I just wish JJ would run some action for her. If they won’t run in transition and push the ball and insist on the pound it inside approach, maybe run some action for the perimeter players.Deal really struggled to make shots this trip. I wonder how much that has to do with being close to home.
Stremlow should prob be starting in front of Deal.Just gotta love the effort from Ava in 2nd half.
Stremlow worked hard as well.
UCLA is an 18.5 point favorite
Vegas is expecting a 81-63 type game (O/U is 143.5)

UCONN would kill UCLA.Will it be UConn vs UCLA for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP?
UCONN would kill UCLA.
Need 2 halves of that.Just gotta love the effort from Ava in 2nd half.
Stremlow worked hard as well.
So I know this is a big game and all, but what about Emely Rodriguez? When do you all think we'll see her on the court? Shes probably the best player on the team and Jan might be holding her back. Will she get some minutes today? Inquiring minds want to know.
/s
How many turnovers did she have on bad passes? She played 7 more minutes than Deal and had a much better stat line
We have good players commit because of the culture here and you're wanting to change it?...Iowa plays like it is a social club, The good teams' players are focused on BBall and constant improvement. So, IMO, it will not change until Iowa changes its culture. You cannot have 40% of your starters who cannot hit their *** with both hands and dribble the ball like it is a football. JMHO
Speaking of "social club", did you see all the cool shots at the beach on their trip to LA???Iowa plays like it is a social club, The good teams' players are focused on BBall and constant improvement. UCLA just got on a roll and couldn't miss. Had to be one of their best shooting games of the season. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes couldn't hit much of anything and continued making so many silly, unforced TOs. Bad, bad combination.I think most of us figured a beatdown was coming today. It's still disappointing.
The defense was at least decent for most of the first half. I'm not sure what happened here in the second half.
Layla is a little slow footed. With Deal and Stremlow as the #2, JJ probably can't get a quicker, better 3 pt shooter in the portal either.
That's why Iowa absolutely has to get a 3/4.
Still puzzled why Layla has regressed, given JJ had a reputation as a developer of the "5".
changing the culture does not preclude good recruiting and abandoning your current culture totally, Duh!We have good players commit because of the culture here and you're wanting to change it?...![]()

I know some will disagree with the argument that you can't play all 15 players, BUT let me ask, would Coach Close have Jada and Kenise Johnson sitting on her bench? Teams have injuries, (sometimes multiple ones) and foul trouble. This is why you need Quality depth, and can't afford to have den mothers, hostesses, tik tok influencers whatever, taking up scholarships. Hopefully by the time roster players are juniors or seniors they are capable of actually contributing. Yet for some time now we've had players on the bench, (even in Lisa'a years) where were keeping players (because everyones valued). Thats great by the way. I'm sure their all really nice young women. BUT, we're talking the talk about staying in the rarified air that CC22 took Iowa womens basketball too, and thats not happening by simply relying on the feel good stories. We've got holes in the lineup (and have for years) because we carry players that will never contribute. That may have been fine when we had the best player who's ever played to have cheerleaders on the bench, but if Jan is serious about being a top 10 team, this practice needs to be reevaluted. Have at it detractors.....I think the point is how far Iowa is from competing with the best teams and how JJs style and coaching and recruiting might make it difficult to get there. Just not nearly enough athleticism or perimeter/skill firepower.
Yes. But don't forget the refs who call it one way on one end and the opposite on the other. Bump, bump, bump, lower-the-shoulder, lay-up. Guess which end is which.Young team vs deep old team with loads of talent. This is what you get.
UCLA is a veteran team full of players who can score. We didn't double Betts much but we also guarded the 3 point line like they had no shooters that concerned us ..it was puzzling.UCLA just got on a roll and couldn't miss. Had to be one of their best shooting games of the season. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes couldn't hit much of anything and continued making so many silly, unforced TOs. Bad, bad combination.

I'm not going to get into the weeds but if there is 1 consistent thing that keeps this team from being better than good it's the inability to execute routine basketball plays like dribbling, throwing passes, catching passes etc. It seems pathological at times. It's like they are thinking about what they should do half the time instead of just doing it. I'm not sure if it's a basketball IQ issue, people playing tight or what but it needs to get cleaned up.
A lot slow footed and marginally athletic. She may progress but they need to back fill with more of an Ava type skill set as insurance.Layla is a little slow footed.

You've been doing a lot of bitching about the refs in a multitude of threads. It wasn't the ref's that lost the game, or changed the outcome.Yes. But don't forget the refs who call it one way on one end and the opposite on the other. Bump, bump, bump, lower-the-shoulder, lay-up. Guess which end is which.![]()
Sorry, but Deal didn't play nearly as bad as our 6th year senior. Do you suppose she'll be starting based on her play in Cali this week? And frankly Jan pulled Deal constantly through out the game. She was hardly the reason they got drilled. At least she knows what a good shot is.Jensen having Deal start today ended up exactly like many of us thought it would.
It seemed like a "I'm gonna prove I didn't make a mistake" decision.
Welp, JJ, you did.
And you know what? She's probably going to start vs Minnesota.
She should not initiate the offense just stay on 3 point line like McCabeKylie is consistently in the wrong spot offensively.
great at defense but on the other end it’s like she’s never watched the game and she’s in her 6th year.
If your referring to anything I said in my last post, tell me that any top 5-10 team, (where we supposedly have visions of being) would have 2 or 3 players every year on their roster that are never going to contribute or play a meaningful minute even after 4 years on the team. We keep hearing how we want "to be great, to continue the momentum". If your depth players are NEVER going to get better and challenge for playing time, then you're always going to be relying on young players to come in and carry the load. Certainly the 12-15 players on your roster aren't going to play much on a game to game basis, but those should be young players who are growing , NOT 4th year players who are NEVER going to play.A loss to the #1 ranked team, on the road, and the coaching experts come out and trash our players and coaches, just like clockwork, it never fails. It must really suck to be such an expert and yet so negative.
That's a little strong isn't?UConn will kill whoever they end up playing
