Good. **** em. Them and Westside
Westside may try to recruit, but I'm pretty certain they're getting kids when they are entering 9th grade. Not trying to grab kids going into their final year as Seniors.

I dunno what the answer is, but change is necessary. I coached on a girls' basketball staff in Class A. We benefitted from transfers and got burned by them. That was over 10 years ago and its 10x worse now in all sports.

Sometimes I think about getting back into coaching, but the dynamic has changed such that building mentoring relationships with players and families doesn't matter if there's always a place to go where a team can be used to the benefit of an individual.

An example: There was a local quarterback who played for a lower level Class A school. Dad thought they needed exposure, even though national articles were being written about the player. Summer after Soph. year, its down to Texas. Halfway through the summer, it's realized that this player isn't yet good enough for a starting spot in Texas HS FB. So then off to Oklahoma. The player plays JV and varsity, and dad quits him from the team. Comes back to the area and plays senior year. Solid season, but not the kind of offers that dad envisions. Kid is still young, so dad sends him to prep school out East. So far, the team is uncompetitive, at 0-6. The player seems a good young person who works hard.

Dad and I have had past dealings. He once told me, "I'm sure you do a great job with kids. But frankly, I don't care about other people's kids. I'm here for my kids." As upsetting as it was to hear that at the time, I see that mindset prevailing in prep athletics, and that's why we see what we see in 2025.

“Due to the extent of player injuries sustained in last week’s game, and a number of other factors...."

Does anyone have an idea what the other factors are? Is it they just don't want to get beat down and have to forfeit at half? Or are they protesting the way Millard South acquires talent?

Is it true MS recruited KC for players. Or bussing players in?
They are 342-10 against class A schools this year. Isn't good for the Millard South players, and isn't good for anybody else...Nebraska needs to make a high school all star team or two and play in the region...parents probably have enough money to do it as well. Imagine when those MS players go to college and actually have some competition.

It is getting stupid, open enrollment or whatever they want to call it now, is dumb.

Someone mentioned active recruiting HS kids and not just from middle school, they totally do both. I don't know if it is always the coaches doing it, sometimes it is, but a lot of the times it is the students because they are friends with each other.

With that said, the forfeiting is also getting stupid. Might as well play the game.

This is all on the spineless administrators who run the NSAA. Put some controls on open enrollment in Nebraska. It would not be that hard to do. Pass some domicile legislation with some teeth to it, like many states have done. Simply requiring families of students who attend school X to actually establish their legal domicile (not just rent an apartment) in that district would solve almost all the problems. But the NSAA is afraid to piss off Westside and Millard. It's a disgrace.

I think each district gets to create their own rules in terms of enrollment. I am not sure how much the NSAA can do with that part but they could, like you said, do some sit-out rules with more teeth.

I’m torn on playing the game. Ms beat a team 77-0 that they lost to 57-0. Not sure that benefits anyone

Man, my best memories of HS football were the big wins in hard fought games. Not to get all "glory days" and rah rah, but I think it would suck to just roll through the season with zero challenges.

Kids are getting benefits too, goodies at least from schools to go there. And the worst thing is that the quality of football is plummeting and the kids think they are good by beating people 100-0. Problem goes all the way up to the NFL. Nobody can remember plays, protections, nobody has good technique, and there isn't any competition or reason to study or prepare because the NFL is running the same crap as High schools. The only purpose of the game is a quick money grab, social media exposure, and to play in front of thousands. At least in baseball and basketball you have to play every day or every other day...in football, you can sit out practice and play once a week.

Of their best 10 players, I wonder how many of them actually came up through Millard South's system? Zero?

The state legislature is responsible for Nebraska being an open enrollment state . It’s up the each individual school district on if they want to accept kids this way or not. The NSAA has zero control.

Yeah I'm old enough to remember when the open enrollment law was first passed. The original bill had a sit-out-one-year provision to discourage transfers based on athletics. That part of the bill was repealed a few years later. At the time, repealing it didn't lead to a wave of transfers or recruiting. Whole different world now, obviously.

