Seems like the ISU AD just lets others do all the search for money outside what school allots ($20M)

It used to be quite high. Last time contract was negotiated it was dropped dramatically. Think it's around 4 or 5 million. Maybe nothing but does make you wonder.

A link I saw from last year had it at 29 million. If that’s changed, then he’ll probably bolt just like Campbell did.

This one says it's now $4M. Very doable for any big time program that wants him.

T.J. Otzelberger, the head coach for Iowa State men's basketball, signed a contract extension in December 2024 that will keep him with the team through June 30, 2032. The new agreement includes a base pay of $500,000, with another $3.5 million in "additional compensation," for a total of $4 million annually, effective January 1, 2025. If he leaves for another college or NBA coaching job, he would owe Iowa State a $4 million buyout.

Contract details

  • Term: Extended through the 2032 season.
  • Annual compensation: $4 million total, effective January 1, 2025.
    • Base pay: $500,000.
    • Additional compensation: $3.5 million, which covers other obligations like media appearances and fundraising events
      .
    • Buyout: If Otzelberger leaves for another college or NBA head coaching position, he owes Iowa State $4 million.

Yes it had been high until just recently as the poster showed above. I think Iowa State's in tough leverage spot. They can't really pay what Campbell and TJ are probably worth so they get a lower buyout. I think TJ loves Iowa State and would prefer to stay that but if Iowa State gets to be in a position where they're at a significant disadvantage like Campbell likely felt he could leave.

They can survive and complete longer in basketball.
