I questioned him extremely hard for choosing to go with Sims at QB, who led D1 in turnovers as I recall. Losing to Iowa last year nearly broke me… then there was Michigan and Minnesota this year that were absolute showcases that we aren’t built or coached like a B1G program. It wasn’t until he received his extension that I completely gave up on the near future of NU football and stopped watching closely and prioritizing it as part of my Saturday routine.

Don’t know that Iowa’s # of Caucasian players on the starting units are that much higher than other teams? On offense…running backs are all black and wide receiver corps is mainly black. Many teams QB’s, o-lineman, and tight ends are white, as are Iowa’s this year. On defense, 3 of the 4 main defensive backs are black, linebackers are a mix of white and black. While the starting d-line is white…several African Americans rotate in. I don’t care what color a player is as long as they hustle, have a high motor, hit hard, and play smart.
I wasn’t the one stating that. I was replying to the poster who did.

Oh let's see. Jeff Sims, The retention of Donnie the retard so we could land a 5 star cosplayer, Foley, satterfield, Dana, Butler. The dude knows nothing about on the field talent or coaching talent.

Agree that getting fired from the NFL is different but you if you were on the moon, you could still tell there is a big difference between Matt and Saban.
I agree. But Nebraska fans are no judge of the actual standing this program has in the general scheme of things. Every single hire that has been made since Osborne has been problematic in one way or another. Each time with a different A.D. And each time, the A.D. is just so frinken relieved to be done with it all. My point is Rhule had his detractors but apparently he was the best option available give the very narrow hiring criteria for coaching candidates NU operates with.

Strike 1: Jeff Sims
Strike 2: Indiana last year
Strike 3: Minnesota this year

I honestly tried, but Rhule is a loser.
Who would you hire to replace Rhule? Honestly, if King Kong isn't Rhule's replacement, I will be highly disappointed. With King Kong's expertise, we will be playoff bound in no time.

I would argue that 6-6 KSU coach has at least won the big XII. The baylor coach would have been a terrible hire. Lance i'm mixed on. He made KU better but they are still struggling getting bowl eligible this many years in. Not sure though how much investment that the administration is willing to make on their football team in the NIL era though.
I've been saying for a while now that recent success is way overrated and it limits the candidate pool. It's odd to me that a coach who went 6-6 and then 10-2 is a great candidate while a guy who went 10-2 and then 6-6 is not even a candidate at a place like NU.

Go get an up and coming coordinator of a top 20 team. Specifically someone who will build strong O and D lines. They do this thing called “interviews” where the AD will “interview” several guys and decide who has the best plan.
If you listen to any media types who are apparently in the know, prior P4 head coaching experience is a requirement. And as we all know, that candidate must be coming off a great season AND be interested in the Husker job over all of the other "great" jobs out there. Then there's the fact that the outside perception is that Nebraska a tough place to coach given the high expectations and an extremely frustrated fan base.

With that criteria, that eliminates a lot of great candidates such as what you are mentioning in your post!

I mean, obviously the concern there is that 10-2 to 6-6 can be a trend in the wrong direct. Whereas 6-6 to 10-2 can be a trend in the right direction. So, although maybe not a be all end all indicator, it's not hard to see why people value that trend in the right direction.

Well said. But that also speaks toward perception and appeasement of the fan base. But there's also the philosophy that a coach doesn't just get dumber in one season. Key Injuries, a kicker misses a couple field goals. I think it's just as easy for a very good coach to go 6-6 as an average coach fall *** backwards into one 10-2.

One example that comes to mind is Mike Elko- he got worse at Duke and still got hired at Texas A&M coming off a 7-5 season. Now, he was a popular DC at A&M otherwise he wouldn't have gotten the job. But still, going 7-5 and moving up is an exception.

Therein might lie the problem. We have to have an administration and an AD with the intestinal fortitude to forge a unique path. To me, it seems the criteria they look at when choosing the coach is so superficial. It’s not exactly a perfect science, but there has to be certain characteristics present within the best coaches that are undeniable, whether they are established or relatively unknown up-and-coming. Nebraska fans are at fault for insisting that their coaches be likable and approachable like a neighbor. In reality, we needed a Bo Pelini type, but someone willing to accept help where weak, such as recruiting and seeking out innovation.

I have no idea. Im not being paid millions and granted access to essentially infinite resources to identify, evaluate, pursue, and acquire a coach. Dannen is, and he ****** it up with that extension.

The NU fanbase has a manic desire to have instant results and a coach that is as holy as the pope. Someone like Urban Meyer is out of the question. And they ought to have ties to the old regime or at least worship it. People on here hated Cignetti for the Google comment. It's nauseating.

The coaches we were rumored to be talking with along with Rhule.....5-7 Kansas coach ...5-7 Baylor's coach ...and 6-6 Kansas State coach ....no matter what, we would have ended up 7-5 or worse no matter who we hired....we were drawing from a bag of mid level coaches
The 6-6 K State coach is 126-47 and had a very rare off year. I would take that in a heart beat.

When we ended up with the defensive line that we have this year. I just thought, if having quality Defensive tackles isn’t a priority, he either doesn’t know what he’s doing, or he doesn’t have the recruiting ability we need. I don’t think he has good recruiting assistants and it’s going to bury him. Hope Im wrong.
Battle ready DTs are very tough to get in the portal and the best class we’ve had are freshmen. They WERE a priority in the portal.

