When I was teaching electronics tech. for a few years, I always believed in students using slide rules until they were proficient in those before using a calculator. You really don't know if an answer is right or wrong when using a calculator unless you've done the "grunt'" work to truly understand and expect an answer that is reasonable!
When I was in school(dark ages) one had to turn in their scratch sheets(pencil and paper) to prove they did the "grunt" work. Some things never change.

Had a prof at Dear Old State (Ogontz variety) who didn't require that. This was when the newer TI calculators were coming in that did more than just basic math. Part of the class was stats--and he only gave us a week of material as he got behind (the rest was matrix algebra). Those who passed that part of the final had those TI calculators. Those who didn't--didn't. One of my few Cs
