This is the indefensible thing about Rhule.

He could have got a real group…plenty of $$ to work with and he had actual clout at the time.

He turned it into the same deal as me sending one of my kids to the concession stand at some horrid baseball game with $5 and them coming back with 2 blow-pops.
Yep

great analogy. We ended up with a flop uncle o line coach and a 23 year old “coaching frat” hire. Just for starters.

More Like taking the kids to haymarket park with $100 and instead of bringing back a cold beer and nice burger, it’s some stale sweet tea with no ice and petrified licorice from the 90s. Lots stronger options with the resources Nebraska has

The Satterfield hire said everything I needed to know.

This one hire set the table for his tenure. He needed a Tony White version for OC and he picked his neighborhood buddy who was a stoner, lost 3 jobs and got kicked out of school to be his guy. The fact Rhule looked at Satts body of work, how S.Carolina was responding and still wanted THAT guy? Said it all.

His offensive hires made the anti-Rhule crowd guaranteed to be right. My co-workers were all pissed at me for saying he was an automatic fail and should be fired in four years, his offensive and special teams hires were all nepotism based which either spoke to him not giving a f___ or to him being so offensively incompetent that he just fell back on guys he knew. He actually might have thought that defense would carry him. Lol

It was supposed to be Mickey Joseph at WR but Mickey had an incident so can't blame Rhule for that, you can however blame him for choosing a 12 year old instead.

Iirc Jake Peetz from the Rams was supposed to be QB coach/ Co-OC but he smartly turned it down.

My question though was how much of his staff debacle was caused by trying to hire guys with NU ties? Remember he had pressure to hire Mickey and the QB coach/co-OC Peetz. Then Mickey had his issue and Peetz backed out late. That combined with almost having to keep Raiola probably doomed his offensive staff. I don’t think Satt would have been calling plays if Peetz had landed in Lincoln. His DC hire looked pretty damned good at the time but he never really committed to being at NU long term.

Can’t argue. It seemed Rhule didn’t have a backup option for several coaching positions

How is no one mentioning the worst hire ever made? The 23 year old with no previous experience coaching or playing WR to coach WRs just because his dad was friends with Rhule and Rhule liked his energy?
Rhule was like "I enjoy giving young guys a chance"

Okay, great...so hire him at a slightly lower level position to start...

It was a horrible hire and production for us, but what’s crazy is boy wonder’s group at Texas Tech finished better than ours in almost every statistical category. Oh, and it was his first year as a RB coach. Not really sure what to make of the entire thing.

The problems came back to Mickey and Peetz. Those guys put Rhule in a huge bind very late in the process. In hindsight, he would have probably been better off reaching down for a more experienced guy but I believe the thought process was that this kid is very bright and has been around football with his dad his whole life. He can handle a position. It didn’t work out great but some of that was the guys he had to coach. You wait. That kid will be a D-1 coach someday.

We had a weak group for him to coach and a poor OC. He took the fall.

Mickey and Peetz were not the only available options. And whose fault was it that it was so late in the process? Oh right that would be Rhule dragging his feet for more money. Remember we were without a coach and he was without a job for months before he finally gave in and said yes.Because he really would have rather sat out the year and counted his Panther money. And, the fact that Rhule did have so few options in his address book pretty much tells us everything we need to know. A better coach has better contacts. The guy’s been all (backward) hat and no cattle since he got here.

Rhule was under no pressure to hire Nebraska guys. That is total bs and just trying to put lipstick on the pig of Rhule’s failures. He had ample time to put together a top flight staff. Even as he dragged his feet about taking the job he could have been contacting coaches to gauge interest and send out feelers. But the fact is, nobody of quality was in his rolodex and nobody of quality wanted to coach under him. If they did, they would have come a knocking on his door. Especially since NU was willing to pay damn well. But nobody came knocking on his door.
My best guess is that in reality Rhule really was ambivalent about the job but did it in the end for the money. Period. Full stop. I don’t think he gives a rat’s $ss about Nebraska, its people, or our football program. He doesn’t give a crap about anything but his bank account and he is grifting the university and fleecing it for all he can.
