……what a joke. He’s going to die on this sword apparently, even though it’s a pathetic, and retarded excuse.
Either he has the absolute worst conditioning program in history, or he’s grasping at straws.

There is no way 18-24 year old athletes can possibly get tired playing CBB. Each team has 4 timeouts. So, that’s a combined 8 timeouts. There’s 8 tv timeouts. There’s a 15 minute halftime. There’s also countless stoppages in play for turnovers, fouls, foul shots, challenges, reviews, and injuries.

Not to mention, they pissed away that 12 point lead in the FIRST HALF. So they were fatigued in the first half.

I have never grown as tired of a coach so quickly as I have of pope. Maybe because I expected more of him. I really thought he would do well here. I was wrong. I would have fired his *** in December. I only know what he says from this forum because I can’t stand to hear him speak. He has no business coaching here.

I can understand people wanting him gone after what has been a disappointing season, but I don't get the genuine dislike for the man. He is a good, if goofy person who bleeds Blue to the bone. Nothing makes .e suspect he has phoned it in like Cal at the end

At this point, Pope as a coach would fit at a football school or a school that doesn’t have very high expectations. I just don’t see it working out for him here. I hope I’m wrong and I know people are going to get mad at me for saying that. If I’m wrong I’ll definitely be happy about it because I like him as a person.

Same. He tries to cover obvious incompetence by using unnecessarily complex vocabulary that ends up saying nothing.

If Saturday to Tuesday is too hard, guess fans shouldn't have much hope in the sec tournament. Not that we did anyway.

Pope’s soft/weak and it’s poured onto the players. I’ve said it several times that he’s a great person in general but that his coaching is a direct image of himself. You can’t be weak yourself and expect the players to feed of it.
I agree. But it’s not just that. He’s not coaching either.

No one knows how to play defense. No one is boxing out.

Players don’t get better individually.

He doesn’t do anything well as a coach.

Someone said it looks like he’s trying to get fired. That just might be it?

It’s almost impossible to be as bad as he is.

We all like the man. The man and the coach are two different people. We're tired of coach pope.

It’s another tone deaf moment from this staff. Fans are already saying Pope is too soft and weak and he comes out and says we’re fatigued and that’s why we lost the lead?? We had played 9 minutes of ball when TxAM went on their run.
Sometimes smart people have no common sense and Pope seems to fit in that category.

Do you remember how you were scolding me for starting threads about Pope? And now you're starting them at about a 2:1 ratio over me. Hilarious! Welcome to the dark side!

This is spot on. By all accounts, Mark is a good human. You can say that you want him replaced, without calling him names and getting personal.

Honestly, with some of his comments lately, I’m not so sure he’s not positioning himself for a buyout.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but if I would have known Pope was going to be this level of cringe, both on the court, and off the court media gaslighting, I’d drove to Lexington and personally begged Calipari not to leave!

Calipari would insult your intelligence to your face, Pope likes the side handed passive aggressive approach.

This ^ is about as short and factual as any post I’ve seen. He seems to be a genuinely good person but a genuinely terrible basketball coach. At first I thought it was a terrible hire but I got sucked in by all of the hype and energy. That was a huge mistake. My first impression was 100# correct.

I think the dislike stems from the goofiness and the incompetence. I don't really dislike him, but I can't stand him as a coach. Personally, I think some of his stuff is just flat out fake as well. All the "persistent positive" stuff just comes across as disingenuous to a lot of folks. To be completely fair, none of us know him as a person, we just know the coach. And, to be completely honest, I really dislike Mark Pope the basketball coach.

He was not qualified to coach here. He only received consideration because he played here, which is an insufficient hiring criterion.
Pitino's public support was certainly a factor, too ... NO QUESTION !!
He will have to work miracles to earn and/or regain the confidence of the fans. The pressure on him in his third year will be immense.
It appears recruiting for next year will be the difference-maker and heavily influence his future ... if not determine it.

I don’t know the man to dislike him. I despise what he is doing to UK basketball. He tries to cover his coaching flaws with the fanbase with emotional pleas.

Idk he may be correct in some fashion about fatigue, but it's his job to make sure the conditioning is good enough not to be so fatigue. Whatever happened to running until you puke? Pope wasn't too good for it when he was a player.
Agree, there's something to the fatigue thing. Other things being equal, the team that's fresher has an edge. And if you can do something to gain an advantage in that area, while not sabotaging your team in the process, by all means do it!

I was really hoping when Pope came in that he would condition our guys like he was conditioned by Pitino.
You can 100 percent tell that did not happen. Our guys looks so slow and tired.

Considering he played for Pitino he’s surprised me with how different he is than him. To make it at this level, it’s hard to make it as a nice guy. You gotta be tough and have thick skin to coach at a blue blood. I really hope Pope can turn this around but I just don’t think he can do it. I’ll be happy to be wrong because I like having a coach that’s a good person and an alumni. It bothers me that he’s struggled. I want him to work out so bad I hate even criticizing the guy. But I put the program above any coach. Something’s gotta change.

This offseason is a big one. Hopefully, he has people around him that can share some of his problem areas with him. He's no dummy -- you'd hope he's surrounding himself with people even more intelligent than himself.
