How nasty would things get if, God forbid, we would lose to LSU tomorrow ?

Regardless of Pope coming back next year or not. I know things got bad with BCG but I cant remember the fan base being this vocal about how terrible of a coach he was compared to Pope. I can’t think of one thing I can hang my hat on that Pope has done well other than about 4-5 come from behind wins. We have played well one game this year, the Arkansas game is the only games that we have been impressive and executed from start to finish.

It’ll just be the same talking points from both sides. Nothing is changing that outside of a miracle NCAAT run or a big recruiting haul over the summer. I fully expect we’re all having the same convos next season.

I hate to even think about it.
It doesn't make much difference at this point. I think most fans, maybe players, too, are ready for this season to end. We aren't going to win the SEC and won't last long in the NCAA. Pope is on schedule to lost his usual 12+ games. Thanks, Mitch.

This is as bad as it will get. And I agree with what you said. This is all we will see tho. “popes getting a third year no matter what”
We will hear the same arbitrary bs after next season. "Pope is getting a 4th year so quit crying." As if there is some magical.number of years needed to turn Nil.era basketball teams around. You'd think we were trying to rebuild a 1970s football team with high-school recruits from scratch. Always excuses and delays. We have a stubborn change adverse administration.

I love Pope but for a guy that seems sincere about wanting to get the program to prominance, he is either stubbornly hanging on or is clueless about his defenciencies in coaching the game, particularly with his subsitution patterns and game management. Why he tolerates Jasper Johnson going into the game and immediately reverting to a heat check is beyond me, I mean I get it like 2 games into the season but that should have been squashed by December 1. Then the continual fatigue thing - coming from a coach who threw up into his jersey running for Pitino. I mean none of it makes sense, Pope was hired to deliver us 1996 type teams, high offense, intense defense, wearing the other team down. He freaking said as much in his opening press conference and we're not anything close to that. Its not injuries, that isn't an excuse because he has a solid 7 man rotation and Aberdeen at this point is probably a better PG than Lowe.

I've been bagging on Mark Fox since day 1 and whether its fair or not, UK looks like his old Georgia teams. I'm fully convinced Pope needs to serve up some sacrificial lambs in the off season and bring in some killer coaches that will challenge him or at a minimum, deliver on his vision of the program. What Pope is doing right now is contrary to what he knows is Kentucky basketball, and the worst part of it is, he isn't holding the players, his staff or himself accountable for it.

Its so bad, ok, just to put this in perspective, he talked about having players that play for the name on the front with some biblical type reference of the uniform clothing them, and these freaking guys continually show they are only interested in the money.

HOW THE F DO YOU LET THAT HAPPEN ?

This team is not fixable because it was assembled under the wrong circumstances. I understand NIL is a huge driver but we should never had a team talking about getting that money as a chant before a game. That is a coach who isn't in charge and isn't getting his message to the team.

I don't have a problem with Pope getting another year. I have a serious problem with the people around him returning and he better not be willing to throw serious money at players on this team who have shown they can't play as a team player or keep their emotions in check.

Reading some posts where the excuse is about NIL or the changes in the college basketball current situation doesn't explain Duke, Michigan State, and similar programs that somehow maintain their elite status. In other words, this is no excuse.

Pope's future totally depends on how donors feel and whether they come up with enough NIL money. If they don't then he cannot recruit and without adding 5-6 players he has no path forward.

If definitely wouldn't be shocking if we lost so I don't think the meltdown would be that terrible, and that speaks to how much we've fallen in the last couple years.

I actually think we will win by double digits. Beyond that? Eh. Missouri looked like they have some physical dudes and we will be extremely fatigued so that one will be tough.

Honestly, after how this season has gone, most wouldn’t be surprised. Me personally I honestly wouldn’t even care if we lost. This team is not going to win the SEC tournament. So why not just get it over with. That’s just means less games of this clown show I have to subject myself to. I’m completely done and ready for the season to be over. I’m not happy about Pope but he’s getting another season to fix the problems. Ready to just get to the off-season and see how he adjust creating this next roster. Hopefully Pope changes my mind on him next year. I’m not rooting for him to fail. I’m just not willing to sit back and act like he hasn’t failed, like some people. And saved me with the injuries BS. There’s about five games this year we lost because of pure coaching maleficent.

