McKenna's game tonight

She played perhaps 15-17 minutes and scored 19 points. Lots of assists and rebounds. Archbishop Mitty guards handle the ball too much and attempt to drive through the lane each time down the court. If they got the ball to McKenna she could have scored thirty tonight. Also, the AM coach platoons and subs a great deal because they are generally winning by large numbers. With 30 seconds left, AM 76 Riordan 29.

We moved from Dubuque to Mesa AZ in 1986. My home town of Muscatine had a gym that held 2500. We had around 1000 students. Mesa HS had maybe 500 seats with around 2000 students - a whopping 6 or 8 rows around the floor. WOW

Looking ahead imagine Iowa running the high low game with McKenna as the player at the free throw line vs it being Hannah.
Agree it JUST a free throw. Hanna is great but on offense she only is consistent in the lane on lay ups. And great at that...

It's getting worse. I'm hoping it rebounds at some point but students don't show up for each other. Everyone is so busy.
How much worse can it get? Attended a boys high school BB game a couple weeks ago ….maybe 350 in attendance in a gym that holds around 1500. The home student section max about 80-90 and this was a contest between two large class SD schools (enrollment 1000+) - a quick occasional glance and you notice a substantial number occupied by their I-phones. Neither team highly ranked but still.

I only attended because my son is in the pep band (about 25strong) and most of them left when they could at the start of the 4th quarter.

No, you are right. That's where we are.

I still think it can get worse...

Just my opinion here but I'm VERY afraid of being overrun by club sports at the high school level. So many club coaches promise the world to these kids, they can pick their own teams, "get" to travel every weekend to play "elite" teams, have posters and banners made, host media days, "win" national tournaments (6th division but who is counting, it's a title), will get them D1 schollys (but never offer to pay full tuition if they can't), tell them colleges don't care about their school carrers, and talk down about their school coaches, programs, teammates, etc...

At many big schools, club teams are operating year round. We have had athletes in my program that were told if they play in a school basketball (winter) and soccer (spring) game over a volleyball practice then they would be ineligible for a national tournament. This has happened in junior high and high school. Big schools are seeing kids on club teams on varsity, JV and JV2 levels and all have been told they deserve more. I hear it in my classroom. I hear the comments of "favoritism" all the time as an excuse that they just aren't better. That, of course, leads to transfers instead of hard work to earn a spot.

Why all this matters to the original point...

A- kids are caring more about their club right now than school sports and representing their school, classmates, and community.

B- if the school and community continue to not care, what is holding school sports together? In the world of transfers, kids will leave at any time with no sense of loyalty to anyone but themselves.

C- with budgets strained as they are, the conversation is just starting to scratch the surface in the school sports world about how long we can hold on this way.

D- The "me first" attitude is clearly prevalent in these kids lives. Your experience is a prime example. Our band kids leave right after half time, too. I get mad when I see them all take off but I also get the idea that if they don't get the athletes at their concerts, why would they stay for their sports?

Sorry, really long rant. I'm trying to fix this stuff and our school is doing stuff too. We have our programs athletes going to elementary schools to play with kids and talk about our program. We have a bunch of athletes going to read to kids and "buddy" with others that have behavior issues but love sports. That idea came from our AD and I think it is great.

Good analysis, solid points. Where I live “school loyalty” appears to diminish relative to school/community size. Rural school students/small communities appear to rally around their sport teams. Sporting events are community social gatherings. Larger urban & suburban not as much.

Yes, and it didn't used to be that way. It absolutely blows.

My daughter plays softball in Minnesota and is in the 10U level. Only sport she plays to go along with band. Part of the problem for the move to clubs that I’ve seen is a lot of city associations suck, and are ran by parents that suck only looking out for their own kids and playing the “good ole boys club” in terms of who they allow to coach and/or join the managing board.

My daughter has at least one more year of city ball left, this is where she plays teams from other cities in the metro area and several tournaments in the spring/summer. I was not part of the in crowd and was excluded from helping assistant coach this summer by the managing board. The guy that was chosen sucked as a coach and my daughter regressed in terms of confidence because of it. I’m a believer in not worrying about wins/losses much, especially on league nights, but they should be coaching the girls to fulfill their entire potential. And don’t tell me that I can help out if I didn’t like it. I did offer several times and was declined by the coach every time except for the very final practice when I throwing front toss in a batting cage.

She’s played winter development ball with a club team the past three winters which has been great because they focus on skills and development more than anything else. They play in a dome league where the games don’t matter so they work on testing new things and identifying and correcting mistakes. Then they play a couple of tournaments where they test themselves to see how well they can do. I like the mix of that, and the semi-professional coaches that the club has are also very good with them.

Long story short, the clubs can often times offer an experience in developing players that the cities can’t. You pay a premium for that, but some people are willing to make that sacrifice. I honestly would prefer that she just play with her city and eventually her school. But we’ll see how this next summer of city ball works out. I also haven’t heard good things about the school coaches at many schools. Many are only concerned about winning games to the detriment of appropriately developing players correctly. And several have issues with being verbally abusive to players. All things that wouldn’t be allowed in a club as people would either complain to make changes or just move to another club.

She's back and back BIG. 6'2" McKenna Woliczko for Archbishop Mitty Basketball.

2+ hours after this aired (Thur 5pm on @KPIXtv), McKenna scored 22 pts (9/12 FG), 14rebs, 4 assists, 3 steals in limited minutes in a 95-24 rout at Valley Christian (San Jose). Coach Sue Phillips played every Monarch who dressed.

Is this next year's rotation?

PG: Chat / Kennise
SG: Strem / Levin
SF: Deal / Transfer
PF: Journey / McKenna
C: Heiden / Hayes

Wild cards being Teagan and any transfers we might get. Emely is gone. Thinking we'll need 3 transfers for depth.

All Around Star.

@IowaWBB commit McKenna Woliczko has racked up double-doubles in 2/3rds of her games for Archbishop Mitty this season!

Our @jerseymikes Naismith Girls’ High School POY Midseason Team star is coming into the homestretch with season averages of 20.8 points and 11.1 rebounds.

I'm hoping Journey will work on her outside shot during the off season, and be able to play some SF as well. Or possibly Mckenna.

McKenna is a better high school player than Addie was. I think she starts.
She is the main reason I think our offense will be better next year. She will replace Hannah and will be able to play the high low but knock down open jumpers and threes. I still would like to see them get one more outside shooter.

I like how fans think high school players are going to be like Caitlin Clark coming out of high school. Not going to happen, Journey will be your starter at the 4 to begin the year.

I think Journey starts at the 3. I'd go with Ava at center, Mckenna at the stretch 4, journey as a monster on defense and rebounding at the 3, Addie at shooting guard, and Chit Chat at point. This is a powerful rebounding and defensive lineup with the ability to create space for our girls to maximize what they do best on offense.

I am hopeful they go back to their 4 out offense next year. I would like us to find at least one strong perimeter player through the portal. Then we would use Ava, Layla, Journey, and McKenna in a rotation for our 4&5 positions. I believe McKenna will stretch the floor to help create more space for penetration to the hoop. I really believe that would open the floor for Addie and Chit Chat. It appears to me that Addie has in her DNA the desire to attack and score off the dribble. She hasn’t had the space in the triangle offense this year. I think it would be a win-win for everyone.
