I'll deal with real injuries for this kid and guys like Butler any day of the week as opposed to "swollen knee" aka lack of heart and balls.
It’s not even close, BCG is miles worse. While we don’t agree on Pope at all, and we could spend a long while discussing that, Pope is the worst coach we’ve ever had at UK. The only debate is whether or not he’s worse than Gillispie, and there is an argument that he is. I can prove that factually. It’s not hate, Pope is not build for power programs. You’ve done this long enough you should easily see that. Gillispie was so far and away a better recruiter than Pope it’s not arguable in the least. Gillispie was also a better coach, commanded teams to play his style much better, and he was a good developer too, superior to Pope.
Gillispie’s down fall was not in recruiting (like Pope) or in evaluations (like Pope). Gillispie was an alcoholic, basketball subject matter was not his issue. He would have been a good coach, although probably not UK good, had he remained straight and had his mental health in order.
Mark has full command of his mental health and he’s not an alcoholic. It’s fine if we want to throw it in a vacuum and say he is better than Gillispie. But no one, none, would take Pope over Gillispie when it comes to basketball alone in the basketball world.
Pope is so bad at recruiting it’s hard to fathom any UK fan not understanding where this is headed. Pope is also atrocious at understanding analytics, which is surprising. He clearly doesn’t understand how to apply data to sports. Pope is a train wreck of a UK coach. If he wasn’t I wouldn’t say it. I’m not using hyperbole. When you add that he can buy rosters, lbs for lbs, he is the worst coach in UK history as far as basketball alone goes.
It’s been well documented that Pope and Hart disagreed often on substitution patterns during games this year. And after Brooks and Hart left we were told that one left voluntarily and the other was asked to move on. You don’t leave UK to go to SMU for a lateral move. Hart moved on because he didn’t want to be here. How do you know that?
How can you say this isn’t the worst shape our program has been in minus probation? Pope has lost 26 games in two years, multiple blowout losses including being behind by 20+ in the first half of how many games? We played on Wednesday of the SECT for the first time ever. He can’t recruit at a UK level. You wanna bet?
The only reason I'm defending Pope, is the amount of bs hate and critisism on the board is way over the top. I have shared my critisisms of the guy, but we have too many "fans" saying this is the worst coach in UK history and the worst shape this program has ever been. Both statements are ridiculous and not even close to true.
BTW, can you refute anything I stated in the post you quoted?
And yes…Washington went 16–17.Second transfer from UW.
What was UW record last year? 16-17? Is that correct?
I am sure Pope will “coach him up” next year.
He is going to be 25 years old next season? Is that correct?
There is absolutely, positively nothing exciting about this recruit for me. Nothing.
Nearly 50 year passionate fan of UK basketball, this is the worst state the program has been in.
Even in probation years, Pitino competency, coaching, recruiting, basketball style and program management gave hope during the tough years. You knew it was matter of time before he returned UK to the top.
Pope zero trust and confidence, which continues to be reinforced and rightfully earned with this off season **** show.
Hate bitching and hate negative comments. But they are recurring earned.
The day Pope and Administration get things back to UK standards and winning ways (I have zero confidence this will happen) I welcome opportunity to get back on the earned positive bandwagon.
Ridiculous. How can you say this isn’t the worst shape our program has been in minus probation? With all that said, it doesn’t mean that he can’t turn it around. I’m cautiously optimistic with this years roster, especially if we can add Momcilovic.
Are you young? Like, really young? Tubby's last 2 years had 2 fewer wins and 1 fewer loss, 2 straight first weekend exits. Then we rolled into Billy G who in 2 years had 6 fewer wins and 1 more loss, missed the tournament, and lost first round. How can you say this isn’t the worst shape our program has been in minus probation? Interesting take for sure. And yes…Washington went 16–17.
Congratulations on discovering Google.
But guess what?
Pope isn’t recruiting Washington’s record.
He’s recruiting Washington’s grown‑man center who fits the system.
You say there’s “nothing exciting” about this recruit? That’s because you’re still addicted to the Calipari dopamine drip of 5‑stars and mixtapes.
Pope is out here building a TEAM, not a highlight reel.
BBN is only big enough for one Bum. One Bum and a lot of Peters.Calling players bums is a bad look. Understandable why this board is going away.
No. I've been watching UK for 40 years. Are you young? Like, really young? Tubby's last 2 years had 2 fewer wins and 1 fewer loss, 2 straight first weekend exits. Then we rolled into Billy G who in 2 years had 6 fewer wins and 1 more loss, missed the tournament, and lost first round.
I reckon that I just don't understand what your expectations of a back up center are.to me this is either:
(a) a budget gamble in order to offer milan money
or
(b) the staff feels it cant do better with any other prospects at a backup 5 position
either way.....doesnt feel great
Obviously granting JQ but who are the other injury prone players when we recruited them?I hope the big guy can get a waiver and stay healthy. But I don't want to hear anyone here make excuses about injuries hurting our season when we keep recruiting injury prone players.
So? We took their mostly starter and made him our backup.Washington was god awful last year.
