This got me to thinking. Is it possible that Dortch could have a better +/- rating than Sommerville when all is said and done? If Lathan scores 10, but the other team scores every trip down the court, what good is it? Conversely, if Dortch scores 2, but the team is able to keep the game in rock fight mode, who are we better off with?

A Pike coached team is never better off with a Lathan type. He had to go for this reason. I think Lathan could find success in a different style system but so long as Pike is our coach, Lathan was not a fit here. Pike wins through defense first. If he couldn’t win with an offense approach with 2 lottery picks it’s not happening. He needs to go back to his root and it seems he’s trying to do so.

The defense isn’t perfect so far but it’s improved. we’re rebounding much better and playing D in the interior but for a few communication breakdowns. A big metric holding our D back early is 3 point D but there’s a big chance variant in that which I think will normalize some over time. Maine shot 45% from 3 against us. They were 20% against Stonybrook, 29% vs Quinnipac and 23% against GW. I refuse to believe the difference is simply just better 3 point defense by all of these other teams. Maine had a good shooting day against us. A bad shooting day against Stonybrook.

Nope. I actually tend to be extremely optimistic. This year is different. There is no path to this team being good and it’s due to a complete lack of big ten level talent. This is the type of roster we haven’t seen since maybe the Eddie years.

As for comparing it to Kansas— They won comfortably, have a HOF coach, and one of the most loaded rosters in the country. It’s apples to oranges. We don’t have a player that would see the floor on Kansas and many that wouldn’t play on any decent team in power 5.
Now there you go again . We don’t have a player that would see the court at Kansas. Dylan Grant says hello and he says he will dunk on your ***. Your negativity is over the top. We are not a ranked team and we likely are not going to the dance this year but the guys seem to be playing hard, playing defense unlike last year , and a few guys have gotten better. The other night the 4 returning players were the key to beating Lehigh. Now if we get something from the Euros , something from the transfers and something from the freshman , maybe that is a competitive product every night.

We have not played anyone even close to what we will see in Vegas and the Big 10. The analysis works for Patriot League but you could argue the performances will mean big trouble when real competition starts. This team have overwhelmed no one through 3 cupcake games.

We might be in “big trouble” but our results don’t stand out as much different from many other teams in that bracket. Actually, you know who stands out, if anyone as struggling? Oregon.

Possibly as a TE on the football team. Not on the basketball court.
You keep coming back to the result of beating the 300+ ranked teams so far. Yes, I’m happy we did and that’s great. My point is I’m using my eyes evaluating the actual talent of this roster and it’s clear to me we won’t be able to compete in conference. By that I mean win more than 5-6 games.

And yes to Eddie years talent. Corey Sanders and Deshawn Freeman would be the most talented players on this current roster. Shaq Doorson would play over Ogbole. Is Jmike better than Nigel Johnson?

The difference is Pike is a much better coach than Eddie. That’s why he doubled the win total in his first year with mainly Eddie’s players.

I’m not saying the results will be Eddie level win totals but I don’t think this roster is far off talent wise.
What you said about Buchanan just proves that you are way off base.

It feels Pikes teams have always given up good looks from 3 and team success often has depended on how well the other team shoots it.

The eye test tells me we will whip some Big Ten teams and lose bad to some. The top 4-5 teams in the Big Ten are unstoppable but the bottom is horrible. Pike will get some wins. With NIL the extremes of the league have gotten farther away, as expected. We will be middle of the league whem the dust settles. Crown or fringe NIT at the very best, which all things considered would be great

If we get to any type of post season this season would be an enormous success given the optimism that pike can retain his types of guys and guys that want to be here

I mean - if your going strictly by how the teams performed against cupcakes to compare them to Rutgers (that’d be the only true apples to apples for the moment since RU hasnt played a high major yet) - Oregon, UCLA and Michigan State technically looked just as vulnerable as us - no? How could one argue otherwise.

Maryland will be managing that injury to their center now who is their best player.

I’ll add - tonight’s game could be a test. St Joes usually decent so Penn beating them probably means American / Penn aren’t “awful” as far as low majors go. Lehigh might be - or not. We don’t know that yet. They haven’t played any low / mid majors.

Agree 100%. That’s always been Pike’s philosophy which is actually why I’m not as bothered by the metrics right now as some. Only when the scouting report screams lights out shooter does Pike make adjustments to his schemes. Maine hurt us with a walk on shooter going 4-6 and nailed 2 threes with time expiring. They made 9 total 3s in the game.

