He got a guy who is routinely courted by better jobs at both the pro and college level to come to Penn State. Flight sucked, but nailed the landing. His job is secure - pending some unforeseen disaster - for a while.

Isn’t Pennsylvania still a two party/all party consent state when it comes to recording conversations? Not that anyone will be pressing charges…..
3rd degree felony, In Pennsylvania it is a crime to intercept or record a telephone call or conversation unless all parties to the conversation consent. See 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 5703 (link is to the entire code, choose Title 18, Part II, Article F, Chapter 57, Subchapter B, and then the specific provision). Not that anything will come of it.

If Allar, it's weird that he would make a statement seemingly 'dissing' Franklin's approach to game prep (Allar implied the players were mentally exhausted by game time under Franklin) and then leak the audio. It was either him, or someone sitting very close to him. But the outcome is a total backfire for the player - whomever it was. Clear though that Allar (and likely others) were not so subtly lobbying for Smith to get the job.

I think the kids liked how he spoke, they are in favor of how he handled it

Yeah, I had issues with the entire audio that was leaked, but Kraft actually wasn't the main one. I don't like how he spoke and understand the sentiments that it reflects unprofessionally. That said, I feel like all coaches, GMs, Managers talk this way when addressing young athletes. It's bravado, machismo, it's meant to get them to feel open, that you are relatable. It's definitely awkward, like when an white guys try to speak a certain way in front of a black audience, politicians do this all the time and is so transparently effacing. That said, I didn't have issue with the context of what he said.....That they shouldn't be so insecure, that they have advantages, yes, Michigan are cheaters and people in Oregon are weird! Whatever. My bigger concern was just how coddled and insecure the players came across(wonder if that is a reflection of Franklin sort of infantilizing them). "Oh, we aren't like in a big city like other schools, wahhhh." Do IOWA and ILL players say that in struggle sessions? These guys are getting paid large sums of money to go to a wonderful institution that has so much going for it. I think that was what Kraft was trying to push back on....like come on guys, this is a wonderful football program and institution, it has a ton of built in advantages. I kind of think back to Deon Butler's "We are penn state, we aren't normal!" speech. I don't know if Franklin's constant bitching about the airport or facilities, or alignment shaped these guys to believe they had it rough or something. The whole meeting seemed like coddling to a large degree, sure the program can do better and should solicit the players insights, but it was sort of pathetic. It's hard to believe the AD has to pitch the school to the players. That leaked audio made it apparent the team needed new leadership at the coaching level. Someone proud to be at Penn State, someone that sees it as a truly special place, someone that gets back to instilling confidence in this team. I do think Campbell is the right type of personality to do it, and that confidence alone should translate into some better results against teams that these players clearly feel less than.

then why do we let them vote?

My polling place here in State College is the polling place for two precincts. Every time there are a lot of people over thirty who don’t know which line to get into because they are too lazy to bring their registration card and too dumb to find their house on the map hanging on the wall. About the only thing more depressing are the ‘choices’ on the ballots.

Did you hear Kraft on that recording?

It appears the desired leadership is not there.

You sound soft. Hell my grandmother's old quilting group was probably mentally tougher than you and some of those players.

You obviously have never held a flashlight for dad while he was fixing the car.

That's the problem with staying at a Holiday Inn Express :) JK

There is significantly more to the statute - which was written/amended very intentionally (Including expectation of privacy - which significantly muddies the waters. Bottom line: Is PSU/PK or anyone else going to pursue charges? I doubt it - for many reasons including the one above)

Of course, as it relates to PSU Athletics, the entire issue of "someone recorded/leaked the conversation" is irrelevant to the issues facing the Department (aside from, if one wants to go there, spotlighting another aspect of program disfunction). And nothing but noise.

Whoever released it, it appears that in the end it may have helped rebuild Kraft’s reputation. We all know he mishandled parts of the search process, but what was very much evident in that video is that he is totally committed to improving this football program.
The release was meant to do harm fortunately it backfired bigly. At this point judging from the people who broke who it was leaves little doubt. That person who has been implicated should release a public apology to the team Kraft and the fanbase then leave.

Why would Drew leak this, understanding the damage it would do to his NFL career? If he did, he would likely not get drafted at all, as NFL teams would not entertain him as a leader after doing so. It seems to me that this action does not line up in any manner with how he has carried himself over the last 4 years.

I think there can be a cost for standards and values.

I try not to obsess about how other programs are run and any advantages that gives them...it's a clean slate on game day-just ask the 1981 Pitt Panthers who had about a dozen first rounders that got punched in the mouth by us...it seems we've been on the opposite side of that scenario too many time recently.
I feel at this level 1 or 2 players on either side of the ball can make a difference, and many weren't in hte top 10, 100, or even 200 recruits...Greg Garrity during my time at Penn State and Allen Robinson a little later, with many in between.

