Idk about dogging him, but he's not a starter on a team that contends for the natty...unless the rest of the lineup is far superior to him.I was all about signing Rancik. The folks dogging that kid don't know ball

If that were his only issue...When the hell will Pope wake up and hire a freaking GM?
Rancik is ranked like 98th and we cant close lol. Freeman is top 25.Thought we had a shot at both, now we likely get neither. I know now both were never an option, but you can't miss on both. These guys aren't even top 25 portal guys. The Pope era is frustrating.
The game has evolved a tad in the last 29 years.I've been tripping about a lot of Pope related things since November or so. Now that we have Zoom, and Wilkins ... I am going to chill and let it play out. Hope we get Moreno back and he learns to rebound with two hands ... I wouldn't mind us getting the little guard from Jackson State if he is still available , as a scoring guard off the bench. Arizona won it in 97 with Davidson and Bennett as the PF and C ...who are those guys? Exactly ... with good guard play and hopefully some Andrew Carr type big, etc ... we will be okay. I think we will be okay. Landing Wilkins seems to have shaken a lot of the ANON negative Nancy's away. I hope.
Pope's recruiting is more like a turd in the hand. You think you can get a handle on it but it keeps slipping out of your grip and by the end you're just covered in sh*t
and what exactly would a GM do....When the hell will Pope wake up and hire a freaking GM?
AccurateHe did. They're just embarassed to call him the GM because no one knows who the f*ck he is. Some Mormon kid named Keegan.
Reason #432 why you sign the lesser player first.Nah, thats not true. The kid led them to believe it was a done deal, then once Rancik signed at FSU, he started calling other schools looking for offers. Thats called being bent over. Maybe you will kiss him when he finishes up, but me, I am going for the grab and rip technique
Those people believe in free market capitalism for the elite, not others. They desperately want to cap what these college athletes can make.Same. Considering the political leanings of Kentucky, I think it’s safe to assume most here are “free” market loving capitalists. Then some blame kids for trying to capitalize on their talents and situations. At least it makes for decent irony.
Pope isn't cut out for that part of the game.He doesn't seem to learn. When you made the best offer to Freeman and he said I will tell you tomorrow you say no, you tell us today or we give the money to Rancik. That is not giving up on the recruit, that is setting a deadline so you can protect yourself.
Thanks for the update. Matt has said we will likely fill out the roster with a foreign player or two. Seems like a lot of the best ones are at that power forward or center position. Maybe that’s the direction we end up going, I just hope we can find a starter quality option late in the process.Pope is in a hard spot with Freeman. According to Matt they held off on Rancik waiting to get Freeman. Matt said once Rancik signed with Florida St. Kentucky tried all day to get Freeman to commit but wasn't successful. Then due to Freemans agent shopping him around St. Johns came in and beat UK's offer. Mat says the St. Johns folks will be hard to beat money wise as to keep in mind they do not have to fund football, so they have deep pockets solely for basketball. At this point I would call Freeman and match St. Johns offer with the understanding that if he doesn't accept on the spot then we move on. I wouldn't let a past injury prone player hold us hostage for really more money than he is worth. Pope is in a hard spot here as if he meets St. Johns offer and the kid signs here and misses games he will be crucified.
Ask all the other schools what their GMs do. We are one of the only ones that don't have oneand what exactly would a GM do....
You do realize closing is an EXTREMELY big part of recruiting, correct? Hell, any dipstick can see who the best/better players are.I don't think Pope is a bad recruiter, he's a bad closer. He's too nice. He may be too nice to be the coach at Kentucky too.
The same Matt that said we would either have Freeman or Rancik by yesterday? He seems to have a lot of problems with these claims. Thanks for the update. Long story. Spent a few years in South America. Brazilian bookies have unusual methodsWell, that's enlightening, and tells us more about you and where you're coming from than anything.
How many turds have you held in your hand, or attempted to hold in your hand? Was this a passing fetish or something you did for a paycheck during tougher times? What possessed you to grab turds?
The absence of a GM is not the problem.Oh absolutely. It's mind-blowing that we still don't have a GM. Pope does fine getting kids interest but he can't close the deals. That's where the GM comes in and gets it done.
Exactly. That’s exactly how you’re gonna have to play this agent crap. You’re gonna have to make the guys think that they’ve got a pretty good deal and take it now. Giving these guys literally weeks to bargain is not going to work.
You aren't wrong, but its where we areThose are two seriously big "ifs".
Were you? Its pretty obvious what happened my manWere you in on any of these conversations between UK and Freeman? Appreciate your morality, but you have no clue how these discussions went.
What is? It's not money. They're interested enough to visit. The absence of a GM is not the problem.
A quality hire at GM would definitely help when it comes to the contract and negotiations with agents. Not many coaches are qualified to do that and a true GM with real world experience would help tremendously in that aspect. The absence of a GM is not the problem.
Oh wow thanks ! Had no clue. The game has evolved a tad in the last 29 years.
FairYou aren't wrong, but its where we are
Should have took rancic. He probably just determined his fate with that mess upSounds like a Mark Pope recruitment.
He was never coming hereYou don't get it.
2 days ago...Freeman was the safe play. So what happened??
Honestly? Neither. If I were a freshman I'd go with Cal because (even considering the Karter Knoxes and DeJuan Wagners), he's made his reputation on guys like AD, SGA, DB, etc.--and this year with Darius Acuff-- as still the king of OADs. And until his rep for this starts losing its shine, he's still viewed as the guy who cares more about having more NBA lottery picks than Nattys. Also, one elephant in the room. Money is part of it but if you were a college kid that wanted to go pro. Would you want to play for Pope or Pitino?
offer the most money to a recruit....got it. ground breakingAsk all the other schools what their GMs do. We are one of the only ones that don't have one
Sounds like a Mark Pope recruitment.
Apparently, it's long division thoughNo reason he couldn't get them both. You sign the lesser player first. Ain't rocket science.
We could've closed on Rancik...that's the issue.Rancik is ranked like 98th and we cant close lol. Freeman is top 25.
Can he play PF?He's not even the most famous Keegan Brown.
If you Google his name, a professional darts player comes up.
Starting is earned & if Ky BB history teaches anything, assuming who is a starter in April when the season starts in November can lead to big disappointments. Examples are DJ Wagner & Brandon Garrison instead of Reed & Moreno.Idk about dogging him, but he's not a starter on a team that contends for the natty...unless the rest of the lineup is far superior to him.
If rumors are true about Freeman’s price tag, St. John’s offering him 4 million, letting him move on would be the smart choice if he can’t be haggled down. Overpaying players to sign them tickles fans because they get the dopamine rush of vicarious success. It, however, hurts in the short and long run. In the short term, it gives less money to pay others. In the long term, you become an tool
for leverage in negotiation. That’s why it’s important to have a GM or someone like that to handle these things. Coaches and their assistants in the midst of a season need to be focused on the season.

Rancik would have started at Ky & it will be torture next year when he proves all his BBN supporters were right about him.
GO BIG BLUE![]()
The 1,2, and 4th ranked S4/PF are still out there now, after Freeman at 9 then YIKES!!!Trouble is all that's left for that position is straight out trash.
I mean...he seems better than current options. But again, he's not a starter on a title contender. Just like Potter isn't a rotation piece on a title contender. There's one common denominator amongst elite teams, they all have elite players.Starting is earned & if Ky BB history teaches anything, assuming who is a starter in April when the season starts in November can lead to big disappointments. Um, Bubba Pope did that already. Not a GM in sight to stop himoffer the most money to a recruit....got it. ground breaking