Need to go back to some of the older rules that the NSAA had. Change the deadline back to March 15 or earlier for transfers to be eligible in the fall. Right now that deadline is May 1. If they aren't on the March 15 list then they should be ineligible for 90 days unless there is a change of domicile. Class A has been a mess for a long time and it keeps getting worse.

I agree. But beating teams 77-0. MS coaches kinda of seems to be a bit douchy.
Their last coach was a doosher. The guy before him seemed okay. I don't know the new guy at all, but he might be a doosher too. I don't coach football anymore so I am sort of out of the loop when it comes to the newer guys.

Yeah, like Bennington is "open" enrollment but they have not actually taken a kid from outside Bennington for like 20 years.

Westside was closed, years ago, but opened up maybe 15 years ago? I am not sure.

Class A is a hot mess, about half the schools blow and the games aren’t even competitive.
Lol Class B, C1, C2, D1, and D2 have been dealing with this crap from private schools for the past 30 years.

You had the best athletes in a 30 mile radius of Hastings being recruited in middle school to go beat up on towns with a population of 2,500.

Funny how people are now starting to complain when it trickles up to Class A.

The MS story is kind of wild. Yes, they had a kid starting on the team that was from KC. I guess his dad was looking for work and trying to move to Millard from KC, but that didn't pan out, school had started, so the kid stayed with a teammates family rather than going back to KC. What's funny is they got caught because the mom of the kid who wasn't playing because the KC "recruit" took his spot, turned them in.

I think there is some recruiting but it's mostly peer recruiting. I know 17 of the 22 starters have been playing ball together since middle school, and they just have a stupid amount of both talent and cohesion after playing together since they were young.

Source: Colleague's kid plays for MS.

Some of those Class C schools, particularly in the western part of the state, are just bad at football. My school for example consistently beat up on O'neill, who had both bigger players and a bigger population than we did.

I coached at boys town years ago...we had to bring our team out towards that way.

We killed O'neill and I think it was the first time some of those people saw kids that looked like kids on our Boys Town team! Hahaha

That's how long Bennington has been at or above capacity. We moved less than a mile to be in the District. Secretary at BHS told me to call and verify any house we wanted to bid on was in the district. Said people had bought based on incorrect listings and they were f*****

Those teams at Hastings St. Cecilia, GICC, Kearney Catholic, Heartland Lutheran, Nebraska Christian, North Platte St Pat's, Nebraska City Lourdes, Mount Michael, Gross Catholic, Roncalli...

Programs known for all their state titles year in & year out, haha!

Lol nice cherry picking. Ever heard on Norfolk catholic, humprey st francis, bishop Neumann, Aquinas Catholic? This is a small list, it's even worse in girls sports.

Next time do research before spewing mental retardation.

While i get what you are saying...I think there is a huge difference.

Private schools are in fact competing to get students so that they can...have students.

Mount Michael is a perfect example...they are for the most part, horrible at sports, especially in the last 30 years years, especially in football. They are not out "recruiting" the best middle school football players. They are in fact recruiting anyone boy that can...

1. Pay the tuition
2. Handle the class load

If they happen to be good at football that is just a bonus.

If you think you can effectively tell who will be a stud when they are 18 by watching them play when they are 11...well, that would be amazing.

College coaches with huge staffs have a hard time predicting who will be good in 4 years. Pro-Sports put MILLIONS into scouting the best of the best and they have a hard time predicting which players will end up being good.

LOL there was a certain mortician in Hastings paying the tuition for St. Cecilia athletes. They won multiple state championships when this was going on.

Go ask the Hasting middle schools coaches about this mortician. And their opinion of this practice.

You are a fool if you think this doesn't happen at other priavte schools too.

You forgot Skutt.

My point is that your claim of "smaller public schools having to deal with this (recruiting / transfer) crap" is a silly one. What do they have to deal with exactly? Another school that is average in sports?

Most of these private schools aren't winning state titles or blowing teams out 60-0 on a consistent basis like what MS is doing.

If you live in Humphrey, which I'm guessing has a very high Catholic population, why would you send your kids to public school if you're willing to pay for private school? Even if you arent Catholic, you can still like their model and want to partake in it. That isn't HSF recruiting, it's a culture families want to take part in.
