Between the insider trading, money being speech, corporations being people, the quid pro quo of dark money bribes, SCOTUS self policing their corruption, oligarchs formerly paying for a ballroom on the White House grounds, oligarchs packing out the inauguration, oligarchs joining Trump to meet Xi, and many such other examples makes me think there will have to be a reckoning in the near future.

$173K isn't a lot of money in civilized locations ... that's especially so if you essentially have to establish 2 bases of operation while working.

He's correct to point that out.

However, the answer isn't to allow them to "do some stock trading" ... without a heckuva lot more in play ... like ending lobbying, ending all the money pouring into campaigns (and elsewhere), actual enforcement of securities laws, etc.

If you give Congresspeople a raise ... the questionable financial behavior ... the kickbacks, the bribes, the money pouring in and the big pay off at the end of it all for a "job well done" while in office ... they aren't going away ... nothing will change except taxpayers will be paying even more in to support the higher salaries ... unless you fundamentally change the system in ways I indicated.

President Donald Trump scooped up shares of artificial intelligence software maker Palantir weeks before he famously lauded the stock, with its ticker symbol, on his social media platform Truth Social, according to records released this week by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.

The records show thousands of transactions during the first quarter totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, with each trade listed as a price range.

I would bet that it never happens. The people who are in a position to do the reckoning are the same ones that would stand to lose from a change in the rules. The gravy train works as well as it does because all of them are on there together. You get elected to get a seat on the train, and then you do everything you can to keep that seat for as long as possible (until even after you're physically/mentally unable to do your job any longer).

Like those pesky socialist programs no one forces you to take, right Ned?
well, not exactly like that because the government forces people like me to participate in social security and Medicare....no one forces anyone to run for a $174,000 job. See the difference?

You can try to make me feel upset about taking funds from programs I'm forced to participate in, but I'm a
"stay within the lanes" kind of person. I don't have any problems with people in need participating in the "socialist" programs, and I've never denied or taken positions that we don't have such programs already in our government. So I don't know where you're trying to take me relative to "socialist" programs, but knock yourself out.

I really don't get this socialism hate. The military is 100% socialism. Same with the constant bailouts of farmers. And Republicans love both of those. Why is that form socialism something to be celebrated but feeding kids something to be disdained?

I guess that's an accurate statement, but why would I decline something I paid for? Does that make any sense to you? Isn't socialism a concept of equality for all? I gave in, paid for others now you are supposed to pay for me..

So I take it from you chain of questioning that you're all in on socialism. Or are you struggling to make some other point?

He’s poking because of the propaganda on the right keeps using socialist as a slur against anything on the left, without acknowledging that many, many things that are part of our government and daily life are in some part “socialist”. And while you may not disagree with those things, and while there may be a small minority on the left that are true full socialist, using the socialist or communist brush to paint the entire Democratic Party is foolish and straight propaganda.

So while your individual beliefs don’t agree with that characterization, your words often do. They are trying to drag that out of you. Possibly going overboard or using borderline bullying, but it can be frustrating seeing propaganda being accepted so I get it too.

Oh I get his points..by the way I agree with your first paragraph and I fully expect to see videos of that DSA co chair all over Republican ads this fall. But, as I posted, in my opinion, democrats are bringing this on themselves, The DSA is a separate party, they had their own convention, have their own platform - which is not the Democrat platform - and yet are running as democrats. If Dems don't want to be associated with that platform they should force the DSA candidates to run that way and nominate their separate Democrat candidates. They won't do that though because it's likely that without the DSA candidates running as democrats, republicans would likely keep the house. it's all about power...and republicans would do the same thing if situations were reversed.

I have already acknowledged the presence of socialist type programs in the US. And, I fully believe in the need for them.

These days if it weren't for propaganda there would be little for us to discuss. I don't know why the OP didn't just come out and make the point you did. I would have agreed with him, probably.

For years I have been complaining that Bernie wrongly called himself a Democratic socialist instead of what he actually is which is a social democrat. So right now we have some people that are actually DSA, and we have people calling themselves Democratic Socialists because Bernie did. Often times when people are saying they are Democratic Socialists they are saying they are Bernie types, and they may or may not even know the DSA or what they are about.

To be fair we also have the same issue when some people say they are a classical liberal which as that term mostly is the same as saying a libertarian. While some people know the term and use it properly, other people hear it and say "oh yeah, I am a classical liberal too."

Even with politically knowledgeable people on this board I have noticed most people don't know the differences. So fully expect to see these words misused both here and especially in the news as DSA is an easy slander with a much more extreme platform than Bernie types.

I don't think you do get my points. Roads, water, electricity. You use all these everyday. None if these would be possible about socialism. All of you Conservative bums do. And you love it.

But the second some poor kid needs food or housing, you blow a gasket.

Socialism attempts to provide basic needs for all citizens and reducing large gaps between the rich and poor. No one wants that, right?

The SS fund runs out in 6 years Ned. If we continue spending on the dumbest possible sh't, it will likely be gone before I retire. Isn't that fun? Your generation got their benefits, pull that ladder up my man. Who GAF about anyone else as long as you got your "fair share". Just because I have paid in for 36 years doesn't mean I am entitled to it because "no one wants socialism" right? We on the same page now?
