rewatch the ending, they abused him
I did rewatch the game. Gophers did target hausen wth Reynolds but to be fair none of our guards could handle Reynolds off the dribble and in paint.
Now hausen was very active and had 2 steals late in game. He was helping off his guy and had a couple of questionable fouls called on him.
The last critical sequence Reynolds had ball and Howard helped off crockett unnecessarily which allowed the open three that crockett nailed.
Crockett is gophers 2nd best 3 pt shooter...bad mistake.

I think hausen could be useful in certain matchups if he is making at least 50,% of open looks.

Against certain teams maybe but there is a reason he doesn’t play much.

Guy was c learly giving it his all, but they went at him every single possession. That being said there will certainly be games where he can help us, and last night was one of them when nobody could throw it in the ocean. He's not afraid to shoot it, and had some great energy.

If he gives up more than he scores probably not gonna work. Obviously his playing time reflects this.

He had the best plus/minus in this game.

I think he earned himself more minutes with last nights performance. Im still of the belief that he isn’t getting minutes based on his shot selection and not so much his D. But the energy he brought last night was undeniable!
That belief would be incorrect

I hope he addresses whatever the coaches think he’s doing that keeps him out of games. We lack size. So, until then, we can use all the utside shooting help we can get. I also noticed that they were going at him at the end of the game. Not sure why he wasn’t getting defensive help!

Teams are going to continue to go at Hoss. Defenses don't want to help, if possible. So it's hard to play a guy that requires help.

And although Hoss is improving as a defender, his ceiling on that end just isn't very high.

He simply won't get the minutes this year that fans are craving.

Fans love the 3ball, the passing game, the home run, and backup QB's

In just 7 minutes of playing time, Brendan (+10) was the spark that almost brought the team all the way back.

For those saying Brendan is a defensive liability, this is from a Register beat writer.

Tachman is also an Indiana grad and a hoops junkie.

This is a comment on Brendan's 7 minutes of playing time at Minnesota.

Do you not watch the games?

Yes, Hoss made a couple defensive plays. He was also frequently targeted.

So then you tell us why Hoss isn't playing, Fran. Is he banging Mrs. Ben?

If you can't watch Hoss play D, and watch the other Iowa players play D, and unequivocally tell me that they do not look the same, you don't know what you're looking at

Some interesting tidbits from tonight's postgame:

Ben said Brendan Hausen (played 5 minutes) and Trevin Jirak have both been practicing really well. He said that's why he put Hausen in, and he wanted to put Jirak in.

Said he wants to reward the guys that have been doing well in practice.

Added that Hausen has been a great leader.

One of the beat writers, when Brendan was in the game last night for 5 minutes:

Can't get upset at the effort from Brendan Hausen on defense. It's 100% there.

8 IOWA players played 10 or more minutes.

I love Combs and Howard. Tough, smart, heady players but they cant shoot. Shaving a few minutes off each of their playing time in favor of Hausen would be a net positive imo. Gives better spacing on the floor as well as a real shooting threat. His defense isn't THAT bad.
Agreed - especially last nite!!
Sorry, but Combs (still like him) was getting abused by Woods. I think Hausen’s bigger body may have helped stop the bleeding, but unfortunately we will never know…😕

Bigger body? Combs is 6’4, the same exact size as hausen. Howard got switched on him late, it should’ve been done sooner.

Based on my eyeball test, yes. Combs seems much leaner IMHO. 6’4 seems pretty generous for both of them too…😎

I’d put Hausen on either 2nd or 3rd team all conference if he just got more playing time. 😏

I just hope Jirak can develop faster. We need size in a hurry. Our size is our biggest handicap.
With only one recruit signed for next year (Ethan Harris), we are going to have to go back the portal this spring to fill some needs. McCollum has said point guard and the post will be his priorities, and I don’t think anybody will disagree. But the team’s success moving forward will be closely linked to how successful we are in the portal this year, and we are all going to learn what kind of recruiter Ben is.

Jirak does not look to be ready for awhile. He’s got a lot of work to do on his body (my opinion) still, and he’s got to get much quicker. Go watch these top teams and tell me who he is going to guard?

Definitely a work in progress. Just hoping for a little expediency. ;)

IIRC, bigs were the most expensive during the last portal potty season.

if he gets hot could be a really big boost for the team down the stretch.

Especially come B1G Tournament time, when we need as many fresh bodies as possible

The guy is fearless and there's not a shot he doesn't like. He'll launch from way deep and tonight he hit 50% of his 6 attempts from 3.

Last game, there were times when it seemed like some of our players were timid to take a shot; that's not an issue with Brendan. ;)