Pike’s approach has always been to shut down the inside game, lock down the glass and force them to beat us from the perimeter. Lehigh did just that early in the game shooting lights out. Then they cooled off. Pike’s style lends itself to some potential WTF losses when teams are on fire from the outside and sustain it for the whole game. But on the other hand, our style has historically given us a chance against more talented teams than us, especially at home since teams tend to shoot worse on the road.

Perhaps - but I’m not entirely convinced we’ve actually even lost any priority players yet specifically because of NIL. Pike wants Cliff’s departure framed to be about money. I would too. But after a disappointing season perhaps Cliff was just looking to move on like J Young, MJ, Eugene and others before when money wasn’t involved at all. Paul did not leave because of money. Perhaps Cam did, but I think bringing Noah in was a big factor too.

Jordan was unhappy with his PT and had a foot out the door. That one was certainly not NIL nor did we really want to keep him here. Lathan was only about money from the perspective that Pike would’ve let him stay for free or cheap, but he wasn’t a good fit for the program at all. Had he been a stud defender and complemented last years team to an NCAA birth perhaps we would’ve ponied up the funds. I believe Pike proactively chose not to.

Time will tell but I’m optimistic that we will ultimately come up with the money to keep whoever Pike really wants. Argument can be made that he did so this year.

As did Cam - my dim recollection was that Spencer got something like $125K form UConn when RU had offered something like $25K. And that Paul M got close to $400K ... crazy, if true, that Paul got more than 3X what Spencer got.

And .. for those years, the 2nd year of the portal, only, I think, they both left very late in the process - Spencer in May and Paul in June - totally screwing the team and Pikiell ... there was literally nothing they could do to replace them adequately.

And no way did Spencer leave because Noah was coming on board - I don't think Fernandes even decided for sure until after Spencer left, though Ru had been talking to him.

Omoruyi may have felt his time was over at RU after 4 good years of loyalty. But money almost cewrtainly influenced him: RU did not have the money for even %1 million for him, he got offered $1.8 million supposedly from UNC i think, and the reports are he got $1.4 or $1.5 million from Alabama. He had to know at this stage he was not getting drafted by the NBA, nor was he likely to have a future in the NBA. So this would BE his payday. I do not begrudge him that.

Frankly, I don't really begrudge Paul M's decision - that was a LOT of money, which he was not getting anywhere near that from RU. what I begrudge was the timing. Really bad timing. Really hurtful to the team and program.

You guys are talking in circles but making different points.

PSAL_Hoops is merely stating that our effort and performance in the first three games is no indication at all of how the season will play out, as our results against the cupcakes are no different than the results against cupcakes of Rutgers teams that made the NCAA Tournament and no different than other P5 programs this year. He's absolutely right.

What others are saying is that, regardless of the results to date, they evaluate the players on the roster and how those players look in playing those three games, and they conclude that the roster individually and collectively is not NCAA-caliber. I think most would agree that they're also right.

So, one view is the results-to-date analysis, and the other view is an eye-test analysis. Both things can be true.

No come on

What would you be saying right now if we had won by a combined 5 points at home to Hawaii and Rice - and then followed that up finding ourselves in a 61-60 dog fight with under 7 minutes to play (ultimately won by 14) vs a South Dakota State team that only managed to beat a little NAIA school (Dakota State) by 6. If that was our body of work right now you would not be saying these were impressive wins. You’ll tell me - oh but they played Arizona tough… you wouldn’t be wrong, but again, we haven’t actually played anyone yet. If/when your prophecy is fulfilled and Tenn blows the snot out of us, then sure, fine. But as of right now, we have no data on what we’ll look like against better teams.

How about UCLA’s 6 point win over an Eastern Washington team that hasn’t even beaten a D1 team yet (27 point drubbing by Seattle) followed by a 11 point win vs Pepperdine? Pepperdine hasn’t beaten a D1 team yet either.

Maryland looked pretty bad losing to Georgetown at home. Didn’t lose to a cupcake, but looked pretty pitiful.

Pikiel historically also takes the approach of letting the weakest offensive player on the floor beat you, so it would make sense that he let a walk on get hot from 3.

