Looking back on Stanzi's Sr year. 221-345. 25 TD's and 6 picks. Not sure if we played 12 or 13 games that year, but that's 26 passing attempts a game. Now we're averaging 10 in the first 2 games? 25 passing TD's? That's 3-4 seasons now. And I will always remember the game winning drive against Michigan St on the road. Now that was a 2 minute offense. A QB that could take command of a game and stand tall in the pocket and not afraid to make a play. What the F has happened?

Stanzi did his thing no matter what. KF probably thinks he did the right thing going back to QBs who are "more coachable."

Kirk hasn’t trusted an OC since KOK.

And he showed in 2011, by shutting down the no-huddle attack after two 3-and-outs at PSU, that he didn’t fully trust KOK all the way either. That was just too uncomfortable.

Drew Tate in his 3 years threw 375 times in his first year of starting! Now I can't remember if that was the year we were down to our 5th and 6th string running backs, 2nd year he threw it 352 and the same his Sr year. 20-14, 22-7, and 18-13. It's absolutely crazy how guys like @eyesofhawk and others say he's always been about ball control and this that and the other BS. The stats from Tate and Stanzi show he allowed these guys to go out and play football. Both were also conference QB's.

Going even further back to 2014,

Rudock proceeds to throw check down to RB over and over. Even the announcers commented about it’s not the right read - decision when you have limited time and long field

Iowa QBs are coached to never ever take a chance. It becomes second nature even when nature requires something else
Rudock. The much maligned QB, transfers to Michigan after 2014 and does this in his only year for the Wolves:

- On Nov 14 against Indiana, Rudock became just the 2nd Big Ten player in the last 20 years to throw for over 400 yards (440) and 6 touchdowns in a game
....and set the Michigan record for single-game touchdown passes.
- The following week against Penn State, he became the 1st quarterback in school history to pass for 250 yards in three consecutive games.
- Rudock became the 1st quarterback in Michigan history to throw for at least 250 yards in five consecutive games.
- Rudock became just the 2nd Michigan quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a single season.

Law, always agree.
But #4 is wrong this time.

0% of this is on MG.
0%.

You could take the BEST QB CANDIDATE EVER and put into this system, with the same instructions, and you'll get this.

Reminds me of Browns fans, who just somehow think it's been all bad luck for 23 straight QBs or whatever. Until one of them goes to Tampa and lights it up. Maybe Baker didn't start "trying" until he went to Tampa.

It ain't at ALL who the QB is, it's the system. And ALL the system. Not just "most" like many say.

Deacon and Cade sucked PLUS a bad system, so it's easy to think part of the bad performance was on them.
MG doesn't suck. The system does.
0% of this is on MG? c'mon. I'm all for blaming coaching and play calling when it's due...but let's face it, Gronk was the beneficiary of Iowa's best OL in the past 5 years and a running game that was thriving (Jaz was averaging 5.5 yards every time he touched the ball).

If MG shoulders none of the blame for Iowa only putting up 13 points, how can you explain how he threw the ball 24 times in the game, yet only gained 83 yards through the air? That's just 3 yards per pass...beyond abysmal. Worse than Cade. And poor passing aside, no 5th year senior QB worth their salt takes those kind of late game sacks. They just don't. Starting in junior high, QBs learn to throw the ball away.

Tbf, we also would've beaten Michigan in the BTCG that year if they would've made it instead of MSU. Stupid MSU and their try-hard defense with their stupid bought and paid for refs swallowing their whistles on the final drive, and stupid Mark Dantonio for having a stupid face and his team benefitting from our unlucky bounces like the interception in the endzone. Can we beat Michigan State this year, beat down their mascot and steal his headgear, and then send the torn up head along with film of the game to stupid Mark Dantonio ala The Godfather?.................

Sorry, my ptsd was kicking in.

Ohio State was truly the best team in the league that season. Their home loss to MSU was a slow-motion train wreck. It was like Urban intentionally lost that one.

How do I explain it?
The system.
You don't think his hands are tied, completely?
Its a lot easier to pin blame on a person than an entity, which is all you're doing here.

What poor vision? You mean not throwing to the player he's not told to?

I know opinions are like aholes and all, and I used to be of the "yeah, everyone is to blame here", like system/QB is 80/20.
Now, this year, I'm fully behind 100/0 with MG.

MG in the right system? He'd be amazing and then you'd be saying "Man, if we only had that MG from __________, we'd be awesome. There is a reason why guys like that don't come here".

