This staff waits too long on guys and end up sacrificing a player they could get.

When Rancik was ready to accept, a call should have been placed to Freeman letting him know we needed a decision. At that point, we had the leverage. Is Freeman healthy likely better? Sure! Is Rancik likely more than serviceable? Sure! We should have told Freeman his max offer then and let him decide on the spot. If he said no or he needed more time, we should have taken Rancik on the spot.

At that point we would have a guy and if Freeman decides later he wants to come, we work it out then. 1 in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.
This seems so obvious...how they aren't able to effectively do business is truly mind blowing.

Why do people get mad at players that are trying to get the best deal for themselves? Do you personally like to make the most money you can your family ? Different day and age today. I don’t blame payers or agents. It’s part of the game
Exactly. Every single person on this board would get as much money as they could. People apparently have a really hard time imagining themselves in someone else’s shoes.

He's dug his own grave. He was begged to get one for this upcoming do or die season and now we are missing on a top target. The drop from Freeman to the next PF is huge.

Thanks Pope. Thanks Mitch.
What do you think Wright to Diallo is going to be? It was the same way 100% projected to be here 2 days later he was returning to BYU.

I would never have waited on this kid. Pope should have said to Freeman's agent, look, I've got another guy lined up. You've got ten minutes to figure things out. You're on the clock.
I think this is the point. Pope shouldn’t be speaking with agents. A GM, who is versed in this area of negotiation should be speaking with agents.

Oh absolutely. It's mind-blowing that we still don't have a GM. Pope does fine getting kids interest but he can't close the deals. That's where the GM comes in and gets it done.

Moreno was a pretty solid rebounder.
I agree and I really like that kid ... but he had a bad habit of going for rebounds with one hand sometimes....he lost the ball out of bounds randomly at times. I really like Moreno. I remember the days of just knowing they are freshmen and they can grow. Would have loved for Jasper to hang around and develop , ...same with Travis Perry.

They're getting massively ripped off by crackhead "street agents." The NBA caps agent fees at 4% and forces them to be registered. NIL street agents are taking 25% and could literally be anybody, including the guy who negotiated your last drug deal. Every pro sports league already figured this out and there's a reason they have these rules.

You also let Freeman camp know that when we take Rancik, we can no longer offer Freeman as much if he decides later he still wants to come. And as our offer decreases, it likely causes his offers from other schools to decrease because his demand is less.

That is how you build and play leverage 101.

My friend, I have been in business a long time and made pretty good money, and do you know what I never did? I never went back on my word. Your word is who you are. I don't tell folks, that sounds good, you have a deal, and then open the bidding back up when they have lost their other options. There is nothing wrong with trying to make all the money you can, there is also nothing wrong with a company walking away from you on principle. I would walk away from Freeman

Yep. That is why you hire a GM to handle these negotiations.

Now we are going to once again be forced to pay more for lesser talent because agents know Kentucky is in a bind. It's ridiculous.

Hopefully we only have to endure this for one more year.

That’s exactly how you’re gonna have to play this agent crap. You’re gonna have to make the guys think that they’ve got a pretty good deal and take it now. Giving these guys literally weeks to bargain is not going to work.

Pope is in a hard spot with Freeman. According to Matt they held off on Rancik waiting to get Freeman. Matt said once Rancik signed with Florida St. Kentucky tried all day to get Freeman to commit but wasn't successful. Then due to Freemans agent shopping him around St. Johns came in and beat UK's offer. Mat says the St. Johns folks will be hard to beat money wise as to keep in mind they do not have to fund football, so they have deep pockets solely for basketball. At this point I would call Freeman and match St. Johns offer with the understanding that if he doesn't accept on the spot then we move on. I wouldn't let a past injury prone player hold us hostage for really more money than he is worth. Pope is in a hard spot here as if he meets St. Johns offer and the kid signs here and misses games he will be crucified.
Imagine a rule that artificially gives lesser programs an advantage over Kentucky.

Same reason a bunch of fans want Pope to resign and leave the rest of his contract on the table for the “love of UK” despite every single poster saying it wouldn’t walk away from millions of dollars themselves to appease mad internet fans.

Kids chasing bags sucks for fandom, but if I was one of those kids, I’d do the same.

Were you in on any of these conversations between UK and Freeman? Appreciate your morality, but you have no clue how these discussions went.

Likely the same way all the portal conversations went with his top targets last year. Show interest, get a fat offer, use offer to leverage more money from a school where you actually want to play. There is a clear blueprint now that these agents are using.

Part of Pope's problem. He's not a killer on the recruiting trail. Sign Rancik (the lesser player, first) and then get Freeman. In no world is Rancik the starter on a good-great team. Freeman knows Rancik isn't taking his minutes. There's certainly a world where they could both get on the floor together too, especially if Moreno is your only true 5 (stop it with the Potter as backup stuff).

Id say we are not going to get him now with St Johns involved. And im sure Pope did whatever he could and may even up the offer but not many are going to compete with Rick. Time to move on to the next option.
Plenty can "compete with Rick". Mark Pope, however, not so much.

This stuff sucks. It’s bs. Should’ve taken Rancik but then people would’ve said we took the safe play etc. I say let him go. Just hope and pray someone enters the portal today
No reason he couldn't get them both. You sign the lesser player first. Ain't rocket science.

Same. Considering the political leanings of Kentucky, I think it’s safe to assume most here are “free” market loving capitalists. Then some blame kids for trying to capitalize on their talents and situations. At least it makes for decent irony.

I think he needs to tell Freeman to go **** himself. Yank the offer, if you had any thoughts of going to $4M, offer it to Moncilovic. Sign McBride and a couple of roll players. If you can sign Stokes and Moncilovic, the rest doesn't matter because you are the favorite for the national title
Those are two seriously big "ifs".
