They didnt just leave it there, did they? Anyone know? If so, lost some respect.
Far as I know you cant legally harvest any animal you hunt and leave it there. Still happens obviously, especially in Pennsylvania rifle season when yuppies and muppears whack a buck that doesn't meet antler restrictions.

What the he'll is going on in Iowa city?

Friend, either you're closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge, or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated.

Well, ya got trouble, my friend, right there. I say, trouble right there in Iowa City with a capital "T" that rhymes with "B" and stands for Brands.

Here’s the video they put out for the hunt:

Not anti-hunting (did it myself when younger). Do understand that Alaska has an abundance of brown bears (much larger cousin of the grizzly) that can be legally hunted. Totally get anyone’s desire to trek through beautiful country on an adventure, and fully appreciate Bo’s precision shot that appeared to provide a quick end and be the only bullet needed.
Just didn’t like seeing that magnificent bear tumble down that hill, dead. :(

Alaska regs. are different. Before a certain date the meat must be taken. After a certain date the taking of the meat is not necessary. I hunted black bear in Alaska and was aware of the regulations. I believe the date for black bear, where I was… May 30th.
Also, most will take the backstraps and the roasts off of the hind legs. Bears don’t have a tremendous amount of meat up front.

That's neat to learn. I've never heard of that. Out of curiosity, why is the meat not necessary at certain times? I've never had success with black bear, yet. Haven't tried much either. If the one keeps demolishing my bird feeder and trash I may try harder.

They most likely caped it, quartered it, and hauled it out in bags carried in their backpacks. That’s the standard practice for most big game hunts in remote areas. Whatever is left meat and bones wise is usually consumed by carrion birds, scavengers, and bugs.
I hope so.

Just did a quick check of regulations: grizzly or brown bear. You only need to pack out the hide and skull anytime during the year. Black bear… hide, skull and meat , January to June otherwise only hide and skull.
into summer the meat is not tasty and may be parasite infected.

Obviously it’s April.…. I can’t imagine not trying to get out as much meat as possible. I’ve probably taken a dozen elk, so my psyche aches thinking about where they shot that bear and how hard it will be to pack him out. He has to be 800+ pounds. Ugh. Awesome shot though.

Likewise not anti-hunting if done legally and respectfully. However, not a fan of hunting videos and wasn't expecting to find one on this site.

Fair enough. Thanks for the information. Maybe some day I'll be able to get to Alaska.

The grizzly is actually a sub-species of the brown bear and not a cousin. All grizzlies are brown bears, but not all brown bears are grizzlies.

As a hunter and fisherman all of my life, that was (and still is) a magnificent animal. That tumble was the finality of the circle of life - much like a beef that gets whacked at the processing plant that no one ever cares to think about.

Speaking for yourself? Or just going for hyperbole?

There are plenty of vegetarians, vegans, and raw vegans. There are whole religions that hold a sacred place for cows.

There is a reason you see more plant-based proteins in the supermarkets.

Many have seen "Food, Inc" and been affected by it (or the more recent "73 Cows").

Personally, I am not a fan of paid trophy hunts (or even planted bird hunts), even as I was raised by an avid PA hunter. It just doesn't seem right to take such a long-lived magnificent creature from such remote location, that was simply living its life.

I'm not big on the paid trophy hunting thing myself but that's basically what funds conservation for most of those species AND probably the most pleasant way any wild animal could die is by being harvested by someone hunting. Otherwise it's disease, starvation and predation. If I were a cape buffalo I'd rather get shot by a rich dentist than my *** chewed off by a pack of wild dogs because I got stuck in a wallow or whatever else. Nature is beautiful and it is violent.

So that's how you want to go out then?

I guess people could save on funeral costs if you have a hunting accident in a remote wilderness.

Exactly what did that Grizzly in Alaska need conservation from?

There are alternatives to go out peacefully. That's in your control. The bear isn't given a choice. I bet it would've preferred to live. It was the apex predator in that natural habitat.

Based on the ending result, that grizzly was clearly not the apex predator in that habitat - Bo was.

Are you familiar with the funding behind wildlife conservation efforts and how those dollars are utilized?

Like misa, I'm also not a fan of trophy hunting but I'm not going to get sanctimonious on the people who do it. (Just so its not endangered or protected species and its done within the rules.)

When you said trophy hunting, my mind went to Africa. Regardless, the vast majority of conservation efforts are funded by outdoorsman, license sales and taxes on outdoors related gear. I'm not saying a bear wouldn't "want to live" I am saying how do you think they die in the wild normally? It's brutal. I won't feel bad about ethically harvesting any animal. We're animals as well. We hunt as a lot of others do. It's just that humans are the true apex predators.

That's some heavy duty spin right there. Kill quickly, perhaps in prime of life, to avoid a potential less pleasant death later (perhaps years later). Gotcha.

I believe you are correct and 800 may be on the low end. You’re packing out back straps and roasts. The heaviest is probably the hide and skull.
