I have never grown as tired of a coach so quickly as I have of pope. Maybe because I expected more of him. I really thought he would do well here. I was wrong. I would have fired his *** in December. I only know what he says from this forum because I can’t stand to hear him speak. He has no business coaching here.
I have defended him to this point but it’s getting really hard. The only explanation if he is a good coach is he is playing the long game. He needs to find out who to bring back and who to cut loose. He continues to say the key to winning is retaining his good players. If he brings back Garrison. He isn’t serious. This season is a wash. He’s gotta know that. Maybe he is auditioning for next year??

Considering he played for Pitino he’s surprised me with how different he is than him. To make it at this level, it’s hard to make it as a nice guy. You gotta be tough and have thick skin to coach at a blue blood. I really hope Pope can turn this around but I just don’t think he can do it. I’ll be happy to be wrong because I like having a coach that’s a good person and an alumni. It bothers me that he’s struggled. I want him to work out so bad I hate even criticizing the guy. But I put the program above any coach. Something’s gotta change.
I think many of us, myself included, got sucked into the nostalgia hype and thought we were getting a modern day Pitino. Which probably wasn’t fair to Pope because there is nothing in his career that pointed to him coaching like Pitino.

Blaming a 44-11 run at the end of the first half and start of the second half on fatigue when you played 9 deep and used none of your 4 timeouts is...one of the craziest things I've ever heard a coach say. Pope is grasping for straws and a change before next season MUST be considered.

He is the worst at sound bites. His hiring is and continues to be absolutely bizarre

This offseason is a big one. Hopefully, he has people around him that can share some of his problem areas with him. He's no dummy -- you'd hope he's surrounding himself with people even more intelligent than himself.
He’s definitely a smart guy. I just know how hard this job can be for any coach. Maybe he kills it with the portal and next year we look great? It’s not impossible that’s for sure and I hope it works out that way. If I’m wrong I’ll make fun of myself and admit to anyone that calls me out on it that I messed up. I just see so many red flags right now that I really worry about the situation we’re in.

I definitely did. I loved that 96 team and I wanted to see Pope come in here and bring us back to being elite again. Seeing Pitino back in rupp was awesome and I have really fond memories of when he was our coach. I wish the young guys could have seen our teams of the 90s and how much fun they were to watch

Nope - taking Aberdeen and Oweh out together during that TAMU run - not calling time out in the middle of a 27-3 run. That is incompetent coaching. I like Pope as a person but he is way over his head…

That whole press conference was a stroke of marketing genious! It cast a powerful spell, no doubt about it.

Remember when Kenny Payne was the coach of Louisville?
Remember how after every loss, Kenny would give some answer that everyone shook their head at.

Mark Pope is now Kenny Payne when it comes to bad quotes during a press conference. Just unbelievable.

I wouldnt say he is blaming it but I would say he is mentioning it because when you have 3 of your top 6-7 players out for the yr its just a fact.
its nothing short of amazing that Pope has this team on the verge of a 20 win reg season with (after the FL game)what will be a top 3 SOS and doing it with 3 of his top 6-7 players out for the yr. with injuries and enduring all the bad whistles UK gets every yr.

……what a joke. He’s going to die on this sword apparently, even though it’s a pathetic, and retarded excuse.
Either he has the absolute worst conditioning program in history, or he’s grasping at straws.

There is no way 18-24 year old athletes can possibly get tired playing CBB. Each team has 4 timeouts. So, that’s a combined 8 timeouts. There’s 8 tv timeouts. There’s a 15 minute halftime. There’s also countless stoppages in play for turnovers, fouls, foul shots, challenges, reviews, and injuries.

Not to mention, they pissed away that 12 point lead in the FIRST HALF. So they were fatigued in the first half.
Yep. Time your breaks around timeouts better

Two of the three of Aberdeen, Chandler and Oweh have to be in the game at all times if possible. The "fatigue" excuse in that situation is exactly that, an excuse not a reason. This team (players & coaches) is it's own worst enemy.

When I was 18-25 years ago, I was always ready to play the next day. The tired, worn down, fatigue stuff I don’t buy. I would even argue that, especially in an environment like the SEC tournament, the team stays sharper playing each day. We’ve seen Syracuse and UCONN both play like 5 games in 5 days and win their Big East tournament.

Look how engaged the Lady Cats were today. Georgia hadn’t played. Our girls looked sharper and took the convincing WIN after playing yesterday.

Our problem isn’t fatigue, or substitution patterns (sometimes), the biggest problem I see with our team is our guys are not out there getting after it like they should be most of the time. When they are, we are very formidable, when we back the foot off the pedal that’s when we see mediocre play creep in.

