To still be competing at such a high level at his age is phenomenal. And the fact he is wrestling at a weight class over 26 pounds heavier than his original Senior freestyle weight makes it that much more impressive.
Reminds me of that idiot Grizzly Man that thought he could just camp out and chill with bears peacefully. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't on the "winning side" like Bo was...

I went on a bear watching trip to Katmai NP in 2023. It was late in the year so they were foraging along a valley full of braided streams and not near that famous waterfall. We took a float plane in, walked across a grassy flat about a 1/4 of a mile to the banks of the shallow valley and, bam, huge brown bears everywhere. We walked amongst them - huddling in a small group if one of them came closer than 20 yards or so in order to not look threatening, but none of them cared much. Why pay attention to us when there were hundreds of exhausted protein and fat rich salmon just moseying by - too tired to try and escape.
Our guide carried a few road flares, not bear spray because the wind was so strong and swirling it would just as likely blow back onto you. I asked about the flares and she said - Bears have never seen fire. You pop one of these and it starts hissing and sparking and they haul ***. Ingenious. I’ve carried my share of bear spray and I’m always afraid if I got charged I’d fumble the trigger or spray myself in the panic. Road flares are ******* simple.
My bear count went from about 6 in the wild to 40+ in a matter of about 4 hrs on the ground. Plus the float plane ride was awesome. As we took off and circled around the valley, there were bears everywhere. ******* amazing.
You can watch a ton of bears at garbage dumps in northern PA. No cost. Don’t have to leave your truck.
The McKean County dump in Hutchins was across the road from a girl scout camp. A college room mate took me to that dump and counted 26 bears.

Read a story I believe was in SI years ago about Matt Suhey and Walter Payton on a hunting trip in Alaska. Story went they heard a large bear outside their tent that woke them up. Walter starts putting on his hikers and Matt laughs saying " you'll never outrun that bear!" Walter tells Matt "I only have to outrun you!"

Up to 17 in the wild, all in Montana and Wyoming. Hope to reach my goal of 20 before ever hitting Alaska for that very different type of access. Do like the road flare tip and will incorporate it into hikes this fall in British Columbia.

at Bo for taking another grizzly I’d have a chance to see out of service, but, hey, hunting them is legal in certain places, so I’ll only say, “nice shot!” Three of my favorites from Yellowstone NP.

They didnt just leave it there, did they? Anyone know? If so, lost some respect.
They most likely caped it, quartered it, and hauled it out in bags carried in their backpacks. That’s the standard practice for most big game hunts in remote areas. Whatever is left meat and bones wise is usually consumed by carrion birds, scavengers, and bugs.
