So what is this team's ceiling?

You aren't very smart either. Lets look at similar type opponents and minutes moron.

UNI - Olson 38 minutes - 4 turnovers Wright 29 minutes 4 Turnovers
Drake Olsen 38 minutes 2 turnovers Wright 27 minutes 1 Turnovers

By stats they are almost equivalent. By eye test most would take Chazadi over Olsen on ballhandling - but if you want to die on that hill be my guest. You can go post 3 more times inflating your post count too if you wish trying to make your point.

I am not sure you want to talk about excessive posting on a topic. Afterall, you are the one who posted THIRTY-FOUR times in a thread whining about how there would never be a board dedicated to women's hoops on here.

And the fact you think last year's UNI team and this year's Drake team are comparable says a great deal about your basketball knowledge.

Blah Blah Blah - Legend - my point on the Basketball forum was a fundamental argument. My basis was it didn't appear they wanted a womens forum and it made no sense to not have a womens forum if they were bringing all the posts over here. This was my biggest argument. I am appreciative that they made a forum. As to what Kakert said was going to happen in the transition a lot of what he said and promised never occurred. Case in point - no posts from the old site transitions over here. 2ndly I didn't appreciate the threat of him nuking the free boards- stating that is what the owners wanted and thats the direction the boards were moving to. It made no sense to purchase a group of boards only to get rid of a large chunk of the posters. But if you want to continue to argue on Kakerts behalf again be my guest.

You also have pretty big balls talking about posting when you have 7400 posts (edit for Legends point he has only had these many posts over 3 years- not 74k posts although I am sure he would be well over 100k if the other forums post totals were included). As to UNI and Drake, the players may have changed - maybe the skill level somewhat but those are the closest apples to apples comparison we have Legend. You seem to be making extremely silly arguments, but that is par for the course with you and has been the case for the last 20 years.

I have 24,000 posts?

Read the wrong line - 7400 over 3 years. holy **** what a line to stand on. I am still posting at a ridiculous amount, just not as ridiculous as the first number. Averaging over 7 posts a day. Quite an accomplishment for you legend. How many posts would it be with the other site included - nearing 100k?

Also nice brush away of all the other points I made. What a standup poster. Idiots like you always deflect and point out the minor error when the majority of the argument is legit.

Kakert promised all the posts coming over hear in 2 weeks, would love to hear your input why they never transitioned over here. It goes by my point it didn't appear we could trust everything that he was saying.

??? Until we play a team that decides to defend her, and then no.........She's still way to one dimensional on offense. She has worked on her defense, and on being a loose ball rebounder.
He said shooter, McCabe is a shooter. We weren't discussing any of the other bs you spouted about.

Aren't we? So what good is a "shooter" who can't get her shot off unless she's wide open when they play teams who defend her as PURELY a three point specialist. There have been lots of conference games where teams took her away from the offense, and if you can't "create" your own shot, (which she can't), you can be removed as a factor.

Don’t think we need to downplay Lucy to praise Chit Chat, she just played a full season in the W as 2nd round pick after all.

It was always going to be tough to replace the elite guard play we’re used to, but Chat has been great so far. Once the competition/size ratchets up hopefully her quickness allows her to continue at the rate she’s been playing at.

Yes, she is. But we were talking about a shooter. Someone who was going to provide SCORING from the perimeter. Maybe this year will be different, but honestly I don't think when we get into the meat of the schedule we'll be getting numbers from McCabe much different then previous year. Probably a few because she's going to play a few more minutes/gm, but I wouldn't be counting on her to give us double figure scoring for an average. I think its imperative that we get real growth from Deal/Erod. Certainly Stremlow has made strides, but we need another guard who can score.

I agree if they make S16 it would be a very good year. Watche UConn and Michigan and they appear to be at a higher level than Hawks. JMO
There's no such thing as not belonging to the top 8. The 2018-2019 team with Gustafson was in the Elite 8 and then lost to Baylor by 30 points. Being in the top 8 doesn't mean they have to be toe-to-toe with the best of the best.

