The real shame is the true student athlete who does earn their way onto their favorite school for both an education and playing sports at a high level. And there are still a lot of these kids out there. But now- our 4.0 Student athletes that have worked their way into being a very good starter- can easily lose it all to an incoming NIL star who doesn't give a damn about education or school.

At Rutgers over the years, and even now, we have been spoiled by kids who do want a Rutgers Education as well. And we have had plenty of players here that have reached the NFL as well as earn their degree.

The current College model of NIL and Portal- just sucks. And for more than just fans.

Still waiting for the first post saying "Oh man. It stinks that guy transfered. He wasnt good and we can get a better transfer but I still would take the less talented player."

I must have missed all the "Gavin Wimsatt isn't good but he's been here 3 years. We shouldnt try and replace him with a more talented transfer QB. We should just stick it with him anyway."

Every fan "laments" transfers until they are faced with the reality of saying no to a "incoming NIL star" and the team being worse.

I'm planning to move to NC in 2027. This is going to be my last season for MBB Tix & next fall will be my last for football.

I will offer my fandom to coastal Carolina University and make the 1.5 hour trip for all home games & a bunch of their away games.
All I ask is that they pay for my gas
UNCW men’s bball is pretty good, small venue, good places to eat nearby. Have you made your visit to Wilmington area yet?

This is how it should be. No way schools are playing by the rules if EVERYONE at P4 schools are academically eligible if nothing else based on the demands of being a student. You hear these players talk about training/preparing from 5:30 AM - 6:00 PM. When the hell are they taking classes? Bet it’s now gone from online classes in dorm rooms to a library of online recordings of classes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe classes are included in the 5:30 AM - 6 PM schedule.

We have! We've gone 3x now, last time in November we went out with a realtor.
We will go back again in May to look around with the realtor again & hope to make a decision on a place by next fall. We'd prefer to buy new build & found a couple we really liked.

You DO see the difference between sucking at your job and being replaced and being supported with food, shelter, medical treatment, training, and coaching for three years and then being seduced by a bigger paycheck ?

IDK if that’s the case for athletes at this point. I do know many athletes (and students) now take online classes from their dorm rooms. I’ve heard that some schools are allowing recorded class sessions that can be watched at the athletes leisure arguing that there is no difference between an athlete sitting down for a live online class session at 2:30 PM vs sitting down to watch a recording at 8:00 PM or on a weekend. If class recording becomes the norm this whole academic sham just keeps getting worse.

You know, I could have used that back when I was in school. It's been my experience that some of the professors are so boring that I could have used their lectures for the nights when I had trouble falling asleep at home...instead of dozing in the lecture hall. ;)

Not only that but imagine not having to get out of bed for class. It’s all a joke.

First we have guys having signing ceremonies for staying for another year at a school.

Then we have NBA drafted players coming back to college to play.

Now we have this. I mean, seriously??

Not surprising since it is an all new staff at OSU.

when you are jumping from school to school every year it's unlikely you will end up with a degree.

Not every school accepts credits/classes from other schools. Basically, they are playing a sport and collecting credits in the hopes they get to go pro....and if they don't all they have is a bunch of credits and no diploma to hang on a wall.
Credits? Credits??? (Played to Jim Moras playoff thing)...Major College sports ARE OVER. Media is just loving it too as they helped in the demise long ago.

I do notcwatchnpro sportscsnd my college interest is down 80%. I simply DO NOT CARE.

This will end when people stop buying tickets, stop watching on TV, and stop buying merchandise. If anyone out there in college sports think this can’t happen, in my lifetime I have seen plenty of sports either decline or fall off a cliff—boxing, track and field, tennis, NASCAR, golf, hunting, bowling, racquetball

I don’t know who it is going to be, maybe Temple, Wake Forest, Tulsa, New Mexico State, etc., but somebody in Division 1-A is going to wake up very soon and realize the numbers and the situation just aren’t working. Either they are going to drop down to Division 1-AA or they are going to drop every sport except football, both basketball teams, and maybe baseball and a few ladies sports.

Well, 50 yard line season tickets are $200 each, including the student fund fee...and it looks like parking is somewhere around $70 for the season....
FBS fandom is going to save me a ton of money ...
I'm old. Cheering for the Chanticleers seems natural.

Mr. Screw will have so many courses to play. Should check out the various golf passes.
Our base was in Myrtle Beach but often played courses in North Carolina.

There will be tiers

50 super schools which Rutgers wont be a part of and a 2nd division of 50 lessers that Ru can compete in. Just a question of whether its 5 or 10 years down the line

Contracts. Make the players sign 2 or 3 year deals. It wouldn't stop the transfers but slow it down and reward teams for getting the right kids out of high school.

