Tom Brands did throw the bird at the OSU fans this weekend.
Not true. Would like to know whose parents told you this? I don't like what's going on with the program either, but I'm not going to sit back and let people try and tarnish a good man's reputation.Terry's sideline optics are just awful. I'll guarantee you his mad man act doesn't play well with parents of prospective recruits.
TBF there have been a lot of take down machines in the 100+ years of Iowa HS wrestling. Not a lot of those guys ever wrestled at a high level in the B1G.I think there’s some truth to this and recruiting absolutely matters. But I also think development matters immensely. Nelson Brands was a takedown machine in high school. At Iowa, not so much. Was his style to blame or was there a major development component?
Ben Keuter? Ethen Lofthouse? Alex Marinelli? Nick Moore? Sammy Brooks? Grant Gambrall? Tony Cassioppi? Patrick Kennedy? Mike Evans? Ryan Morningstar? Alex Tsirtsis? Josh Dziewa? Charlie Falck? Mike Evans? Dan Leclere?
I think tons of those dudes had great offense in high school and abilities to extend it into college and reach great heights in the right coaching/training environment. Most of them did reach AA status, but how many reached the potential they had coming in? How many continued to be as offensive as they were in high school? I mostly see a bunch of dudes who primarily became “pressure” merchants rather than dynamic offensive scorers in college, but that’s not typically what they were in high school.
Even if they weren’t prolific or dynamic scorers in high school, that’s not a reason they shouldn’t reach their potential. Starocci wasn’t a dynamic scorer in college, but he certainly reached his potential and scored big team points. Prolific scorers or not, figure out how to get the best out of (and for) your guys. And when you consistently don’t, of course the recruiting suffers. It stems from the lack of development in the system.
I listed 14 others, not all from Iowa. Many/most of them were certainly elite recruits. And I could have listed more. My point wasn’t to do with Nelson so much as it was to do with countering the notion that (lack of) development under TNT isn’t a major part of the problem. To me, it’s undeniably obvious that it is.TBF there have been a lot of take down machines in the 100+ years of Iowa HS wrestling. Not a lot of those guys ever wrestled at a high level in the B1G.
I never considered Nelson an elite recruit, TBH. I hoped he would develop into AA and he did.
Only the greats throw an occasional chair. Bobby Knight threw one farther than Cael.
I dont think its out to tarnish a good reputation by saying something that probably has some truth to it. Its like so many other facets of the staff that haven't really rolled with the times. Its the timeframe they wrestled in. Probably the same with some old timers on this board. Most of us probably had a borderline crazy coach that would lose their s**t on the sidelines. Seemed like it was almost a prerequisite of being a good coach to have a crazy side to them. Contrast that with the examples of successful coaches you see now. All are passionate, but most have a much more chilled approach. That reflects on their teams as well. They tend to be a little more freed up with their style. Im not saying it scares recruits away, but they see the difference in styles. Iowa as a whole generally looks tight, and as painful as it is to say, they wrestle timid. I think you would have to be a little crazy to not at least acknowledge the matside antics contribute to that. Not true. Would like to know whose parents told you this? I think this plays a major role in not getting recruits. Gotta prove you can make guys national champs. Bull/kem/eierman/woods not winning a title really hurt.Development is a major problem under the current regime. I’d argue the biggest problem.
There is an exception. Before Spencer Lee made is commitment he said, “I just didn’t want Terry Brands coaching against me in the other corner.”Terry's sideline optics are just awful. I'll guarantee you his mad man act doesn't play well with parents of prospective recruits.
They could just retire, or possibly be offered "administrative" work.If the U buys out their contracts, wonder where they go. Stay in BT maybe at Illinois or Rutgers? Maybe they go big 12 team.
I agree, but it's alot easier, or at least more productive, to be fearless when you have high talent. Marginal talent + fearless = counting or seeing stars in 30 seconds.Watching ADS and Spencer wrestle makes me miss how fearless most of that group was. Those two, Eierman, Bull, Kemerer, Cass. Even Murin and Young but in a slightly different way.
It just feels like that fearlessness is gone. Caliendo is the only one I would say has it.
Maybe but I doubt it. Kicking back or pushing paper doesn't seem in their DNA.They could just retire, or possibly be offered "administrative" work.
