2) cauliflower ear. I don't care how successful the person who has it is, and that there is some badge of honor associated with it.......it is as ugly as it gets! I cannot understand why anybody would want to deform their body in this way. International organizations should require headgear in competition, and coaches and clubs should require it in practice.
I don't disagree, but competition is a tiny fraction of the time spent in practice. Limited or negligible impact if requirement is only in matches, and IDK how to enforce that in practices, youth clubs, camps, etc.

Has to be a cultural change.

No, not at all. Nothing nice about it at all!

Wrestling is the greatest of sports, with just two blemishes, and unfortunately, they are rather large blemishes. 1) Excessive and unhealthy weight cutting (granted, it has improved greatly from when I wrestled in the late 70's early 80's and is now less common and better regulated) and 2) cauliflower ear. I don't care how successful the person who has it is, and that there is some badge of honor associated with it.......it is as ugly as it gets! It's definitely a badge of honor in the MMA community and have seen the meme (someone is instigating a fight, then they notice the other person has cauliflower ear and immediately change their tune) in real life. I went to the ENT and had mine properly drained and sewn back up. Now I wear headgear whenever I roll. Makes it more difficult to get out of triangles, but better than getting my ear cut open again.

I always wore a headgear, for meets and practice. Through HS, college and coaching.

Why are you getting into triangles?

But did you wear a polo shirt to protect against Cauliflower Nipple?

Their reactions are priceless.........hilarious! 😆

Although at least it's not the Izzy Whatizit mascot from the 1996 Atlanta Summer games. Worst Olympic mascot ever - What is it?

A newspaper had a competition amongst cartoonists back in the day to parody this mascot and Berke Breathed came up with a masterpiece. I’ve never been able to find it googling, but essentially it was kind of a fat, hairy sleezy old guy smoking a cigar and seen from the side looking like a dollar sign in profile - its name was “weknowwhatitiz”. Of course he was making fun of the IOC’s never ending quest to make money by any means necessary

In 2009 Big10s the Brands boys were full of themselves. Occasionally taking their BS to the points of physically threatening other coaches with "shut the F up", a couple "shut up b4 i punch you in the mouth" they were confident and they were bullies. One remark was made to Mark Perry who while sitting in a corner and Mark smiled and whipped a bird.
Cael taking ownership of the NCAA and the Big10 has been a whole lot of fun for PSU fans, but it also put TnT in their place a little bit. That has been a fun peripheral aspect of the PSU dominance.

My HS buddy was one win away from being a quarter finalist at... states... (Yeah, I'm from PA) and got a full ride at the naval academy for football. He was a good athlete. Every once in a while in gym class, we would wrestle.

I could take him down almost every time (but he beat the s*** out of me on the mat. LOL!). He always said I should go out for wrestling. The only reason I didn't was due to my... VANITY.

If you wore head gear, you were considered a p**** . So, I didn't want to be shamed into developing freak ears.

I didn't know where to put this. It's not social media, but it's not really worthy of it's own thread, either, but since this is kind of a catch-all, I'll put it here. I have been researching my family history fairly thoroughly since my father got sick a couple years ago (he passed in July, 2024). some may remember I posted on the old board about discovering that I am related to former Lock Haven coach and national wrestling HOF member Kenneth Cox, which was super cool.

Today, I made an even bigger discovery. I am actually 6th cousins, once removed, from none other than Cary Kolat. My family roots in Jefferson date back to 1790, almost to its founding, with the Rex family, so I guess it's not a surprise, but this is definitely a cool discovery.
