MANHATTAN — Kansas State football coach Chris Klieman said he doesn't regret his emotional postgame press conference following the Wildcats' 51-47 loss at No. 12 Utah this past weekend, when he was asked about it at his weekly media availability on Monday, Nov. 24.
Klieman broke down during a three-minute opening statement, calling out those calling for new leadership and new players. The seventh-year coach said he was "tired of it" and believed he deserved more respect.
What Klieman was specifically talking about was unclear, though a vocal portion of the fanbase has expressed displeasure with the Wildcats' season, given that they were picked by many to compete for a Big 12 title.
"I care for the kids, and I'm not going to apologize," Klieman said Monday. "I care for our guys, and I'm gonna always have their back."
Klieman's breakdown was well-circulated after it was picked up by USA TODAY, ESPN, and The Athletic. After his opening statement, Klieman sat back to collect himself and was hugged by K-State athletic director Gene Taylor, who told the coach that he wasn't going anywhere and that the school had his back.
Klieman's players also have his back. His words were hard to avoid, and the Wildcats expressed their love for their head coach during their availability on Monday after seeing the video.
"That's just the guy that Coach Klieman is," K-State captain Damian Ilalio said. "Some people call him emotional, and some people have theories on who he is as a person, but I'll be the first to tell you that he just dedicates everything he is into this game and this team. He's always working; he never gets a break, and then when he does get a break, there are times he's still out there raising money for us.
"Coach Klieman cares so much for everybody on this team, whether you're a janitor, a starter, a freshman or a nutritionist; everybody is important to him. He's very passionate and loves this football team. I already knew all this stuff. He's an amazing guy, an amazing person and I expect nothing less."
K-State running back Joe Jackson, who broke Darren Sproles' single-game school record by rushing for 293 yards against Utah, echoed the same sentiment.
"Man, Coach Klieman, I love him to death," Jackson said. "He gives us everything he has, and like he said, he deserves a lot more respect. He puts his heart and soul into us every single day and just shows how much he cares for us. Even though this season hasn't gone how we wanted, he continues to show up every single day with his best. That's why you see some emotion; he just cares so much."
Klieman began his presser on Monday, repeating that the Wildcats' loss to Utah was among the best efforts that he's been a part of.
The Wildcats gained 574 yards of offense against the Utes, with a program-record 472 coming on the ground. Utah erased a 12-point deficit in the final seven minutes, with Devon Dampier running in a one-yard touchdown with 56 seconds left for the game-winner.
The emotion of a close loss to one of the nation's best teams, combined with the season's disappointment and the noise around the program, led Klieman to break down.
Offensive lineman Andrew Leingang is off social media, but he didn't need to see the press conference to put his support behind his coach.
"I'd die and kill for that guy," Leingang said. "I think he has our locker room in great shape. I think if you asked any of these guys around here that have been around Coach Klieman, I think they'd always answer the same way. I'm so blessed to have him as a part of my life."

Yep, Beth better not extend Kirk's time or I should say I sure hope she doesnt. KF has been very successful at Iowa but no titles in 20 years, no Natty Champs or even playoffs. He has a sound winning percentage but not 80+% like the greats.

IUP, Elon, and James Madison... IUP's current head coach is 61-19 (.763) Div. II Cignetti was there 5 years. Elon-Cignetti spent 1 year. Elon is a .500 team on average and went to the playoffs in Cignettis 1 year with the program. Lost first round to powerhouse program Furman. Curt Cignetti took over at James Madison with the most successful class of seniors ever. They were ranked preseason #1 along with NDS Bison. They lost the championship to the Bison. He successfully moved the program to the FBS in the Sun Belt conference. Cignetti was 52-9 at James Madison but inherited a program that was very stable and had won an FCS National Championship under Mike Houston in 2016. Mike Houston was 8-0 his two years prior to Cignetti.
Long story short, each and every time someone mentions NIL and Indiana you blast about the greatness of Cignetti and his crazy successful coaching. He is a good coach. His time at James Madison started with inheriting the most successful senior class ever. The program was up and running before Cignetti and still is after.
Indiana is built with a good coach and NIL from several very big money donors. Stop with the anointing of Cignetti until the money goes or stays and he goes or stays. The question is can he keep Indiana at this level without the money or can Indiana keep winning with the money without him.

Their win on the road against Oregon was impressive to say the least.
But, being on the ropes against the Hawks and PSU shows they are far from unbeatable.
Because of his attitude and personality, I have no doubt he will get a lot of Big coaches best shots. Bielema is probably already preparing for the next time they meet.

Well that would explain for the teams bad perfromance last Saturday if they knew about it or were sidetracked by rumors.
He usually bitches about getting one with four years left so we'll see if he tries again.
I doubt OC poster has credibility on the subject, but I don't that the Kirk buyout is insurmountable. I do believe they had a huge hand in getting Brian out (Kirk would've kept him OC, just believe it), and I don't think the buyout would scare them off as well. The donors may love Kirk but, hopefully, they know that Kirk is not the Iowa program.
I couldn't give two ***** about basketball, let alone Iowa basketball, but I was intrigued by the Men's BB search to see how it was handled by Beth. Fran didn't have to be let go, but Beth made the best decision for the program after it hit its plataeu. We'll see if it works out but it did tell me that she most likely feels the same on Kirk.
I think we let Kirk decide because of all the equity he built up and I think Beth wants to keep this type of culture in place. Firing Kirk would hurt that imo. As much as I want him gone, he will be here for a couple more years unless something drastic changes.

My take on Cignetti and his arrogance probably has to do with being overlooked and under appreciated his entire career. I’m sure the amount of validation he’s getting from his run at Indiana has to be incredibly intoxicating. I don’t know that I can blame him for anything he’s said or done that I’ve seen or heard.
Nope. If it was that widely known it would be everywhere. A hundred 18-23 year-olds will spread news pretty fast. It would be all over social media.

You don't know what deal would be made to have him announce his retirement at the end of 2025 instead of having him coach another 4-5 years.
I have thought for awhile that Kirk would leave based on an agreement made between him and Beth behind the scenes. Beth won't allow big donors to just push Kirk out the door. But we may have more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye. Right now we don't know enough to draw any realistic conclusions.

What Beth can't afford to do is allow this to drag out to a point where are recruiting suffers because there will eventually be a change and then the new coach is saddled with trying to restock quickly. Certainly easier now IF the money is there to do it with. I am just not convinced we have the money to rebuild quickly. Last few years of Fry plus the first few years of Kirk was very painful...would rather not go thru that again. Needs to be a discussion on the time table to make sure KF knows he is not being run off but rather doing the right thing for the program and come to terms with a "non firing" lower buyout number. If KF doesn't agree to that type of transition then I guess he really doesn't care THAT much about the program's transition. I am going to assume he has enough money to live on for a few lifetimes.

I agree with your strong feeling. KF will not coach Iowa in perpetuity. On that I believe everyone can agree, even those who wish KF were immortal and could, indeed, coach the Hawkeyes until the end of time.
It makes sense that one more year, when Kirk will be 71 and in his 28th year as HC, would be the time.
Sound familiar? It's not just KF. Most players say these kinds of things about their HC. It's just SOP.