I couldn't care less if someone is a good person. We also don't know what kinda person these famous people are in private with family and friends.

Cal seemed like a good husband and dad and donated tons to charity and did stuff for KY community. But idk how he is n private. Same with Pope.

Coaching is all that matters.

I can understand people wanting him gone after what has been a disappointing season, but I don't get the genuine dislike for the man. He is a good, if goofy person who bleeds Blue to the bone. Nothing makes .e suspect he has phoned it in like Cal at the end
We don’t dislike him as a person but we do as a coach. Just like we did with Cal at the end. Can’t stand to hear his rambling about stuff that makes no sense. Continued excuses and lack of preparation. We know he won’t address the problems and he just makes the worst excuses for everything he does. I understand why people already can’t stand to hear him talk.

It’s another tone deaf moment from this staff. Fans are already saying Pope is too soft and weak and he comes out and says we’re fatigued and that’s why we lost the lead?? We had played 9 minutes of ball when TxAM went on their run.
Sometimes smart people have no common sense and Pope seems to fit in that category.
Chat GPT told him to say that. He analyzed the game and that’s what came up.

I agree and criticizing is totally warranted amd legitimate but hating on the guy is nor right either. I am frustrated like everyone else but I also feel sad that one of our former players and captains is failing miserably as our coach.

His legacy is being ruined which s*cks because he's one of us. No doubt he loves our school and unfortunately things will never be the same now when his name is brought up.

He is not competent enough for this job. Hopefully someone at the school will have enough guts to do a mercy kill and let him go after the season ends.

I was really hoping when Pope came in that he would condition our guys like he was conditioned by Pitino.
You can 100 percent tell that did not happen. Our guys looks so slow and tired.
I was hoping for that toughness as well. I thought with having such a deep roster that he was going to go up tempo on offense and press on defense . To me that made sense with wanting so many guys on the roster and for the most part them being similar talent wise. We are in hell right now lol.

A good leader/ceo will have the smartest people around them to be successful. My concern is he appears to be tone deaf and is not flexible at all. Its worrisome that he continues to bang the fatigue drum.

OO averages about 31.5 minutes a game and that doesn't rank in the top 250 players in college hoops for minutes played per game.

Its an indictment of our conditioning program and Pope himself if our guys are fatigued with a 9 man rotation right now.

Add in not having a backup PG on the roster after Lewis de-committed plus giving a fat check to JQ fully knowing playing in 9 months was the best case scenario is just inexcusable.

Saturday to Tuesday is too tough? He said that. Lol.
That’s an insane excuse this time of year. In Nov? Yeah that’s plausible because you’re still getting guys used to roles, game shape, etc. but March?? No. That’s a loser excuse.

This is spot on. By all accounts, Mark is a good human. You can say that you want him replaced, without calling him names and getting personal.

Honestly, with some of his comments lately, I’m not so sure he’s not positioning himself for a buyout.
He is a good person. Hes just starting to wear thin here . You can only give so many positivity farts without starting to grate on the nerves.

I’m wondering if he’s thinking about resigning too. Could be why we have no recruits.

This ^ is about as short and factual as any post I’ve seen. He seems to be a genuinely good person but a genuinely terrible basketball coach. At first I thought it was a terrible hire but I got sucked in by all of the hype and energy. That was a huge mistake. My first impression was 100# correct.
I don’t even think he’s a bad coach overall. Hes just does dumb crap. He’s just not major D1 or UK caliber.

He coulld go to a mid major and do well somewhere.

Coaches have YUGE egos. Almost all of them. The trick is finding your Jon Robic to execute your good ideas and tell you when you’re being a freaking moron on your bad ones.

Me too so don't feel bad. Credit to the guys who called this 2 years ago.
I wasn’t sold sold on him. I thought our first couple of seasons might like Yr 1 was. Some really good wins. Couple of clunkers and a decent S16 finish while he built up the program.

Sadly this year has torched that. If we had decent recruits coming I’d be willing to give him next year to show he can truly do it. But we don’t. And that’s sooooo disappointing.

Teams usually reflect the competitiveness of their coach. If Pope tells them they’re tired, they’ll believe and play like it.

While true I never got that impression with this team.

We seem to struggle in 1st halves of games and come alive in the 2nd half. Which kinda runs counter to the whole fatigue comment lol.

Except in the second half they realize they’re not all that fatigued after all, and begin to play like it.

It is impossible. He’s not changing everything he does at 53 years old.

you give him an nba team and he will have standing straight up on defense, not blocking out, running zoom and half *** playing in no time.

And win 65%

He just has no feel for the game or moments. And he’s not gaining feel now.
