Why is that dumb? A bike could still damage a car if it runs into one or does something wrong that causes a car to run into the bike or run off the road and hit a light pole. That is why insurance is mandatory for those driving on the roads. Also roads still have to be maintained and time & weather do as much as anything to break them down. Why shouldn't all vehicles who use the roads pay for that? Bikes don't pay gas taxes so you get a break on that. The registration fees and insurance for bikes should be lower commensurate with the lower profile but it makes sense to me that it they are going to play they should should pay when it comes to using public roads..The absolute dumbest argument ever made. - tags fees largely go to road maintenance, improvements, patrol, etc. My bicycles cause almost 0 wear. It would collect what...like $.50 from people?
- I already pay tags fees for my vehicles. If I then ride my bike instead of driving those vehicles, I am transferring miles from something that causes road wear to something that basically doesnt. So if anything...I am effectively funding MORE for the cost of those tags than I would be if I drove those miles instead of riding them.
- As for insurance, if I were to be at fault for a collision while I was riding a bike on the road, my homeowners policy is used(renter's insurance typically covers this too). Additionally, many people's auto insurance will cover that issue, if there is a 2-wheel coverage. Lastly, the cost of damage in many scenarios where it is the cyclists fault will be relatively low, since a cyclists is relatively light and slower moving, so costs could be paid out of pocket.
If the collision is the driver's fault, then it doesnt really matter what insurance the cyclists has.

As for me paying my fair share, if you feel like my explanation doesn't rise to the level of 'fair share', then tell me how much it should cost. Do actual math and calculate the tag cost per mile driven at 12,000 mi for a sedan or suv, then further calculate it based on weight.
Apply that to a bicycle's weight and estimated mileage. Say 25# for the bike since that would be a good middle ground weight and 1000mi since exponentially more people ride fewer than that compared to more than that.
Do the math and post how much a bicycles registration cost should be.
Oh, and this doesn't even factor in the fact that vehicle value is part of what a registration is based on. Just leave that off since it would only further hurt your argument.
