There's a lot of truth in what you say, especially in that particular tournament. He pinned all of his opponents going into his finals match against Gable, and everyone who was there, (including me) expected their finals showdown to be exciting. We were not disappointed.
You were there? How cool!
All of those pins before wrestling Gable was definitely elite... and intimidating. Gable has said on more than one occasion that Owings got into his head. He obsessed with focusing on wrestling moves to counter various pinning combinations before they wrestled.
Gable would also say that Owings' statements about coming after Gable psyched him out. Gable said he was always used to being the Hunter, not the hunted. It messed up Gable's mindset going into their match.
On a conceptually related note, my brother used to run a gambling operation and was known to always carry two concealed hand guns. Needless to say, he generally had little problems with making collections. LOL.
Anyway, one of his clients lost a lot of money and refused to pay. Before my brother had a chance to call his client, the client called my brother and said, "I know about your reputation for carrying two handguns and I know you are a tough guy. But, understand this. I usually carry an Uzi and if I ever see you anywhere near me, I am going to unload a full F***ing clip into your mother F***ing *** before you can draw those pistols."
My brother said that he never had an experience where one of his clients became violently aggressive... before he ever threatened them. He said it totally messed up his mindset, and he made a business decision to not force a collection.
The mind can affect the best of us.
