Big Z: Not sure if “very rarely” would be an accurate characterization. The all-time record is 77-60 Michigan St. I also looked up the record since 2015. It’s 8-5 Mich St. They certainly have won more than us, but we have had some good wins against them, too, which made us a better team. Of course, AI can be inaccurate. So, please lmk if I’m wrong.
A side note: the most emotional Iowa win against Mich St came after Chris Street’s passing at Mich St when we were behind by double digits and came back in the last few minutes and won. This was when Acie Earl had Chris’s number 40 shaved in the back of his head. I think we followed that win with one against Michigan at home.

I think your confusing "better team" with the fact that we won some of those games.(The better team doesn't always win for a variety of reasons). You could count the number of times we've had the better team on one hand, (at least during Frans tenure). Most years MSU starts at least top 10-15 in the NCAA and sometimes even higher and they always play a tough non conference schedule. They usually absorb some losses, but it hardens them for the B1G and March.

as i recall fran was usually masterful against msu. at this point iowa appears to have taken a couple steps forward in ooc but if bmac loses to msu it will mark a definite step back in a sense
Not really, imo. Not even close.

MSU is off to one of its best starts under Izzo, period.

The Spartans usually have 2 or 3 losses by this point in the season. Sure those losses are against top competition, but their still Ls.

They've already beaten Arkansas, Kentucky and North Carolina. All ranked teams.

If they beat Iowa tomorrow night and then Duke on Saturday, they will be 9-0 and will already have (at least) 5 Q1 wins just barely into December. Also this will (likely) be Izzo's last best chance at a run for another National Championship.

The top 3 in the B1G is seemingly unquestioned at this point, the first of December. Michigan 1, Purdue 2/3 and MSU 3/2. The race for that last double-bye seed in the BTT is up for grabs between Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and UCLA.

Appearances are currently stating that the B1G will be the toughest its been - in the upper half of the standings (top 8/9) - this year as its been in any of the recent while.

I’m not betting on a win but I am looking forward to the guys and how they compete. Remember this……it is not an Iowa leftover roster w a leftover coach. I look for us to compete and play hard. If I see that I’m cool

Hopefully MSU is thinking more about their game with Duke on Saturday :)
This. Very well could happen too
Hawks have no pressure on them.
Just go in and compete. See what happens.
I just want to see them make MSU extremely uncomfortable. A win would be icing on the cake but I'm looking for just the change in culture at this point. Defense and rebounding. Make Izzo squirm a bit

2013 BTT I think. That loss kept us out of the NCAAs.
Was that the year that Steve Kerr was one of the analysts on the CBS broadcast and he had no problem calling out the shiddy officiating and how it was only benefiting MSU?

I don't remember the exact year it was - pretty sure it was while Alfraud was still the coach - but it was a BTT semi game vs MSU that Iowa needed to make it into the Big Dance, and the officiating was almost the sole reason the Hawks lost. And Kerr was pissed about how bad the officiating was.

The Hawkeyes are 20-47 all-time in East Lansing, but Iowa has won two of the last three games at the Breslin Center. Iowa won 88-58 on Feb. 13, 2021, fell 63-61 in 2023 and was victorious, 78-71, in its last game in East Lansing on Feb. 20, 2024

Tuesday is going to be a battle as both teams want to control tempo and grind you down.

I like the hawks 73-69

You can’t argue about his competitive demeanor or “it is what it is” let’s go.
Ben makes good halftime adjustments. He and his staff closely observe which players are effective, but also recognize what others can bring to the rest of the game. It's a pretty generic description by me, but he just makes things happen after one half of play.

I hear you. But “better team” is a pretty subjective measure, no? This is why we play the game. I’d rather win than be perceived as a better team. Still, I know what you mean. And we have lost more games against them than we have won. And the way they beat NC, I won’t be too heartbroken if we lost. Cheers!

Instantly angry, simply unbelievable...somebody was on the take that day, 2004 Outback bowl and this game the most horrendous officiating I've ever witnessed during an Iowa game.
2011 game at the McLeod center was worse than 2013 vs MSU. That game was on par with the Outback Bowl. Johnny Moran constantly flailing & falling down & getting rewarded.

I expect them to compete like hell and show toughness.

I equate this years Iowa BB team to that year two KF FB team that went 3-9. By the end of the year you could tell other FB teams didn't want to play Iowa. I think we will see this tonight with the MBB team. We are going to lose some games but the top teams in the league are not going to want to play us anymore.

I sure hope this team doesn’t equate to a 3-9 football team when it’s said and done.

To win, but my guess is the officials get ticky tack with Iowa's D.
That's always the fear @ Izzo land. Besides being good to great, MSU is tough when it's always 8 on 5. If it starts out that way, I suggest Ben collect his first T of the year, and get it early. I'm pretty sick and tired of the Izzo BS. If they let Iowa play its game, I'll take the Hawkeyes in this one. Ben didn't come to Iowa City just to show up. Give his team the fair chance they deserve and let's see how Izzo's boys handle it.

It will be refreshing to have a coach that maybe won't alienate the entire BIG10 referee circle. Fran's behavior cost us some calls through the years.

I watched Ben's introductory press conference and my favorite part came when he talked about developing a warrior mentality. I also noticed that Izzo's comments about the game seemed rather cool. He has coached a long time and knows the score. He knows his team will have to really work at both ends to prevail against a McCollum coached team. I love it!

This is a fact. Some posters thought the Fran stare down was cool. Couldn't be a stupider thing to do then trying to show up a ref over a call. They have their own community and Fran crossed their line more then once.

Yep

And they are all human and prone to bias regardless of what they will say publicly. Not only was it childish over and over, it was cost us games.

I don't recall the exact year, but in the game you're talking about it felt like MSU was allowed to flat-out tackle Iowa players without a whistle. Meanwhile Iowa kept getting hit with phantom calls on the defensive end. It was one of the most maddening games I've ever watched. For a moment I honestly questioned whether I should even bother watching college basketball if refs were going to be that biased or look like they were on the take.

Was worried a Drake 2.0 rosters not going to work in the BIG. Fears came true last night
Fears did come thru for MSU,nice pun.
Ben is coming into the strongest BIG in recent memory.
The money is mattering now, and the BIG is flush.

If Ben can win 10 BIG games...COY candidate.