Somewhere along the lines of the Harberg/Sims experiment. That was embarrassingly bad judgment.
We would need to move back to the B12. KSU isn’t playing near the schedule we are even with how soft our schedule was this year IMO.

I did a little more work on Matt's vaunted 2019 season at Baylor. The famous "3rd Season". Please excuse me if this has already been reported. Baylor went 11-3 that season. Only played two teams that were ranked and losing all three times. Oklahoma, twice, once in the regular season and then in the Big 12 Championship and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The 11 teams Baylor beat that year had a combined record of 58-78 with only 4 teams having a winning record that year. Iowa State (7-6), Kansas State (8-5), Oklahoma State (8-5) and Texas (8-5). The Big 12 was down that year.

Someone in another thread said something about knowing when he hired the teenager as our WR coach that he wasn't cut out for this job.

For me, it was when he was dancing with the team during the opening kickoff in his skinny jeans and extra medium adidas aeroready shirt. Can you imagine TO or Saban doing that?

So, what was your moment? Not when you suspected it, but the breaking point of actually knowing it.
I don't think he is a bad asset to the football program, but he'd be a better general manager than a HC. He is a great public speaker and get kids and fans excited. However when it comes to time management and the general X's and O's he is a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I honestly think he is a positive for player relations, but a burden to getting Nebraska to the place where we want to be and that is competing at the highest level for a complete season.

When Rhule hired Satterfield as OC and Garret McGuire as WR coach, I knew he was in over his head - hiring his buddies instead of getting the best coaches possible.

Ummm. So he beat ISU, an 8 win KSU team, 8 win OSU, 8 win Texas? Sounds pretty good to me.

I think it was year one against Iowa. It's like 4th and long and he lines the team up for a 60 or so yard FG with our crappy kicker. He says he was going to run a fake FG. WFT? Luckily we get a delay of game and punt it and pin Iowa deep. I think Iowa makes a big play and gets out of bad field position. We lose the game.

Not ready to say he isn't the coach for us.

He has given us back to back winning seasons. Been a while since we've been able to say that.

He also seems to be willing to remove his weak links ion his coaching staff.

A solid run defense gives us 3 more wins this year.

Time will tell,.

The problem with this is. He needed Akron and HCU on the schedule to get bowl eligible. And seems to make changes? Sure…, The issuue with this is who he is hiring in the first place. Initial hires. White was his best hire. Satterfield, Foley and the child WR coach were WTF hires.

Donavan Raiola getting a 3rd year was a joke and then promoting Butler to DC was a horrible decision. And as of right now it appears Butler is the scapegoat. And Donavan so still has a job.

Something about this always bothered me. Rhules gotten soft, no toughness left. Instead of joining in the celebration of a huge play he acts like a woman and says "don't touch me"

Matt Rhule reminds me of girls that date guys who have multiple red flags with a long history of cheating on women thinking they will be the one that can change them. I swear Rhule looks at some coaches and players and says I'm the exception and can change them. Then when it comes to great players like EJ or great coaches, he doesn't like them because they don't need to be changed, they just need to be given a chance and there is no fun in that. It takes several other people to finally make him realize his bad decisions. At least he does listen and corrects some mistakes but at the cost of wasting a year or more to finally correct them.

This could all be true.

Butler was not a bad hire. His defense was better than Tony Whites was this year. The truth of the defense is that we lost The entire Dline including Two studs in the middle.

They masked alot of problems last year.

In regards to scheduling, scheduling cupcakes is part of CFB. Everyone does it and if it gets us to a bowl game then I'm okay with it.

Donovan isnt doing a terrible job coaching. The issue to me is in recruiting. Our run offense was pretty good this year if I recall.

Our passing game struggled more due to play calling. Quicker faster throws plus Dylan not holding on to the ball for so long would have been better. At least to me.

Everyone makes a bad hire. I just had to let go of two people today that I hired. Its not what we want but it also is part of what we all have to do.

Its good that he is replacing non performers.

Time will tell if the replacements do better

It's a culmination of everything. The Year 2 November streak was pretty bad. And Year 3 after Cincinatti, I wasn't impressed with the performance and the kind of jump that should be expected in Year 3. Also starting in Year 1 with the straight boneheaded coaching decisions that costed us multiple close games.

It should be grounds to fire the AD. Seriously. That’s just an outrageous amount. I think the LSU AD was forced to step down for this very reason.

I’d be okay with the AD’s boss being fired, too.
Dannen really doesn't get enough hate, and with that contract extension, it's clear his pick was Rhule. If he gets that wrong, there's no way he deserves another chance. Also not thrilled that he didn't just cancel the retarded stadium project outright instead of following in Benedict Alberts footsteps in supporting the project when at a time when all available funds should be directed at NIL.

LL would have been great just because he likely has higher highs and lower lows than Matt Rhule. And thus we may have enjoyed greater single season success at one point, and also a low point representing an opportunity to fire the guy. I'd take that over being stuck in 5-7 win purgatory with Matt Rhule.

Correct he has a little Franklin in him in that for every great season he'll have some stinkers in there.