And we shouldn't be too discouraged if Iowa loses big against UConn this year. The 2022-2023 team that made to the NCAA final lost by about 30 points at Maryland.

I think they could get as high as Sweet 16. They don’t belong in the top 8 this year. Just my opinion of course.
That is where I think they can get but it won't be easy. Elite eight maybe next year, the hopefully a final four. Currently the team doesn't have that go to player to get you a tough bucket or creative assist.

I think that CCW, when she comes back, along with Stremlow and McCabe can provide the outside shooting that the Hawks need. The team's obvious strength is inside with Heiden and Stuelke and they will both often attract double teams that will allow for open 3's if those girls make good decisions to find open shooters when the opportunity arises.

Lucy's TO% last year was 15.1%
Chit Chat's TO% this year is 16.4%
1 statistic you have seen is slightly in Lucy’s favor. The assist to turnover ratio and rest of the statistics on turnovers and just the eyeball test tells you Chit Chat is the better point guard and has better handles. Which was my initial point. That is not a negative at all to Lucy- she was more of a scoring combo guard playing point for us and was the leader we needed last year.

Par for the course pick a fight then run away when he is shown he is wrong. He is wrong on the Chit Chat and Lucy debate and he is incredibly stupid trying to argue UNI and Drake are not comparable- they are the same schools we played last year. They may not be exactly the same or quite as good, but they are in the same ballpark.

Let’s get this thread back on topic. Going back to my initial post, you saw Deal show some of her offensive potential. McCabe shot very well and the biggest thing I have been pushing for is just to create a shot more than just spot up shooter. Her last 3 pointer she use a screen from I believe Hays.

I'm beginning to wonder if this is a Final Four caliber team by the end of the year. I don't see a glaring weakness. They've already got great chemistry and considering the number of freshmen and sophomores playing you would expect that to only improve over the course of the season.

My biggest concerns are:

1) FT shooting - it's been horrible all season and will possibly be the cause of a close game loss.

2) 3 point shooting - can they get points consistently from anyone not named McCabe?

Yeah, those are two big issues. Sadly, the team is without Emely, Teagan, and (i imagine) Chit-Chat, so they don't really have the horses to compete with the best teams. A loss at ISU will be really telling, will probably cool any jets imagining this team overperforming in March.

A lot depends on those returning players elevating the team, and continued improvement from the freshmen. If they can leverage the depth, they have a chance against teams. Free throws will matter. Concentrating at the rim will matter. Chit-Chat hitting threes and opening the court will matter.

Steulke and Feuerbach have to lead this team.
If neither can contribute offensively, then KF defending and Hannah rebounding must happen.

Both have been EXTREMELY inconsistent.

The ceiling - Final Four. The Floor winning the first round of the tournament. Most likely getting to the sweet 16.

We just beat 2 really solid teams without most likely our 2nd best player for the entirety of 1 game and the majority of another. Chit Chat can create her own shot - facilitate get in the lane - provide 3 point shooting (probably our 2nd best 3 point shooter right now). She would have been a major difference maker in that final 8 minutes when they began to double the post. My biggest worry was we would fall apart against a team with strong defensive effort without Chit Chat. Honestly Stremlow played incredibly well filling in for her.

We have 6 solid players within our system - Heiden, Chit Chat, Stuelke, McCabe, Stremlow and Kylie.

The ceiling depends on 3 bench players and 1 starter-

1. Hays - against elite or very good C's Hays is still a work in progress. No different than Heiden last year. Her limitations show up and just lack of experience. We have seen she can score and has moves against lower competition. That is good. It shows she has the skills to continue to develop into an a very good or elite C at this level. She just needs to continue to work at it.