I know he is taking more losses this year, but Drake wrestles fearless.Watching ADS and Spencer wrestle makes me miss how fearless most of that group was. Those two, Eierman, Bull, Kemerer, Cass. Even Murin and Young but in a slightly different way.

That’s a good point, he has gotten a lot better about that since the Fugitt loss.I know he is taking more losses this year, but Drake wrestles fearless.
Whoa.Once they flip Mikey & Blaze- Iowa won't have anyone in the top 2 seeds.
Iowa with no #1 seeds and PSU with six, and two #2 seeds.
It's time for a regime change.
This isn't fair or accurate. You don't think 125 finishes higher than 8th, 149 higher than 8th, 184 higher than 8th, 197 higher than 13th, or 285 higher than 10th?!? That is half the lineup. There was a time a lot of us would have thought Iowa will wrestle way above that seed. Its gonna be ugly the next few eeks. There are no rabbits to pull out of hats.

I don’t see TNT coaching collegiately anywhere except Iowa. While this season has been painful, no one bleeds black and gold more than TNT. It is possible Tom might do something administrative, while Terry is a freestyle coach for HWC and/or USA Wrestling. If the U buys out their contracts, wonder where they go. Harvey is a long shot to AA next year, but Deluca should have a decent shot if his injury isn’t too bad. Can’t believe nobody has heard a peep all season what this injury is that kept him out all year. Has he had surgery? My friend, I just don't see a path to 3-6 next year barring some serious portal grabs. Currently our over/under AA count for this year is what, 4.5 or 5? 3 of those are leaving this year and I don't see possible AAs replacing them. We got our men at 25 and 97 joining the party, but it's hard to picture them as AAs their first year. If something impressive doesn't happen I can easily see us with 2 or 3 AAs next year and finishing closer to 10th than 6th. Am I missing some recruits they're hiding in that windowless facility?
PSU and now OSU kept getting better and better as the number of top 10, then top 5 pfp recruits kept coming in each year. There is a reason next year will be Taylor’s best yet, and it’s not development, it’s recruiting.Development is a major problem under the current regime. I’d argue the biggest problem.
Recruiting follows development. If the top 5 type guys thought they would get better in Iowa's room than Ok St's, they would be at Iowa. What they see is Iowa wrestlers injured and/or underachieving every year while PSU dominates nationals. There is certainly a bet by some that DT will be able to recreate the PSU formula at Ok St, which is not settled, but the one year returns look pretty good taking two career mid-AAs in Hamiti and Hendrickson and turning them into champions in one year in the room.PSU and now OSU kept getting better and better as the number of top 10, then top 5 pfp recruits kept coming in each year. This will be true in fact only. Everyone understands that Angelo is at least a top 2 184 and a victim of the Big 10's seeding nonsense this year.Once they flip Mikey & Blaze- Iowa won't have anyone in the top 2 seeds.
This is a stupid thing to say and even in 1.8 seasons, the data shows you're wrong.PSU and now OSU kept getting better and better as the number of top 10, then top 5 pfp recruits kept coming in each year. Funny thing about wrestling rankings ———you have to wrestle matches !!!!This will be true in fact only. Everyone understands that Angelo is at least a top 2 184 and a victim of the Big 10's seeding nonsense this year.
Maybe the recruiting would be better if top recruits actually thought they could get better in the Iowa roomPSU and now OSU kept getting better and better as the number of top 10, then top 5 pfp recruits kept coming in each year. My friend, living in Nashville the only news / updates I receive come from folks on this forum. I hope he’s a gamer; we need some new, aggressive blood and I hope he’s part of it.Harvey is a long shot to AA next year, but Deluca should have a decent shot if his injury isn’t too bad. Can’t believe nobody has heard a peep all season what this injury is that kept him out all year. Has he had surgery?
Think you’re wrong VHS…not a stupid thing to say. Like you said, it’s 1a and 1b but you’re much better off if you start with Jax and Bo and don’t have to worry as much about the 1b. And we definitely don’t want to look back 15 years at Iowa; that’ll just make us even more frustrated than we already are. This is a stupid thing to say and even in 1.8 seasons, the data shows you're wrong.
Recruiting is 1A, but developing is 1B. Feel free to look back at the top recruiting classes from the past 15 years. Iowa has had their fare share of glorious recruits. They don't develop. You have to do both.