I also would hope the Penn State leadership, coaches, and coaching candidates treat an opportunity to coach at Penn State as a destination and
not a stepping stone....eliminates a lot of college coaches
I think Franklin viewed it this way and initial impressions are that Campbell does too.

Toughness and steady improvement (even when and especially when the national title hopes have evaporated) ARE traditional values that should be remembered and exercised....I welcome a return to them, even with significant transfers or more than the 1-2 losses a year...me thinks the 2010 team needs to have a team meeting with this group,

Well said and I agree. Many here have said "you guys better get used to winning less games than you did under Franklin" and I'm inclined to be like...."so what." Of course winning is the outcome we all want, but you want people that want to be here, players that want to be here, and program that is proud and confident in itself. Like Campbell, I believe in process over results, results are downstream from a solid, winning culture. Not to say Franklin didn't have that at points and have a lot success too, I don't want to take that away, but it had clearly waned.

1). I have a problem with people who can’t form a sentence without an f bomb. I don’t have a problem with an occasional f bomb. Kraft gave the impression he was in the former category. F bombs have no effect when used in every sentence and indicate other problems with the speaker. Locker room setting is irrelevant.

2). The leaker is actually more subjective to me. One person’s leaker is another’s whistleblower. Did the leaker believe Kraft was out of control and was damaging PSU and the team beyond repair? Then he is a whistleblower to some. In fact, if he failed in getting Campbell, the consensus would be Kraft should have been fired when the leak occurred. Whistleblowers can be right or they can be toxic like some here believe. Kraft got Campbell so he succeeded. If he didn’t get Campbell, the leaker would have been heroic.

I have trouble remembering which line to get in on Election Day as well. Our polling spot is the location for two different districts. One is named for the road I live on but I can never remember if that’s our district or if it’s the other one because I overthink it, thinking it being named the same as my street is too easy. Either way, I’ve stood in the wrong line several times before.

Getting Campbell allowed Kraft to save face nationally, Campbell has a great publicity team. I hope Campbell does well, but if I had to place a wager, I say Terry Smith is HC on an interim level by year 4...

Undercutting an active hiring process is not heroic - this audio came out at the height of the sh*tstorm following Sitake’s failed offer; not after everything was settled. This was an attempt at sabotage and it backfired spectacularly - not only did Kraft get a top hire, he did it with this crap all over social media.

I struggle with this really mattering as much anymore. These are professionals working on a college campus, not student athletes. Just like the pros, there is a culture of toughness that can be built, but it is a different process when paying athletes. I don’t think Franklin was above average with this as a college coach, but became even more suspect in the new dynamic

"Oh, we aren't like in a big city like other schools, wahhhh."

Yeah, really. Sure as hell wish someone would have offered me a $50,000 car to cruise around Pennsylvania in during college. With NIL, they could probably make some kind of ad about riding a party bus back and forth to Pittsburgh or Philly all the time.

I'd rather they spent their free time chopping down trees and wrestling bears in the forest, but that's too old fashioned I guess. The point really is now with getting paid it's not like they're stranded on poverty island with a few slices of bread and a half jar of peanut butter.

Those are just unserious statements and allegations.

As for the "hiring process": PK could have come home with Arnold Slick from Turtle Crick as a new head coach, and most fans would have waived the flag and shook the pom-poms. Such is the nature of fandom. All fans "want to believe" - until they don't (which is sometimes a very short time interval :) )

The truth is that the process was either stuck in mud and/or running through a string of failures for weeks (months?) It did not help that - reportedly - a cadre of "Franklin Loyalists" were left in place with the keys to the kingdom - acting to "sabotage" ( :) ) the situation at PSU vav VT (And who was responsible for allowing THAT to happen?).
To the point that, reportedly, "others" had to intervene. Until eventually (which was always a fait accompli - does anyone think PSU was going to have no head coach for 2026?) - there was enough money waived in front of a coach willing to take the job.

And, all of this, leaves unaddressed the lead in:
The utter breakdown and disfunction within the athletic department/football program leadership dynamics that led to the (relative) disaster of a thought-to-be-promising season. Probably plenty of responsibility to go around to multiple parties on that front - but that's clearly what happened (over a period of many months). Some light was shed on some of those issues through the release of the "Lasch Papers" :) But that's an issue for another day.

FWIW: He, Campbell, may end up being a very successful coach at PSU, or he may not. And nothing in the "process" should be fairly thought to indicate Campbell's level of quality/competency. No rational person would pretend to foretell that future. Time will tell, as it always does in such matters.

It is what it is.

Personally, I don’t see plenty of blame to go around for this season’s failure. I place it directly at the head coach’s feet.
