This will improve significantly by next week then even more after we play K State and RU

365 (last) = Seton Hall
As I mentioned elsewhere, it’s not like either team is playing a new set of opponents from the past. It’s that the quality of hoops in this area has gone way downhill. Is Rider even going to be open in a few years, on the heels of what St Francis did a few years ago? The decline is not just a trend. It’s a full-fledged thing.

Our non-conference schedule as a whole is solid -- certainly not spectacular -- but the opening half is very soft. At least four, and maybe five, of the last six games will be more challenging.

St. Peter's 1-3
Wagner 0-4
Fairfield 3-2
Monmouth 1-3
New Haven 2-4

NC State 4-0
USC 3-0 or Boise State 4-1
Arizona State 3-1/Texas 4-1/Washington State 2-3/Chaminade

Central Connecticut 2-2
Kansas State 4-0
Rutgers 4-0

Still so early. Will improve over the next couple of weeks. I d rather be 5-0 with this schedule than having a 2-3 record with one or two devastating losses.
Coming off last year, you might be right. In a different year, not so sure. There is so much value to playing really good teams in the OOC. The losses don’t hurt you and the experience and preparation no doubt helps. And of course for our fan base: if we were 3-2 with losses to good high majors, I wouldn’t view this team any differently right now. And I might even view us more positively.

However, as Hall87 points out, the OOC in its entirety is solid. We just happened to start out with the five weakest opponents. Starting Monday we should have enough good opponents to get us ready for the BE. Actually pretty interested to see how it turns out.

Well we got screwed when we played a challenging OOC a few years ago so might as well build some confidence & have some fun. Losing to Monmouth, Hofstra & Fordham last year was the pits.

Good points about a normal year, but Seton Hall is in a Rebuild/Reload. The Program is still adjusting to the new normal of the NIL. We just can't afford too many losses in the OOC . The fanbase got Nuked by the devastating inexcusable losses last season.

I think it has the potential to be overall OK, but correct me if I’m wrong, part of that will be dictated by whether we can beat NC State and who else we see in Maui. It’s a good thing though the schedule worked out where we got NC State first.

Who knows how the seasons will shake out for the other teams…. Anyone’s guess, really.

We shouldve done this last year too. Not the year before though when we had post-season expectations.

True. Last year if you had Kansas St and Indiana early we probably thought those would be monster OOC games and they were some of the NIL rich teams that floundered.

That schedule wasn't appreciably more difficult than this year's will be. NET rankings in parenthesis.

St. Peter's (188)
FDU (324)
Albany (250)
Wagner (290)
USC (N) (88) - L
Iowa (N) (62) - L
Northeastern (244)
@ Baylor (15) - L
Rutgers (103) - L
Monmouth (193)
Missouri (N) (158)

We didn't "get screwed when we played a challenging OOC a few years ago" (sic). We were passed over because we didn't beat anyone good during our OOC. That's a fate this year's team potentially faces although it would be a surprise if we're on the bubble in mid-March.

I have little to no issues with the schedule this year. It was smart and strategic to schedule softly in the beginning. I didn’t like 3 games at Walsh and would’ve preferred one more decent home game (Temple, VCU, St Joes)

The 3 Walsh games are more due to the devils/concerts than shu. The would’ve preferred another decent home game, but I’m fine with the schedule. I actually think it’s better than most people do

Kansas St beat Miss St easily on a neutral court.

Potential opponent USC beat Troy in 3 OT. Crazy ending

The schedule is an embarrassment - and a huge mistake in the world of pay for play - but I understand why they did it. Last year was so jarringly bad that they needed some wins to feel better again.

Hopefully it’s just a one off thing.

what’s so bad about it?
A big ten team at home.
A big 12 team on the road.
A decent tournament. A top 25 team in the first game. As long as you don’t get Chaminade. You’ll likely get 4-5 high majors

Six games against resume poison, three of which are being played in a glorified high school gym. We are making no money on these games. If we had any NCAA ambition (I realize that we do not) these games provided zero assistance in that department, and can only hurt us.

A couple of tune up games is fine. Six totally uncompetitive games in a single non-conference sucks. No one wants to watch that.

Rutgers 4-0
FWIW, upcoming (possible) opponents, KenPom Ranking and SOS to date:

NC State 21 & 264
USC 27 & 257
Kansas St 48 & 207
Boise St 59 & 233
Arizona St 83 & 234
Rutgers 95 & 364
Texas 38 & 362
Wash St 152 & 228
Central C St 296 & 122

So, it seems none of these opponents have played a particularly challenging slate as yet...but their respective rankings certainly will change our SOS ranking dramatically.....our KenPom will depend obviously on how we do in those games

They are also mostly against teams that you didn’t seek out, but play on a regular basis. They just happen to be very down.

And honestly, these games have been interesting to watch, as I try to figure out who all these new guys are.

Resume poison!? Glad to see we have another member of the “I am worried about our March madness resume” club. Welcome aboard!

To date the OOC strength of schedule has been putrid.

After the OOC is done, the strength of schedule should be average to slightly below average.

Would have liked to have seen see some sort of challenging game in the middle of the first 5 games before Maui.

And of course the BE schedule will make the overall schedule OK.

Overall, the OOC is adequate and largely adheres to the scheduling philosophy we've had in place for the last decade.

A solid MTE -- the first two days in Maui present resume building opportunities with a third if we take care of business.
RU plus one more high-major opponent
Several buy games

What hurts is the BE no longer has scheduling arrangements with the Big 10 and the Big 12, which would have added at least one more quality opponent. I would have liked to seen one more decent OOC game, especially at home

When Willard was here, and we were good, he sought out neutral site (MSG) games against P5 opponents. Shaheen has shown little inclination to do so and has only had one team in four years where it's made sense to pursue that route.

This year is more about getting the program back on its feet. Hopefully we're in a position next year where we'll be able to schedule a little more aggressively. The concern, of course, is our coach may not want to.

I’ve seen this said several times now…. When have St. Peter’s, Wagner or NJIT been “up” that it wasn’t considered an afterthought of a game?

Who doesnt play cupcakes the 1st few games? The committee is full of **** in march anyway. They pick and choose their narrative to justify why we dont get in. If u play but a soft ooc schedule theyll point to that. If u play a tough ooc schedule and lose theyll say you are .500 or under in ooc. If we playb decent mid major and win u never get credit, if u lose u look terrible.in the end, just dont be on the bubble

As in ranked in the 300s.

And NJIT doesn’t fit into that, since they’ve only met a couple of times ever, and not this year. But insert FDU if you want.

But …. Teams like St Peter’s, Wagner, Monmouth and FDU have won their conference, includingin years they’ve played SHU. Not happening this year.