It only "sucks" in one direction is my point.
Fans complain about losing players.
But fans (and coaches) don't complain when it comes to pushing out players and bringing in transfers.

How many people are excited for next years basketball roster with JMike, Grant, Dortch, Zrno, Badalau, Ogbole and Fall leading the way?
Players who chose Rutgers to get a degree. Everyone wants them all staying right?

Nobody cried over Wimsatt getting pushed out or Jalen Miller or Chol or Woolf being pushed out.

Some are even calling for a transfer QB this year too and not rely on Surace.

Wait....hunting is a sport ?
Sitting up in a tree waiting for a deer to come along for you to shoot is a sport ?
IMO it's only a sport if you take a knife and go chasing a bear.

MrScrew will be happy about the golf. Our plan is to relocate outside of Wilmington and there's a lot of golf around there too.
Meg, we will miss you and "MrScrew."

There are only two ways to solve the current problems. First, as another poster mentioned, there could be collective bargaining between the schools and the athletes that would define the rules for transferring. I doubt that will happen. That would involve having players unionize as in the pros. Congress could authorize unionization at private universities, but unionization at state institutions like Rutgers is in the hands of the states. It's hard for me to imagine all of the states going along with unionization -- even assuming Congress is willing to do it.

The other answer is for Congress to step in and write the rules itself or to authorize someone else to write the rules. The SCORE act would do that. It was brought to the floor of the House of Representatives last month, but the bill was cleared when it became apparent that it didn't have the votes to pass. Even if a bill passes the House, it will need the support of sixty Senators in the Senate, which means that the bill can't be passed by Republicans alone. I am not optimistic about what will happen.

What a tool. Those three places, and the desirable areas in them, are more than fine. For ex, CA popluation has again increased factually. There are plenty of receding value taker locations where one can be amongst those with their "political" (not really political but sure we'll play along with the coded language) bent.

I guess I am not one of those people. Let's take GW for instance. I would have much prefer he get beat out by one of the QB's that were behind him or a incoming player. And then, maybe he decides to stay, get his degree and be available if needed, or he transfers down to get playing time.

Even now- still feel that way but we do have to play the hand we are dealt. And what I am saying- it really sucks. And to be honest, let's say we find the money to go the route of Indiana - it may be fun but it still will have lost something for me.

And I think many people could live with NIL if the transfer portal went back to sit out a year unless you are a redshirt Senior.

I see people like Mrs. Screw and some other really good friends that have been die hard Rutgers fans and have had season tickets to Football and Basketball for years. And we are talking about some that have been doing it so long and so dedicated to it that they sit right behind our bench in MBB and great seats for football - and they no longer care all that much if they now miss a game much less miss it on TV.

And that is a shame.

Not much to do to change it but also very hard to celebrate it.

Bac, I think you are 100 percent right that the Super Conference is coming. Maybe it will happen in a couple years when Clemson, Florida State, Miami, others leave the ACC or maybe it will be late 2030s, but it is coming. I do think we will still have a spot based on population, number of big corporations, and geography. I just don’t see the TV people leaving the entire Northeast to just State Penn. That being said, we would be the Atlanta Hawks/Winnipeg Jets/Cleveland Browns/Minnesota Twins of college sports.

Who doesn't like:
  • 25 year old "college" athletes (imagine being 17 on your HS freshman football team)
  • college athletes in their 6th and 7th year of college
  • athletes at their 3rd school

I really do want to see how committed to this our new President and AD are. They are doing well in raising money, so let's see. I also don't see a long leash on Greg/Pike either. Greg will get this year and not sure where Pike stands.

That said- I agree, Rutgers would most likely get a seat at the table in a super conference.

I don't believe so.
We have been the one "poaching" the best players from lowered teams.
Same for basketball - other than Clif?

This is the first significant underclassmen to be "poached" from Rutgers.

Hence my earlier point - everyone has loved the transfer world until now.
Including Schiano and Pike.
Pike has been able to run off his underperforming recruits every year.

There's no "the transfer portal is horrible. JMU is losing an impact defensive player!" posts in this thread.

Are you taking the position Rutgers should not go after players in the portal? That would be ludicrous. The portal giveth and taketh away. That's life.
Not following your logic, maybe I'm misreading, but sound like this Dilbert strip:

Yup. I was a hs coach back during Greg's first seasons at RU. Mike Miello gave us a tour of the new weight room and football facility and the first thing he showed us was the academic support room in the facility. He stressed the importance Greg placed on academics and his passion for every kid to get a degree. Mike also pointed out the obvious, it didn't make any sense to devote time and money recruiting a player, signing him, and then letting him flunk out because you didn't give him the support and guidance he needed to succeed.
That's what did Graber in. I think he lost the equivalent of a recruiting class to academics during his tenure.
