He was 2-5 from 3 and 2-6 for the game. He's the archetype of Doug McDermott. He hit 9 FTs.

Brendan was 9-9 (100%) from the FT line last year in Ames (80-61 win).

This year? The ENTIRE Iowa team was just 3-5 (60%) from the Free Throw line (Stirtz was 1-2; Banks was 2-2; Sage was 0-1).

It's very simple, who would you rather be on the court, a rested Hausen or Stirtz taking a break in the corner. If Stirtz was really that tired in the last three minutes that it became obvious that he was taking a break, then I'm guessing his "break" started a long time before that but it just wasn't obvious.

Jess Settles (was the color guy) said during today's TV broadcast that Brendan got hurt this summer and was still working his way back. Anyone know more on this?

In today's 91-51 rout of Western Michigan, here were Brendan's stats::

19 minutes

4-7 (57%) from three
0-1 from inside the arc
.................................................
4-8 (50%) overall shooting

1-1 (100%) FTS

13 Points
2 Assists (0 turnovers)
0 Rebounds
0 Steals

0 Blocks

And I think he played good defense.

After listening to the post game, I discovered that Ben really admires Brendan's leadership both on and off the court. Said it was really great, and that he looks for qualities like that. He also said he believes there will be games that Brendan can win for them.

I find it concerning Ben only gives him time when we're shellacking a terrible team. His firepower may become invaluable down the stretch against a fairly stacked Big Ten conference, especially when we've had stretches not being able to generate offense when needed.

You just posted in another thread that you thought McCollum is exactly what we needed. And then you post this. So he either knows what he’s doing or he doesn’t know what he’s doing?

Ideally I think McCollum would love to have another 3 point shooter on the floor like he did at Drake last year. Forgot his name but I’m thinking at least 80% of his shots were 3’s. Along with Stirtz he basically played almost every minute of every game. But he was a really solid defender (not super quick) but again had played in Ben’s system 4 or 5 years I’m not sure why Hausen isn’t seeing the court. Maybe he’s not 100% healthy? Or again is a lousy defender? I trust McCollum to play the right guys.

He is exactly what we needed. But that doesn't mean I have blind faith into everything he does. Hausen is a great talent, and I'd like to see him used more. Most fans and the media seem to agree with that statement.

If you'd like more information about my thoughts on McCollum, check it out here.

You're contradicting yourself. The Iowa fans and media haven't seen quality basketball for years, or consistent quality basketball for years. Mac knows what he needs to do to win. Hell, we should have won in Ames with a mid-major roster. Trust the man!

I think Stirtz is in for a tough year now that teams have figured out how to guard him. They're picking him up as soon as he hits half court. Our team keeps backup up farther and farther away from the basket hoping the other team will back off, but they're not. We don't have anyone that can drive past their defender.
Doom and gloom.

According to the brilliant fans in cyclone nation, Iowa = Drake. Their top 5 team figured out how to neutralize Stirtz (Drake's best player) by hacking and holding him as soon as he 'hit half court'.

Yet in their Super Bowl, in Hallowed Hilton, with the refs in their back pocke, they barely squeaked out a win.

We must have a few kids doing something right? 🤷‍♂️

It’s not doom and gloom, it’s reality. Ben has already figured out he needs to sub out stirtz.

Never thought I'd see Iowa bball fans clamoring for a slow, white three point shooter.

I recall the media attending practice during the summer and Hausen was out dealing with some leg injuries. Wondering if he’s got some hamstring thing going on. He definitely doesn’t move well.

I don't know details about his summer injury or if he is still hampered or not. I never saw him play before joining Iowa. That said, he was putting in effort on defense but didn't appear to be as quick as the other players. I don't know if we've seen him at his best yet but he can definitely shoot the ball.

He isn't a Drake boy so he won't get benefit either so he won't play much
Coaches play who theyre comfortable playing. We complained about Fran forever playing guys like JBo who could shoot but couldn’t guard anyone and now we’re complaining the other way.

Watching him, I sometimes feel he’s rushing, and he hasn’t found his game at Iowa yet. And I’m sure Jess wouldn’t say he was injured if he wasn’t. So, I’m hoping he finds his game soon, recovers from his injuries, and plays more. We have a long season ahead and can use every skilled player we can get.

I'm not contradicting anything. I've seen people say the same thing about Ben being the perfect fit, but disagreeing with Alvaro starting on the bench, for example. There's nuance to all of this. Hausen is a proven talent, and lit up ISU last year. He has that potential here too. I love what Ben has done, but me, fans, and the media all find how he's handled Hausen to be bizarre.

No there isn't nuance to any of it. Fans' opinions mean nothing.

And now you're calling it a mid-major roster 🤣

WTF. They played mid-major ball last year. In the post directly quoted I literally said "Trust the man". What, specifically, is different than what I've said all along? Ben himself talked in his presser about how these guys only had low to mid-major offers. You're a f'ing Loony Tune, dude.

Don't play dumb.

If I'd had called it a mid-major roster over the summer you would have blown a gasket.

I, at one point cited recruiting rankings, which you completely discredited, and trumped with offerings of "trust Ben".

Is it the roster you made people to believe over the summer. Or is it a mid-major roster? You can't have both.

Yes, you're doing what you've done all along. You're now calling it a mid-major roster for the purpose of illustrating how well Ben is coaching them up.

That's not the worst thing in the world. But for purposes of being real, what's been taking place all along is "framing". Either your thoughts have been framed by your Ben colored glasses, or you have framed your supportive content to fit your Ben glorifying narratives.

Onlookers: please be clear that I support Ben 100%. This is only to call out a certain poster for being a certain type of fan. Again, not the worst thing in the world, and I appreciate the support of the Hawkeyes. But a certain type of fan, nonetheless

I know this goes without saying but you're an idiot. Have I ever once not believed in this roster? Have I ever said to not trust McCollum? Have I ever called it a "high major" roster? These guys quite literally played mid-major ball last year, and none with a high major offer, outside of Koch. You're admitting that I was as confident in this roster this past summer as I am now. Additionally, I'm STILL saying trust Ben, which you also admit.

What type of fan am I? Someone who you admit has been 100% loyal to the coach and roster since it's inception? And you're saying that's bad? You say you "support Ben 100%" but also try to knock me for supporting Ben 100%?

Outside of being completely brain dead, what is your hang up? You don't even know what you're arguing for or against at this point. Someone needs to alert the orderly and let them know eyes has escaped the Seclusion Room. You're as crazy as a **** house rat. Stop actually being dumb.

It's not a mid-major roster. Just because many of them started and/or were recruited to play at Drake does not mean they are simply mid major talent now. He's a good coach - he's not that good of a coach.
