the minors. If he comes up, play him. If he isn't good enough, send him down.

Cubs get a much needed offensive explosion to snap that 10 game losing streak and beat the pirates 10-4.

Tonite vs skenes is another challenge.
Cubs in playoff hunt and have gotten the " June swoon" out of the way in May, so with a light schedule in June they will rebound,I suspect.
Brewers will have rough stretches ahead...every team goes thru it at some point in the marathon season.

2 game win streak! And, at least the Cubs did some interesting things offensively. The Pirates have been sloppy the last two games, but the Cubs exploited the opportunities the Pirates gave them. PCA made one overly aggressive move on the bases, but, still, it could be a real catalyst if he's going to get on base and do PCA things again. .
Cabrera is close to returning after throwing a bullpen session. Boyd is close to returning with a rehab start scheduled for Sunday.
