Agree Gallagher would not likely beat Aroujo but Cannon already beat Taylor 16-4 at the Collegiate Duals earlier this year…
I will very surprised if Cannon places top 5 at the NCAA tournament. He is the weakest #1 ranked guy at any weight. What kind of odds would somebody want to take him against the field? I would side bet that Taylor places ahead of him straight up.

I agree with this. I don't care what happened in November. Cannon and Taylor are both low-AA type guys and I think Taylor will finish a place or two higher.

He beat the defending national champ 16-4 and won't make top 5 at nationals?

Interesting.

I agree with it based on the eye test so far this year. We'll see.

I have Shapiro, Duke, Larkin, and Robideau all above him off the top of my head, and I do expect Taylor to be better in March than he was in November.

Ever since Tyler decked him at B1Gs, I’ve had no respect for Taylor. Maybe I hated his celebration after he won a Natty I thought should have been Kasak’s. Maybe I hate Mark Manning so much that the Pope could win in a Husker singlet and I’d boo him too. I don’t know, but I never credit Taylor as a “returning champ” when considering any match up. He just seems like a 6-7 guy to me.

It was quite frustrating to see Taylor at the top of the podium with the way Kasak ragdolled him in their 2 matches.

Not bad. But you forgot to address positive infinity. What do we do about that? 😬
Positive Infinity, wearing robes, etc. One thing is clear; Cael Sanderson lives rent-free in OSU's head.

I think an apropos analogy is OSU wrestling vs PSU wrestling is similar to OSU football vs PSU football when it comes to mental blocks.

OSU is the only school that has a legitimate shot at breaking PSU's winning streak. The fact that PSU is wrestling at home and has a mental edge, makes me lean PSU.

But, OSU does legitimately concern me.

People always seem to under value the opponent of Gable that day. Larry Owings was an under hyped BEAST!
There's a lot of truth in what you say, especially in that particular tournament. He pinned all of his opponents going into his finals match against Gable, and everyone who was there, (including me) expected their finals showdown to be exciting. We were not disappointed.

Ranking on Intermat

PSU vs OSU
125 - 1 vs 2
133 - 4 vs 2
142 - 11 vs 1
149 - 1 vs 4
157 - 3 vs 1
165 - 1 vs 18
174 - 1 vs 4
184 - 1 vs 5
197 - 1 vs 10
285 - 12 vs 3

When is the last time a team with eight top-5 wrestlers was considered an underdog?
When the sport was basketball, not wrestling.

So you wouldn't want to see Pope Leo XIV on the same team as AJ Ferrari?

Does a pillar of salt count against the 30 man roster? o_O

Yep. I saw that match, and several others. He wrestled at full peak in November and has looked slightly worse each time out imo. We will see what happens. Duke,Robideau,Shipiro, Larkin,Taylor,Watters,Zerban, and Cardenas are all guys I expect to out[place him. I really doubt he even places, but draws and injuries happen. Can you think of a softer number 1? Do you think he is really the best 157? I can see someone believing him better than everyone other than my top 4, but I don't. Edit- He didn't duck Taylor he was injured as Corby pointed out.

I’m afraid the Pope would realize what a truly great, God-fearing man AJ is and Nebraska would start dominating recruiting. Not sure Cael could summon Brigham Young and Hyrum Smith to beat back the tide.

He just ducked Taylor in a rematch so at least Tan Tom thought his win was a fluke.
Go watch his match against MN he didn't duck he was actually hurt

I just did. He does appear injured. His story is cool and he is a good wrestler, but I think that weight class has a few who are better. Taylor looked really bad at the Tulsa event but the whole Nebraska team seemed a little off while tOSU looked like a peaked team to me. Did you notice that too? Mendez always seems to be in peak form like MM or Levi so he doesn't count. Feldman has looked good all year too.

You were there? How cool!

All of those pins before wrestling Gable was definitely elite... and intimidating. Gable has said on more than one occasion that Owings got into his head. He obsessed with focusing on wrestling moves to counter various pinning combinations before they wrestled.

Gable would also say that Owings' statements about coming after Gable psyched him out. Gable said he was always used to being the Hunter, not the hunted. It messed up Gable's mindset going into their match.

On a conceptually related note, my brother used to run a gambling operation and was known to always carry two concealed hand guns. Needless to say, he generally had little problems with making collections. LOL.

Anyway, one of his clients lost a lot of money and refused to pay. Before my brother had a chance to call his client, the client called my brother and said, "I know about your reputation for carrying two handguns and I know you are a tough guy. But, understand this. I usually carry an Uzi and if I ever see you anywhere near me, I am going to unload a full F***ing clip into your mother F***ing *** before you can draw those pistols."

My brother said that he never had an experience where one of his clients became violently aggressive... before he ever threatened them. He said it totally messed up his mindset, and he made a business decision to not force a collection.

The mind can affect the best of us.

Cannon has a gas tank and is big for the weight my opinion is that he will AA. Ohio st did look to be the team in the best shape and wrestling the best at NDI

Yeah, it’s definitely a little hyperbolic to say he’s not going to be an AA at all, but I do agree with kt that Cannon is the weakest #1 ranked wrestler of any weight class.

I think i read once Larry dropped alot of weight in order to get a chance to wrestle Dan. Or is my memory not serving?

Pope apparently already wrestled for Nebraska in 1989-90 timeframe. Not sure how much winning he did tho.

Owings was the only guy to score (one point) on Gable in the US Olympic trials and no one scored on Gable at Munich.

Gable said the loss to Larry motivated him to win the Olympics.
That's another great point. Thanks for bringing it up. Another point about Owings was that he was a finalist for three years at the NCAA championships. That's no light achievement. Owings was an elite wrestler. Gable didn't lose to a chump.

Gable said that the most important thing he learned from losing to Owings is that no matter how hard he trained, he was still vulnerable mentally if he let something go to his head. He said that after losing that match, in addition to training he worked hard on keeping a positive mindset. I don’t know if he got professional help in that area, but he obviously took control of the situation. His experience underscores the importance of mental conditioning in order to achieve peak results.