I don’t know where I implied effort was an issue

I stated that it doesn’t matter to me how close Houston or Purdue or Kansas or a top flight team with a great track record and hall of fame coach and multiple final fours play against an easy opponent early on because they’ve earned enough goodwill with the fan base and reputation and past results that it will turn out fine

Rutgers has not proven anything over the last few years since the tournament seasons which were now 4-5 years ago

I’ve been to all 3 games I know the kids are trying and giving the best effort. That’s clear to me. I can’t ignore the the deficiencies that we can get away with against rider but certainly won’t against Tennessee and Purdue and Michigan state

Again I’m optimistic but even in the seasons with the close games against Lafayette and Bryant etc you KNEW you had 3-4 players or more that were better than every single guy on this team as currently stands and had a lot more confidence they’d figure it out because they’d been there before the previous season

That’s a stretch. Dylan Grant is looking like a very good player. Francis is also turning out to be a gem.

Yes - I did. You seem to have forgotten the context of my comment which was simply to demonstrate that failure to “dominate” lesser competition by 20+ MOV game in and out doesn’t necessarily correlate with how team’s will match up with better competition. If it did, there would be a lot more teams than just Rutgers who should be sweating.

Last season we watched a RU team that got manhandled by Kennesaw St and Princeton with two 18 yr old lottery picks. It literally looked like men versus boys. The current team overall is young but we can see grit and effort. I look forward to seeing a player like Buchanan banging against high level talent in Vegas and in BIG play. A little tunnel vision at times but that dude plays hard. He’s going to attract attention driving to the paint to find open shooters outside the three or at worst get some big men in foul trouble.

Outside of two players that left for the NBA there’s no other player that left that I’d want on this current team [and that includes Lathan].

Not saying let’s get out the brackets to check our potential seeding. All I’m saying is this team is playing hard and Pike is coaching a team. Not individual egos.

Let’s see what happens.

I don’t understand how giving a realistic analysis of the team that you don’t like means I need to grow up. To me, I’ve seen nothing from Buchanan that remotely indicates he will be an impactful big ten player. He can’t shoot from the outside and he’s not going to bully himself to the hoop in conference. I also commented that Badalau was very promising right after he shot 1/12 in the opener. You can check the post.

I’m in my seat every game and give a lot of time and money to the program. As you mentioned yourself, I’ve been reasonable and balanced. I think I still am but just saying the reality you and others may not have accepted.

I don't imagine many posters have any issues with your opinions or your support for the team. They are certainly reasonable. The question is how much more reasonable are they than anybody else's?

The possible problem, as I see it, is that you are positive your opinion is right, and any opposing opinions are wrong - just like we always see from Bac.

I don't know what the odds are that you are on the money, but I suspect they are somewhat below 100%.
We are supposed to be learning from each other's opinions, not lecturing people about why their opinion must be wrong.

IMO your comments come across in that manner.
You are certainly welcome to see it differently.

Eddie Jordan? Come on man. Stop acting like we opened the season grinding out a win vs a DIII school like Rutgers-Newark or something. That RU team by the way, lost significant talent in Freeman a few games later. Freeman scored 13 vs RU- Newark so that one arguably a loss without him. We’re nowhere near as bad as that team.

Forget Kansas if you like. Only a few games in - conference peers who have not won all their low major games by 12+:

Indiana 69 - Incarerate Word 61
Minny 75 - Green Bay 69 OT
UCLA 80 - East Washington 74 or UCLA 74 - Pepperdine 63
Michigan St 80 - Colgate 69
Purdue 87 - Oakland 77
PSU 76 - Fairfield 68 or PSU 80 - Navy 71
Oregon 60 Hawaii 59 or Oregon 67 - Rice 63

Almost half. Washington just missed with a 13 point win over Denver. Very few conference teams have a clean slate of 20+ dominated wins. We likely will suck, as the paper talent suggests - but in terms of the actually game outcomes what we’ve done so far blends fine with the crowd. Put differently - in BAC terms, if miraculously we end up 20-12 or whatever none of our first 3 game results are on the resume concern radar or raise eyebrows. It’s an untrue statement to say we’ve looked or performed historically poor to date.

Now if we get something from the Euros , something from the transfers and something from the freshman , maybe that is a competitive product every night.

we struggled against 3 of the 4 awful teams we faced to go 4-0. This loss isn’t surprising since Ccsu is the best if the mid majors we’ve faced.

Craziest part is I’m a scarlet colored glasses wearing homer myself! I just also unfortunately have eyes and have watched a lot of basketball.
