Two weeks ago we were looking at Jace Rhodes at 133 and Joseph Kennedy at 165.

We're still stuck with "Tom's Secret Weapon" Victor Voinovich at 157, and 25-30-ish Ludington at 97, but we've gone from 4 ice cream breaks to 1 or 2. And I haven't given up on Ludington. (Sorry, VV.)

Still looking like a brutal season, but slightly less brutal. I'm excited about the new blood.
Nitpicking a little, but wouldn’t the kid who took a grey shirt be ahead of Kennedy?

Umm. When u refer to it as “some court case”. And “apparent bar fight” makes it sound like it was something that wasn’t known. If they knew about it all last summer before he was even in school I don’t know why the settlement would b why they sent him packing. Maybe it was🤷🏻‍♂️. Or maybe it was the season long effort. Have a nice day.
Well obviously Brands knew. The point was we're discussing Jordan Williams and I thought since his court case was recently settled, it was relevant to the conversation.

Some may or may not have known that occurred. Regardless, it was likely a factor eventually in totally evaluating him. I think it was the effort, or lack thereof that ultimately got him sidelined. We all know he's better than VV, but effort matters.

You have a good day as well.

It was plastered all over this board that he got arrested last summer and everybody was speculating if he would b in or not. They still fought to get him on the team with the incident and his history. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the settlement had little to no effect on the decision when they shut him down knowing he’s a better option. Several on here have hinted he wasn’t living the life. I’m guessing an ultimatum was given and he didn’t get it done.

Deakin was verified to have the same bone structure as birds if I recall. It was crazy he could make 57.
I guess we'll see, I just don't see Estrada being able to compete at 57 against the top guys, and we've seen enough of the VV experience.
Seems natural to have the guy that's almost 6' to bump a weight and be healthier.
Even though Block is lanky, according to some guys on the team, he’s the strongest pfp guy on the team in the off season when not cutting. I think he could be strong enough to handle 157.

Doubt he was trying to fill out the disastrous year he went 141. Agree, he will never look thick and muscular unless he hits the juice hard, but 157 on his frame is still very lean.
If the options are block/estrada and 49/57 in some fashion block gets to choose what he feels is best regardless. With results to this point can’t see Estrada scoring significant points at either weight.

You don’t think TnT have ever been in a bar fight? (I know they don’t drink, btw…)
No idea, but I wouldn't have cared then and I don't care now. That would have been Gable's problem, now Jordan Williams & Company are their problem. They handled it like most Coaches would I believe, pristine background or not. And I'm certain they were privy to the "details" from the onset. (maybe JW got some extra Carver step work in because of it......no idea, but if he did it must have tired him out for the season).

The other side of this is Block feels 149 is his best weight. Not everybody is a hyper responder to putting on weight and he doesn’t want to spend his off season focusing on overeating and lifting vs……wrestling and getting better.
Has he said this? Just curious where this is coming from.

Williams definitely showed flashes of talent but I get the no gas tank and giving up overrides. I don't know if with money from schools/donors, contracts can be made that are incentive based on not, but would be great with a Williams type. Im not even sure if he would return to Hawks and its a long shot for him to commit to anything. But, got to think this board will blow up come December with the offense of Estrada/Voinovich.
Williams showed more fight in IC bars than he did on the wrestling mat. He is less of an option than AJ.

I have no inside info but a few on here that generally know what they’re talking about have alluded to 149 being his best weight. I’m just coming at this frim the perspective that if he’s not a hyper responder and gaining weight is hard he’ll have to spend more time and effort doing that vs wrestling hard.

probably a long shot but does anyone have either Iowa's rankings Preseason Rankings or Post Big Ten Rankings vs. NCAA finish over the last few years?

i thought this year they did a better job (than in the recent past) of hitting their pre-tournament expectations.

I have final coaches' rankings for 2023 - 2026. But the problem with that is illustrated this year where Iowa had fewer ranked than qualified. For this I used seeds as that is effectively their rankings going into the tournament.

Iowa had by far their best performance relative to their seeds in the 33 seed era.

For finish vs seed I used the mid-point of the range when the range was different than the seed range and zero when it was not.

For example, all wrestlers who were seeded 9 through 12 and lost in the blood round had 0 deviation, but if one finished in the round of 16 (13th through 16th) they are credited with finishing at 14.5 and their finish vs seed equals seed minus 14.5. I point this out because it means the sum of all deviations across a tournament is often slightly different than zero.

We had a great NCAA tourney relative to our seeds. Part of the reason our seeds were low was because Ferrari & Arnold didn't wrestle enough matches, and partly because guys like Block and Keuter looked mediocre most of the season. I'll take a crappy NCAA performance like 2021.

You can only get what's available. This is where PSU scoring 170 points is warping perspectives. It demands that every acquisition be a top 3 finisher or it's a bad move. Bottom line, Iowa had a huge hole at 165 and they filled it with the best available guy....you have to deal in reality, not what you ideally want it to be.
Well said

I am going to roll with you on this because you keep on getting likes from "Blocksj." Personally, I think RB just needs to build on the NCAA result and get to where he can be more consistent. There were times he looked like a contender and others where he looked like an 0-2 guy at nationals. He is a little bit like Kennedy who found himself at NCAAs in 2025.

Totally agree, at least Estrada seems to have heart and doesn’t quit in matches. Him at 149, Block at 157 is probably best for their body types.
Estrada is hand fight head to head for 6 minutes type. Boring but some can win that way like Lugo or Nelson Brands. Estrada going to need a go to move in the last minute like they had. Maybe not JW but I wish Hawks would get someone to at least compete for 57.