Matt will still say he gets a year 3.

The Popettes on here will continue to blame injuries and say Pope is gonna win big here.

The Dope himself will give some word salad about fatigue from being exhausted from having to fly to Nashville and will admit he's gonna drive down to Arkansas to watch Little House with Cal to get some tips for the ncaa tournament. He will then be too tired to drive or fly back to Lexington.

Trent Noah is named interim coach as a KY Man is gonna lead KY and KY shocks America by not getting down double digits and wins its first two games to advance to the sweet 16.

Sadly, The Dope has finally found the energy to make it back to Lexington. UK loses to its sweet 16 opponent by 14, after falling down 27 in the first half.

The Popettes beam with pride and prepare to tell their grand children the tale of how UK outscored its opponent by 13 and won the 2nd half. They petition for a banner to be hung in Rupp but are denied. They instead hang individual sweet 16 banners in their mothers/grandma's basements.

Something like that OP. Bad.
Well done

It would be bad. There would be upset fans. The disappointment would wane. Attention and focus would immediately turn to recruiting.
Opinion would be just about unanimous that Pope simply has to hit a home run and get substantial talent for his pivotal third year.

I don't think there's anything that Pope can do to be fired.

But if the path exists, it involves losing on WEDNESDAY of the SEC Tournament, losing your 1st round game in the NCAA tournament, AND Hiring a new AD external to the current administration.

I don't think one of Mitch's groomed pupils are going to fire a Mitch hire after the 2nd year.

All of that said, I don't think it happens, regardless. But if there is ANY scenario in which it could happen--that's the one.

Coaches don't get fired after 2 years merely for disappointing results, not even at peer programs.

Pope won’t lose tomorrow. We might get down by double digits while looking like jackasses in the process, but he’ll probably barely pull off a victory as the Pope’s Dopes Squad goads on anyone who thinks escaping with a victory against the worst team in the SEC isn’t good enough.

If they lose tomorrow, I don’t know why (besides the money) he would want to come back.

Me: Where do you think you're going? Nobody's leaving. Nobody's walking out on this fun, old-fashioned tournament season. No, no. We're all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm Cats fans' emergency here. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest March since the Brow went to the dance with Doron f'n Lamb.

Casual Fan: TheBlueMist, I think it's best if everybody just goes home, before things get worse.

Me: WORSE? How can they get any worse? Take a look around you Casual Fan! We're at the threshold of Hell!

I'm expecting a loss, they should have beat us the first time and we aren't going to be motivated at all. They know all the fans are embarrassed to be in this game and they'll play like it.

based on our upcoming recruiting class.... there is no question Pope is out of his league.
Based on the fact Barnhart was shoved out the door, opens the fact the University might be aware.
If we lose to LSU tomorrow.... I think he should step aside for the good of the program.
Based on the fact we are going to be building our roster around NIL and transfers is nothing short of MEDIOCRITY

We lose tomorrow I say we don’t deserve a bid and just shut down this god awful season. Then Pope has a huge offseason to get it right and if he doesn’t, the new AD will have the biggest hire of his tenure right off the bat.

I want to believe Mark can do it but he was asked to come be the coach at UK which he was unqualified for in the first place.

The outcome of the game (s) this week has no bearing on my thoughts either way. I now know that we hired the wrong dude. It’s just a matter of how far down this road do we wanna go when we know at some point we gotta find a place to turn around and retrace our steps. I don’t hate the guy and I honestly feel bad for his wife and family. He should have never been hired here. Another asinine move by the Quaker to hire someone he could groom and control. It’s a colossal failure.

Statistics are fun - Mark Pope is in his 11th season of coaching basketball.

By his 11th season Dean Smith had been to 4 Final Fours and had won 5 conference championships.

By his 11th season John Wooden had won 3 conference championships and was regularly winning at or above an 80% clip. (The rest is history)

By his 11th season Mike Krzyzewski had been to his first Final Four and had won the regular season and conference tournament championship.

By his 11th season Danny Hurley had won a conference and regular season championship, made a Final Four and won the National Championship.

By his 11th season Mark Pope has done NONE of those things. His winning percent sits at an awful .635 over that time.

Why in the living world are you comparing Mark Pope to these guys?
