Losing Paul and Cam Spencer to the portal was the catalyst that sent RU basketball spiraling. What are you talking about in not losing anyone to it?
I didn't say "losing anyone to it".
I said it's been a net neutral and likely mild net positive for Rutgers.
The portal both gives and takes.
With nearly only gives to Rutgers up until Strong.
Cam Spencer was a transfer in who then transfered out.
He came in as a mercenary and left as one.
It wasnt come 2-3 year "Rutgers man" that was recruited and developed.
He's the worst example of "Transfer Portal is horrible and needs to end."
He literally wouldn't have been here if not for the transfer rules and being poached by Rutgers first.
Paul was a 5th year graduate transfer. Had nothing to do with the transfer portal setup.
Again, not some up and coming developed player that left.
Nearly everyone was ready to drive Paul to the airport after the Minnesota game.
Pike even brought in a (allegedly) high level PG transfer in Fernandes before Paul even left.
Sure, after the fact it appears his loss was more impactful that initially expected.
But thats because of how horrible Pike was at bringing in dpplayers.
By comparison, Northwestern is losing a star freshman CB.
Rutgers is now losing a star junior WR.
If Dylan Grant somehow turns into a star during conference play and leaves for the SEC?
Or Lino Mark transfers to Illinois?
Those would be examples of "Portal sucks, we can't retain our young promosing players".
