with McCabe out for the rest of the season, it's time to ask the question again: WHAT'S UP WITH EMELY RODRIGUEZ????

Is she practicing?
Is doing any basketball activities?

I'm still really shocked that nobody seems to able to find out any answers.

If she does have a back injury, she probably shouldn't be riding a bike on the California beaches.
(I think it's safe to say she doesn't have a back injury)

Classes start for 2nd semester on Jan 20th

You’re unlikely to get a clear answer. The situation has had a negative impact on the season, and that responsibility falls on Jan. We needed more size, better ball handling, and players who could create their own shot. Instead, we ended up with a suspension and a player stuck on the bench. At this point, it will likely cost us more games and a better position in the NCCA tournament. Bad recruiting has consequences.

News flash, recruiting is not easy. Evaluating how a player fits into your program is not easy. Sometimes you are wrong. Happens to all coaches. We were all happy with Chat, Addie, Journey, Layla, and Emely this summer. Some turned out better than expected, some not so much. Just saying it’s not easy and sometimes you are wrong. It’s not a science.

I understand your perspective, but it is hard to ignore that other programs have already found workable formulas. We have plenty of examples of coaches who consistently construct lineups capable of competing at a very high level. Right now, that appears to be a gap for Jan. The lineup decisions have not produced the same consistency or ceiling we have saw in the past. If this is not a strength for her, then it becomes essential to hire assistant coaches who can compensate for that weakness and help build lineups that can compete at the highest level.

I appreciate your response and I enjoy it when we can share our opinions while respecting each others thoughts. I do think it’s too early to judge Jan as a recruiter. This class of freshmen is actually her first year of filling a competitive roster. While I believe both of us see some needs and areas of improvement I feel we are still very competitive as our record proves. It will be interesting to see what direction Jan goes in the portal. She hit one home run this year and it appears she struck out once. McKenna and a great perimeter shooter with some length in the portal would be my wish. Anything else would be a bonus.

It’s her second year and we are ranked 8th in the country. What in the world are you talking about? Did you expect us to go 18-0 in the B1G and get a 1 seed on the tourney?

I have ZERO issue with the job Jan did in the portal for this team. None. I do however think this whole "day to day" nonsense has way past run its course. It seems pretty hard to believe she's injured, so play her, or don't or boot her if whatever she did was that bad, but enough...

Same thing happened with wrestling. The past years the transfers have been lights out this year's been the opposite.

I don't think I saw anything from Emely Rodriguez in the first few games that would change how they've been playing in the last 2.

That I disagree with.

She can be a little out of control, but when things are not going right she could be the one to make them go right.

We already had one win this season that probably did not happen with out her.

If Emely sits on the bench the remainder of the season, which seems likely, it would follow that her and coach worked out a deal to let her transfer out. It happens, but this season she was a key piece for the team.

I’ve thought about this, and I’m trying to think through what the benefits would be for both parties for a player to sit the bench for the rest of the season, rather than just leave at the semester. Just speculating, but here’s what I came up with:

Benefits for the player:
- Likely retains NIL money as a team member
- Helps PR. Doesn’t look like a quitter
- Retains access to team benefits such as training, meals, tutors, etc.

Benefits for the team:
- Avoids short-term, mid-season distraction
- Helps PR. Shows commitment to players
- Emergency backup player, if needed

All in all, while I can see mutual benefits to an arrangement like this, it seems like the player gets the better end of the deal.

The risk of keeping around a player who wants out is that the player’s presence could damage team chemistry. But I suppose the coaching staff will have a far better idea if that is the case than anyone on the outside.

Based on Jan's previous responses to questions on Emely, I would guess her chance of returning to play at Iowa is slim to none (leaning none).

As Max Rebo pointed out, there are a lot of benefits to her staying on both sides. I'd say staying benefits Emely a lot more than it benefits the team. She would have a much harder time getting picked up somewhere if she actually walked away from the team. By sticking w/ the 'back injury' she has some tape to show teams, shows she 'stuck it out', etc......

I had the same thoughts about the Cali pictures - long plane ride, hoping on a bike etc........Seems like her back is getting a lot better if she's able to do all of these 'extras'........

I just wish the Media would have the guts to actually ask Jan again on her status/progression. The reply from Jan will probably be shes day-to-day

There is no need to ask a question like that when you already know what answer you will get. There is really nothing positive to gain from asking it as they have already questioned her on it multiple times and I think it was Kyle who had the follow up "Is she still on the team?" that got the best answer we have heard as of yet,

If she’s leaving I can’t believe something hasn’t leaked. Players have to know what’s up and most women can’t keep secrets. I’m leaning toward her back issues as why she’s not playing. Why bring up a bad back if you’re planning on transferring since many teams won’t take a chance on a player with that issue.

I would think the main reason would be she would look for a medical redshirt. I have no idea on the rules and if she could get one or not
