CFP should be the expectation

So, as I sit here and watch Iowa State compete for the CFP while also being the best program in Iowa. I don't think it's too much to say that the CFP or fringe CFP level team should be the yearly expectation for Iowa. We aren't saying winning it all or make the semifinals, but this 6-6 level crap is not the results we should expect.

Boo ******* hoo. It’s sports. Some teams lose on any given day. Iowa state isn’t making the playoffs.

Correct. But also keep in mind Iowa State has played nothing but cupcakes all year. Iowa is their best win and we're a team that is having a down year this year. Their division is void of elite teams and they will always have an easier path.

I'll be honest when I say that I believe Iowa athletics is on the downturn, though.

The Big 10 appears to be a 2 tier league, you have USC, Oregon, OSU, UM, PSU in tier 1, and everyone else in the lower tier. If you look at the next 10 Big Ten championships, I could easily see all the participants in the Big 10 championship will come only from the top tier. The bottom tier will likely see only 1 or 2 times (at best) where they participate in the Big 10 title game. Hell I have seen Minnesota fans that already accept they will never compete in the title game. Does anyone expect Iowa to make it into the top 2 seeds in the league for a championship game in the next 10 years?

Indiana, Illinois, and ISU have all passed Iowa by. It won’t get any better for the Hawks next year.

Iowa’s program has been in a slow decline for several years now. Many fans refuse to acknowledge this.
Cig is weird enough to want to stay at Indiana. Illinois I'm not sold on yet.
And the clowns luck might run out because they're still the clowns

Why should only Minnesota fans accept reality. Iowa won't be participating in any championship games in my lifetime. It's just what it is.

USC isn't in that tier, and they haven't been for years. It's really just those 4.

Iowa State has the easiest schedule of any Big 12 team… in an already watered down Big 12 conference. Pretty easy path to the CFP for them this year. I don’t think they’re the best Big 12 team (probably 4th or 5th best this year), but that schedule sets up nicely for them. Easy.

To say teams like Iowa State, Illinois and Indiana have passed Iowa by is laughable. They’re all having a better 2 year run than Iowa, but we all know how these things work. In the next few years all of those schools will go back to their usual selves while other similar programs will go on a nice 2-3 year run… like an Iowa, Oklahoma State, Northwestern, etc. These things are cyclical.

I think Iowa playing in the Big Ten west over the past decade or so helped to cover up some inadequacies and also padded their stats. It was a pretty weak division, not to mention that when Oklahoma and Texas were still in the Big 12, Iowa state was beating them both somewhat regularly during Campbell’s tenure.

I think if you can’t see that ISU is now a respectable program, not sure what to tell you.

I don’t disagree Iowa playing in the West gave them a better shot at playing for a conference title, much like Iowa State playing in today’s Big 12 gives them a better shot. The conference is weak.

Nor do I disagree Iowa State is having a nice 2-3 year run, which they’ve done before. That said, I still don’t think Iowa State is the best team in the Big 12. They’ll compete for the Big 12 title, but I think they’re the 4th or 5th best team in the conference. Just my opinion.

Regarding Iowa State beating Texas and Oklahoma regularly under Campbell, I’m not sure I’d use the word regularly. He was 2-6 against Oklahoma and 3-5 against Texas. Not horrible, but not regularly. The same could be said for Iowa and Ferentz against Michigan and Penn State. Ohio State beating Iowa? That’s an example of someone beating someone regularly.

Still, all that said, I like and respect Matt Campbell. He’s doing great things at Iowa State and I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t mind having him at Iowa when Ferentz retires.

It’s the goal for every team.

a bowl game doesn’t mean a damn thing in this era. especially for a team that rakes in money like Iowa.

you bring up good points, but look when those wins for ISU were happening. They were within almost the same 6 or 7 year period which meant ISU was building. It also meant that Campbell didn’t see the CyHawk game as his Super Bowl. I think he’s closer to a Ferentz type than lots of posters want to admit. Run the ball and play good hard defense, he just happens to continue to have good to very good QBs and WRs who can actually play.

Same could be said for Kirk and the teams you brought up, he has struggled against Ohio State (like everyone else), He has been fair against Michigan (my opinion is because under Lloyd Carr they wanted to play the same type of style, they just had better players which kept Iowa in a lot of those games), and Penn St (which while JoePa was there was fine, but ever since he left Iowa hasn’t had much luck against them)

Illinois and Iowa State HAVE passed Iowa. Both teams have more talent at skill positions. ISU actually develops those kind of players. Iowa is so pathetic at developing QBs that they have resorted to paying physically damaged veterans to come in for a season. Iowa doesn't have a WR that would be starting at any other P4 team. The RBs are average at best. Can't even recruit above-average TEs anymore.

CFP? Really??

C'mon man...CFP is reserved for blue bloods like Ohio State, Indiana and SMU. Do you seriously expect little ol' Iowa, with our limited resources, to compete for something that only history-laden programs like Boise State and Arizona State are capable of accomplishing?

I don't know how slow it's been. The offense was tanking as soon as Stanley left and never recovered. The defense and special teams are still among the best in the nation.

Iowa State and Iowa could be on the same level every year and Iowa State will have a much better chance of making the playoffs every year. This is the world we now live in since the Big Ten decided to turn into the British Empire.

Yearly expectation of a CFP? No. I think that's a bit too optimistic.

Being able to break the top 12 and get into the CFP here and there? Yes. There are some years in the past quarter century where that would've been the case. 2002, 2009 and 2015 for sure. No reason to think that couldn't or shouldn't happen going forward.

02,03,04,09,15 would be CFP teams under the current setup or should be. 03 may be left out.

19 & 20 would be battling for a spot.

I thought about the 03 and 04 teams but wasnt quite sure if they'd have quite made top 12 prior to bowl games or not.. Would have been close.

Iowa won’t be able to roll Yahtzee on an easy big ten west schedule.

going forward they will need to beat at least one high level team and not stub their toe against anybody else. Realistically they might need to beat two high level teams depending on what everybody else does.

the “past” isn’t going to help them going forward in a beefed up Big Ten with “roided” up payrolls.

Iowa will get a lot of money but a playoff appearance might be once a generation in this era.

will the donors still donate? They might ask themselves “Iowa isn’t making the playoffs with my money so why bother”.

you are comparing Iowa to a team that beat them by 3 points at their house and plays in a conference with no traditional power programs?

To me that would be the same as trashing Michigan St for not winning the B1G East while Iowa was winning the B1G West.