Well, here he is. We do have him.

The "system" that you bemoan is supposedly the Shanahan offense. That is supposed to be one of the most effective and modern style of offenses out there. Granted, Lester got wayyyy too much hype for his understanding of the offense, given that he worked just 9 months as a low level analyst for the Packers (after getting his @SS fired from his job for being a poor play caller), but his preaching of the Shanahan offense is what got him hired in the first place.

This system is supposed to simplify reads for QBs and create a lot of 1 on 1 matchups that allows the QBs to shine. It is also supposed to heavily utilize the play action pass, which you would think would get Iowa's tight ends a lot of looks. Unfortunately, this particular QB in a QB friendly system, has been utterly unable to execute even at the level Iowa's 5th string walk-on QB Stratton did last year in the same system.

So how was he able to execute for 10,000 yards and 2 natty's at his previous stop? You don't just forget how to play Quarterback and be as successful as he was. 232-356 65% 2967 yards, 209-307 68% 3058 yards, 206-338 60% 2721 yards. 26-5, 29-5 and 23-7. So it's also not like he wasn't slinging it a bit and just handing the ball off. Again, how many times did Klatt show a replay and show our receivers blanketed and him begging for us to run a double move on somebody? Now he's certainly missed a few guys but his track record is just to good for this to be so ******. And since it's now been going on for more than a few years it all leads back to scheme. And lack of talent at the receiver position does not help.

Fair point, as you'd like to think Iowa has more talented receivers than they have at South Dakota State. But my guess is some of the guys running routes at Iowa wouldn't make the rosters at an FCS powerhouse. I'm wondering if the level of competition at Iowa is just too much for Gronk. Corners are better, the speed of play is better, etc. It's definitely a mystery how a guy who threw for 10,000 yards couldn't complete wide open 10 yard passes against Albany.

Lester got fired because WMU had a poor season. WMU’s administration didn’t understand at the time what the portal was about to do to the MAC.

He was a very good coach there.

This is what—the second year we have depended on a new NIL QB? As unorthodox as this sounds (these days), maybe Kirk should just go back to the developmental QB approach with the best we can get out of high school. Would that really be any worse than what we have seen recently? At least that way, they can participate in spring ball.

And it's de ja vu all over again. New quarterback, new receivers, new offensive coordinator, same ol run up the middle on 1st, run up the middle on 2nd, and reluctantly pass on 3rd as long as it's 5 yards short of the sticks. Same ol' playing not to lose. Same ol QB regression. The Hawks lose 16-13 despite having the ball and plenty of time to pull off a win at the end. Outcoached and far too much randying around on offense/special teams.

1. OLine Looked Elite. It's been years since Iowa had a solid offensive line. This group is the real deal. Pass protection was as good as Iowa has had in 20 years. This year's starters average over 300 lbs and 6'4 and tend not to whiff on blocks. Dunker and Jones are all-Big 10 caliber players who did everything possible to win the game.

2. Just When You Thought Iowa's WR's Couldn't Get Any Worse. Smith Marsette has not caught a pass at Iowa since 2020. Sadly, if you look at the 15 or so WRs who have started at Iowa since 2020, and 20 backups who saw reps, none were talented enough to play Big 10 football (except Charlie Jones, who rode the bench at Iowa so he left and became an all-American somewhere else). The cupboard is BARE in the WR room. Phillips, Anderson, and Wetjen, all "scholarship Big 10 WRs," combined for 3 catches for 24 yards and some awful drops and a fall resulting in a near pick 6.

3. Sharar Coming of Age. Like Higgins, Sharar waited his turn. This senior from small town Iowa was all over the field and playing like he belongs out there. He finished with 7 tackles on the day, but he was disruptive and looks to be another stud LB in a long line of stud LBs at Iowa. Harrell, his partner at LB, also had a nice game with 9 tackles and 1 forced fumble.

4. Refund on Gronk. Let's call a spade a spade. Not only was Gronk bad, he was historically bad. Iowa's $2M NIL crown jewel just set the Big 10 record for LEAST passing yards in the first two games of the season! While his 13/24 for 83 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT was pathetic, the most disappointing part of the performance was his failure to lead when the game was on the line. When the pressure was on, the "winningest D1 QB in history" pissed down his leg with the worst clutch performance I've seen from a Hawkeye QB. I guess at least he wasn't so amped up that he had to take himself out of the game with cramps like he did against mighty Albany.

