I get people's frustration; I have enough for several people but all this back and forth about Pope being so bad is nuts.

Pope might be as bad as many on this site says, but when I saw this, I had to read it twice.

So, if Mark Pope is so bad and Cal is so good, then will one of these smart anon's explain this stat?

Looks like with all that talent Cal still can not win the big games. So why not cut Pope some slack until we see how all this plays out.

So both are trash? At least one of them isn't our problem anymore.

Who said anything about Cal? The whole reason we were happy when Cal left was because we thought things would improve.

Cal sucks too, doesn’t excuse Pope’s piss poor recruiting and record though.

Cal’s at Arkansas. Pope’s at Kentucky. Arkansas is not Kentucky. They’re not expected to win national titles there.

You know deep down he doesn’t suck. You’re a better poster than this.

You don’t get into the HOF because you suck. The man has the number 1 recruiting class and is coming off a 29-8 season with a SEC tournament trophy and back to back Sweet 16’s. He had some down years. It literally happens to every coach in every sport.

Cal is a top 10 all time college basketball coach and a media darling. We need to quit acting like the man doesn’t deserve the credit. It’s weird.

I mean i cant speak for others, but if im gonna be a team that wins 20 games and makes a s16 i wanna look down my bench and see guys like acuff, thomas and richmond on it

Never in my life (besides the pope era) do we line up to play against a team and just dont have the guys to do it

Cal got into the Hall of Fame when he cared. His style is outdated and his recent record is mediocre. That’s why he left here. It’s a fact. Look at the last 7 years of his record. He’s not interested in winning games anymore. He hit his personal goals and now all he cares about is acting like Mother Teresa and how many guys “he” made millionaires. Which today they need no help. Just existing high in the ranks guarantees that.

I want these guys to be self motivated when they get here and have each other’s backs. Pope either can’t or don’t know how to motivate players. I’ll be pulling for whatever our team looks like to win every game despite my feelings about Pope as a coach

I’ll get crucified by some for this, but I would rather have a team of guys that know their role and execute it really well with no alpha than a team with a bunch of guys just trying compliment one star. If everyone that we’ve gotten buys into their role and we get a handful of double digit scorers then I think we can shock a lot of people

When you say shock what do you mean? Like that Kentucky won't be one of the worst teams in the SEC, that we will make it to the NCAA tournament or that we could be national contenders? Is Kentucky at a point now where the expectations are not be trash and as long as we aren't garbage then we are shocking people? Is that seriously where the program is?

I think calling either one of them trash is childish hyperbole. I give Cal immense credit for making us a powerhouse again for 10 years but if you choose to take the championship angle Cal went his last 10 seasons here without one and Pope has only had two seasons with extremely difficult schedules and extremely bad luck with injuries.

When half the people on here are saying we will have a new coach by January, lose 20 games, and make the NIT, I think that tells you where most view the program

Why do people post about the questioning of how bad Pope is? He is the worst Kentucky Coach in my lifetime. That goes back to the Joe "Blowout" Hall days.

That’s not “most” that’s the 2% and handful of the sky is falling posters. They don’t live in reality and have knee jerk reactions that hinge on every decision. Like I say, “it’s never as bad or as good as you think it is.” The truth is typically somewhere in between. I actually think this team will likely be Popes best yet, but it still isn’t a team that meets the Kentucky Standard IMO. I will still cheer them on regardless and stand behind the Cats. It’s okay not to like the trajectory and results we’ve been seeing but still root for the players who came here and want to play. It’s not a one or the other. Life is full of ebbs and flows and so is basketball. Ups and downs have occurred all throughout our history.

You can love Cal or hate him. But for you to compare him to Pope as far as coaching goes, is foolish.

Nah this will be his best 17-15, but more likely 13-19 team yet.
Im pretty sure you are not stupid enough to believe that. I get your frustration and share it but the players we have at this point are better than most of the teams they are scheduled play. Do we need a strong wing player still... yes but your hate of Pope is causing you to diminish these players.

I did not compare him to Cal. Your comprehension ability is just very poor. You might trying reading that post again though I'm not very confident it will help anything.

I was never part of the vast majority hell bent on running Cal off in the first place. I wasn't crushed nor did I complain when he left but I wasn't nearly as down on him as most. Losing to Oakland with two lottery picks on our roster was absolutely indefensible though.

that would be the National recruiting / transfer rating system.
we are grabbing B players from C teams. My hate for Pope is because of his inability to make us relevent. we are closer to a syracuse.
our 2 new players are ranked 206 and 315.
i have never seen either of them play because their teams sucked

We shall see, I don’t see a highly competitive roster yet.

Zoom Dialo had a solid Washington roster to work with, they were terrible.

Wilkins has massive potential, but taking a step up in competition every night.

The Forward from Spain looks to be a legit D1 prospect, but how good we won’t know.

Moreno needs a massive leap to be a starting caliber center on a great team.

Kam Williams again potential, but not production.

No idea how Hawthorne will play.

Mcbride is a bench player or maybe a 6th man type.

Noah is basically a nothing burger.

The guard we just got from Washington State is a pure bench role.

Williams/Hawthorne 2nd are basically walk ons at this point.

We lack serious star power and shooting right now. How anyone can look at this squad at constructed and believe they will be anything more than a bottom 5 SEC type team is beyond me. Could they be better, of course but in no way without seeing them play can we expect anything great right now. Add in Pope’s history of pretty much guaranteed 11 type loss teams and you can where I’m getting 17 win vibes from this group I’d hope. Feel free to argue against it for why we will approach 25+ wins and anything to be excited about. I’d love to hear it.

A couple guys ranked similar in the previous portal. Those guys ranked 206 can make great pieces and produce. You have to have them on every team.

Camron fletcher 235
Cade Tyson 247
Jaylen Carey 222
