My son and I each ranked the teams 1-16 last night. Here were mine:

1) Vandy
2) Bama
3) Arkansas
4) Kentucky
5 Tennessee
6) Florida
7) Georgia
8) Auburn
9) LSU
10) Ole Miss
11) Texas
12) OU
13) A&M
14) Miss St
15) Mizzou
16) South Carolina

SEC POY: Labaron Philon

It’s hard for me to put Vandy first too, not trying to be a homer but if the Dores stay healthy, the 3 point guards are really good together and make things difficult on opponents on both ends of the floor. Tyler Tanner, Duke Miles and Frankie Collins have been really good so far.

I also think the Cats are trending and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them hold the SEC Crown by the end of the season. I think that all depends on the health of Lowe and Quaintance though, those two have to be healthy to compete.

What do y’all think?

Collins is out indefinitely with a torn meniscus

Yep - worst case is mid February return but Byington said that was reported wrong and he should be back sooner.

Collins is our 3rd PG, and while he’s important, Tanner and Miles are a good bit better than Frankie (who I love).

Love it!

I would be extremely impressed with Coach Pope if he win the SEC with this team after the start they had. Injuries can galvanize a team though and getting JQ back mid season is like pulling a Baylor at this point. Quaintance is a stud.

Why?

Im guessing you haven’t watched us play if you really feel like that.

Well I have, but it's more of a gut feeling. Vandy also hasn't played a single ranked team.

I just don't think Tanner and Miles are an elite backcourt. Plus the 3 transfers that haven't panned were some of your highest-rated ones ~ Harris, Collins, Kimble. (2 from injury of course). Plus losing Edwards and Carey from last year seems like it would be net neutral, not a positive.

They just seem like that SEC school that blows through the non-con and gets hyped, like Oklahoma last year (#12), South Carolina in 23/24 (#11), Miss St in 22/23 (#15), and LSU in 21/22 (#13).

Instead of lying, you could have just said, “you’re correct, I just haven’t see Vandy play so far this season so I just put a hot take out there and then defended it with some weird info I pulled after doing a bare minimum of research.”

Please don’t double down at this point. Just admit you don’t know anything about this Vandy team.

FYI:

Most college basketball people think Tyler Tanner and Duke Miles form one of the best backcourts in the game. Most college basketball people think Vandy has one of the top shooters in the game in Tyler Nickel. While those three are unquestionably our best 3 players, Devin McGlockton is a really good glue guy (10 and 7) and we have some nice depth pieces in Frankie Collins, Tyler Harris, AK Okereke and Jalen Washington.

Look, we may fall off but just saying we haven’t played any top 25 teams and that’s why you think we’re not any good indicates you haven’t watched us play.

We could definitely lose Saturday at South Carolina too, I’m under no delusions about our team but when we play well, we’re pretty good.

I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see Arkansas going 11-7. I will be surprised if they don't go at least 13-5.

Did I mention, I hope I am wrong?

Arky is good, their best is really good but they go as Trevon Brazile goes and I don’t believe he’s consistent enough to show up 13 times. Dude is Bi Polar as it gets.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but Vandy will, in all likelihood, come WAY back down to earth very quickly once conference play starts. Sure, they’re unbeaten but their schedule has been a cakewalk.
Best wins? Saint Mary’s and SMU.
Number of true road games and location? 3 @ UCF, Memphis and Wake Forest.
Vandy may turn out to be really good, but they haven’t even been tested yet against any top tier competition.

we have to have hope here, bro.
the elite teams in the SEC (Bama, UT, Florida last year at least) are capable of going to another level that UK just isn't right now, imo. see sweet sixteen vs UT or SEC tourney vs Bama
so the prospect of UK being worse than Vandy, Georgia or Cal at Arkansas is just too much to bear. We NEED you to regress.
When even the cellar dwellers of the conference are making moves that show they're serious about winning, and we have Mark Pope, our status is a lot more precarious. You are now a threat to us.
Best of luck to you personally but I hope Vandy goes winless the rest of the year...just being honest, lol

I get it, bro. Just wanted my boy above to realize that all hot takes are welcome, but at least be honest here.

Also, we weren’t always cellar dwellers in hoops lol! Byington was a great hire, dude is legit.

Ok I was thinking mainly of the Kevin Stallings years, that's my era. Maybe not technically in the cellar, more like mediocre than awful

Stallings had 2 Sweet 16’s, had some awful luck or probably would have had several more. He also beat the last UK team to win a Natty in the SEC Tournament Championship game.

Bryce Drew and Jerry Stackhouse though, cellar is the correct word!!

I may end up being wrong but I don’t see Florida as a high end team this year. Their backcourt took a significant step back with Fland and Lee from Clayton Jr and Company.
I've been saying this same thing since the rankings first came out. You can't lose those 4 guards, replace them with Fland and Lee and think they are still a top 10 team.
If Florida didn’t win it all last year, they wouldn't rank this years team that high.

I was gonna start a thread with my predictions for our record with and without Lowe. Thanks for saving me the time; we had the exact same numbers with and without. But I was only going to say 13-5 with Lowe because the record I really think we'll have with him would make me look like a silly homer with blue tinted glasses.

But that is how I look...

I watched the entire Western Ky and Memphis game weirdo. Also, both guards that I mentioned played in the SEC last year. I've seen them plenty.

As long as this team stays healthy mainly JQ, I don’t see us losing more than a couple games in this weak SEC. It’s just a matter of Pope keeping us motivated. It would be a huge disappointment not winning the SEC.

Stop with the term “natty”, you sound retarded. Are you 5 years old?

Stackhouse is a terrible coach. Always seemed angry about something.

Vandy seems improved this season, but, honestly, we‘ll find out more now that conference play is starting.

That’s awesome. While both wins, those were the worst two games we’ve played by a wide margin. If that’s the only data you have, I could see where you’d think we stink lol.

Also, Tanner and Duke Miles are playing very well this year. Tanner as a sophomore is one of the better players in the country, just a menace defensively. Miles is showing out in Byington’s system. Both of those guys are perfect for what Byington wants to do on defense and offense.

When it ll shakes out, I believe there’s at least 6 or 7 teams this year that “could” win the conference. It’s that wide open. We’re still the best conference by a pretty wide margin but nowhere near what the SEC was last year, that was historic.
Vandy may be all that and then some, we just don’t really know because they haven’t played much, if any, high level competition.
Bama may be the favorite along with the Hogs.
I hate to say it , but Cal has a good, deep team that, surprisingly, can shoot. The thing is with him, he’ll likely lose a couple games that they should win cause he’s such a terrible coach. That’ll probably cost them the conference.
UK, with our myriad of “ifs”, could easily get hot and win the conference. As everyone here knows, it’s 100% all about Lowe. If he plays significant minutes the rest of the year and JQ is what he seems to be were a different animal than what we’ve looked like so far.