2. Rodriguez - Watching her is like being on a roller coaster. Here is my take - outside of maybe Heiden she has a higher ceiling than anyone else on the court. Her BB IQ however is poor. She has an outside shot, she has excellent handles, and she can dribble drive at will. She can become a ball hog, she doesn't give consistent effort on defense and rebounding (but has the ability) and gets herself into trouble by being out of control. All correctable things. Assuming you can keep her motivated, she will be a key cog potentially by the end of the year and most certainly in the next 2.

3. Deal - You could put Mallegni or Houston - but they are a tad repetitive and neutralize each other. We have enough depth at the post positions. We could utilize more depth at the guard position and beyond McCabe - in my limited viewing she has the best stroke from 3. She does not have the quickness currently. The defense has improved some since the initial game and she does not appear to be as out of control as she was the initial games. She has figured out something that works with driving to the lane. Personally I would scrap the euro step for now and re-implement and just drive to the lane hard. Try to get a foul and go with it. She is willing to create her shot and has more potential at finishing than Kylie or McCabe. She can still be an extremely good offensive threat and passer. The defense has to be passable.

Starter - McCabe - McCabe has been our 3rd best player this season in my opinion. the defense - good shooting (not great for her), decent handles, clutch plays and willing to drive more. I really want McCabe to become more aggressive on the offensive end. The last 2 games I have see 3 drives to the lane. She needs to continue to do this. I still want her to work on a mid range game and some 1 on 1 game of some sort. If she can become a poor mans Lucy Olsen - this teams ceiling jumps quite a bit. There have been very few mistakes from her this year and she is showing more leadership and confidence.

You need 1 of McCabe or Deal to really blossom as an offensive threat to balance this team to reach its potential in my opinion. The ceiling is still incredibly high. You do need Chit Chat to get healthy and remain healthy but that goes without saying.
I believe with our youth, we are going to a lot better end of year. As far as another poster saying last years team was better? I believe objectively false. This years team is gonna be a lot better. The addition of Chat, Addie, Rodriguez and Houston are all very positive. The maturation of stremow, Heiden and Heiden are very positive too. We will will get an pretty good indication soon against ISU but out out ceiling in elite 8 at least

I'm gonna have to kind of disagree with you there Hanna and Kylie are not the leaders of the team this year. Ava is a superstar in the making and can dominate games. Hannah is an effective role player inside. On the outside it's Stremlow, and Chit Chat when healthy. Kylie is a good defender but she's not going to beat anyone. I thought Levin looked fantastic yesterday.

FT shooting has been a problem, but it's been isolated pretty much to Hannah and Hays who has been awful (1-6 vs Rutgers). Hays hopefully won't get extended minutes in more competitive games.

Iowa has 3 good 3 point shooters in Wright, McCabe, and Stremlow. Deal has recently shown she can knock some down as well.

Iowa as a team is ranked #259, so I don't think it's only due to a couple of players...

The team percentage ranking is bad, but the individual stats are readily available for everyone to see. Hannah and Hays have taken 31% of the foul shots and are shooting 58% and 44% respectively. Remove their stats and the team percentage jumps 7 points and their ranking jumps over 160 points. Ava shoots the most free throws and hasn't been great either at 69%, but she's been much better than those 2, particularly Hays.

As the main point of internet message boards is to quibble / nit pick I will point out the jumping from 259 to somewhere around 100 still ain't great. ISU is ranked #14. Throw out Crooks and Hare and they're probably #1.

Yeah. She could definitely improve. They all could, but she's hovering close to 70% and her EFG% is 63%. Hanna and Hayes are just really really bad at 58% and 44% respectively.

I believe the ceiling of this team depends on Heiden staying on the floor. Her great strength of aggressiveness is also a problem—foul trouble. If Ava can stay on the floor for close to 30 minutes the ceiling can be elite 8 or at least sweet 16. If not we are a totally different team.

Ceiling getting lower as non-conference season progresses. E-Rod status, Deal slow start, lingering Chit Chat health issues, Mallegni’s star-crossed start are all pretty big negatives. Relatively easy early conference slate can hopefully be used to jump start Hawks and put them on an upward trajectory.
