Cale actually played well tonight, as did Berke. The issue was Sam and Rienk were cold all night. That was the difference. Rienk looked out of gas.
Sam had a fine season but he was a turnover machine tonight. That’s another reason why I did not understand keeping Lawrence on the bench for so long.

Mast has been a good player for us but he got out played tonight. We HAD to have Mast and Jacobsen hit their shots to win.
I’m not going to go on a ridiculous rant and say Mast sucks or anything. He’s been an integral part of the program. But he has limitations. And he’s not consistent. He’ll have good games/moments and bad ones. And his shot goes MIA many times. Fred needs more of a 6’10 beast at that slot.

Cale missed wide open shots he usually makes. Not blaming him. Sometimes you just don’t have it. This is the best roster we’ve had in years BUT some of our pieces were outplayed by Iowa’s bench. 37 points off their bench. Unbelievable. Several of them are true freshmen.

Not sure if he got tired, but he was inconsistent. It will be interesting to see the point/big next year.

This. It was a great year. And Fred blinked in the bright lights tonight. Dumb D. Dumb 1-3-1 zone at the end of the half. Wouldn’t sit Sam when he was having a bad game. JL barely played the last 10 mins. And to top it off—4 defenders on the court when the game is still up for grabs. How does that HAPPEN—in the freaking sweet 16. I’d expect that from Rhule. Just pathetic that one coach didn’t catch it. I feel bad for the players—they deserved better coaching tonight.
I didn’t think Sam had a bad game. That end of half D was pathetic. We HAD to shoot better from 3. End of story.

Fred has to find a couple of transfer guards that can score in other ways besides shooting threes. And a couple of athletic bigs inside.

I do believe there is a young one on the roster, he will be ready to step up next year. The lack of good interior play (on both ends) sunk us the last 6 weeks of the season.

Talent wise, we have the two wings. We needed a point guard tonight. Same as the first Iowa loss. We don't have anyone that can get down hill.

Who would you put in? JL obviously is not healthy. What would you do?
Why do you think JL isn’t healthy? I’m honestly asking? Everybody is banged up this time of year, but he hasn’t looked injured in over a month.

Sam drove to the rim a lot this year. Jacobsen and Lawrence just didn’t have that ability. There are all-around guards and then there are the ones that are basically spot up 3 point shooters. Sam was the one most all around

We definitely need more of an inside presence. Someone who can take it to the basket with some aggression. We didn’t have that and you can’t rely on nothing but shooters. We saw how that works out tonight when no one else but one guy can hit a shot.

Live by the 3….. die by the 3 teams make for some really exciting seasons but typically don’t make it a long ways into the tournament. Almost always comes down to dominate interior play, that’s who wins. Not even dominate just have a decent presence inside, grab rebounds, make it hard to score on you.

That was a pretty fun ending. It reminded me of an old saying from the farmlands of America.........
"The cream always rises to the top."

Enjoy the spring game fellas.

Both teams played well, some great shooting! Iowa stayed patient against our chase D and it did two things in the long run - wore our guys out, they just looked tired and Iowa as able to be patient and move the ball not just settling for the first open shot. Did Mast make any outside shots? They lured us to drive the lane and we don’t have the horses for that then we gave them the lane and took advantage.

Now we see what Fred can do going forward, will Sandfort come back and can this program compete in the B1G consistently or was this a flash in the pan?

I'll also say this....Nebraska gave it away, but the fact that they only call a single foul on Iowa in 20 minutes is criminal and Fred should absolutely light them up in the post game....
I said earlier they don’t call games as tight in the tournament. Nebraska only had 3 fouls in the 2nd half prior to Berke having to foul on the breakaway dunk. We also spent the 2nd half settling (and missing) 3’s. We didn’t put them in position to have to foul us.

We don't have finishers except for Frager. Surprisingly Sam is decent around the rim, but we aren't making a living with him in the middle.