5. Jaz Is Clearly In Kirk's Dog House. Typically, talented players are praised for sticking it out at a school despite not getting the kind of playing time they deserve. Kirk's reward for Jaz in returning to Iowa this year rather than jumping in the transfer portal was to make him Iowa's 4th string RB, despite being the best back. Moulton is hurt, so Kirk went with Terrell Washington? Why? Washington proceeded to average just 1 yard per carry after playing poorly last week as well. Then Kirk went with Williams, who was more deserving. But Williams too struggled, finishing with just 3.7 yrds per carry. When Jaz finally saw the field, the team's most senior back ran angry. 11 carries for 60 yards for an avg of 5.5 yards per carry. Jaz carried the inept offense on his shoulders but didn't have the supporting cast to pull off the win.

I honestly don’t see how the Hawks will make a bowl. Where are the wins coming from?
UMass? Yes. Rutgers and Michigan State? Maybe. Indiana? Doubt it. Oregon or Penn State? <insert hysterical laugh emoji>. Nebraska? Also doubt it. Minnesota and Wisconsin don’t appear to be the pushover some Hawk fans thought. USC? On the West coast? Nope.

The Hawks could very well be looking at a 4-5 win season, unless there is a BIG improvement in the offense.
4 wins will take a lot of home game luck. Some of these games will get ugly real fast see Oregon, Penn State, and USC.

So this year's Albany team played too fast for him compared to the playoff team they had two years ago where he won 59 zip? Do you even stop to think how stupid that take is?

And the clowns are a glorified FCS team so saying the speed is too quick for him could be the dumbest take of anyone on here and there's about three posters still saying that.

Iowa Sate, the undefeated14th ranked team in the country, who put a starting QB, starting RB, and several starting WRs in the NFL in the past few years...is a "glorified FCS team?" The best use of your astute analysis is for us to print it off and use it as toilet paper after a midnight run to Taco Bell.

He's 7 months post surgery on his throwing shoulder. His previous competition was all FCS level. He's learning a completely new scheme than he ran previously.

Other than that nothing has changed for the young man.

This is not a good QB today. If you've watched him throw the last 2 games something isn't right with him. He's thrown just a few good balls that were right on target. The rest were thrown too low, too high, or simply off target. There were other times where the target was open and he didn't pull the trigger at all or was late with the ball. The most logical reasons for it are that his arm isn't the same since surgery, he lacks confidence in his arm to get it there, or he's not yet comfortable with the system. He was truly awful vs Albany. He was only bad vs Iowa State.

I'm not blaming Gronowski for taking a bunch of money to play poorly. I am certain that he's doing the best he can. It's just not good. It's on the staff to find and prepare the best QB possible. Not the player.

Saying Mighty Albany played too fast for MG is loony. Nice if you to not own that stupid take. And the clowns suck. Of course you would fall for the whacky preseason rankings.

It’s all of this

arm / shoulder isn’t completely healed
Doesn’t trust it yet
Isn’t comfortable with system or WR

Iowa Sate, the undefeated14th ranked team in the country, who put a starting QB, starting RB, and several starting WRs in the NFL in the past few years...is a "glorified FCS team?" The best use of your astute analysis is for us to print it off and use it as toilet paper after a midnight run to Taco Bell.
Go back to Hawkeye Beacon. Thanks in advance.

The most logical reason, and the actual reason, is he's playing with his hands tied in a (bad) new system, with a whopping TWO FULL GAMES under his belt.

So yeah, I guess he totally should be ready :eyeroll:

There is NO QB ANYWHERE, who'd come in and NOT do those things with the same.

So, I did include what you just stated as one of the reasons why he has performed so poorly, but it in no way explains the poor throws. Why do you believe his hands are tied? Do you want to compare his first 2 starts to Sullivan's first 2 starts last year in this same offense when it was brand new to everyone on the field? The oline is much better this year and the receivers are now in their second year as well. He's had all day to throw on the vast majority of his snaps and yet this senior QB with dozens of starts behind him has struggled as much or more than any other QB in the country. Being in a new system definitely raises the level of difficulty, but
there are QB's now transferring all over the country that haven't struggled nearly to the degree that MG has.

Awww, the poor 24 year old only has "two full games under his belt?" lol See IowaLaw's thread about all of the freshmen QBs out there with just two games total under their belts who are playing light years ahead of Iowa's QB with something like 40 college starts under his belt.

Yet, the squawks have lost the last two to ISU and 3 out of the last 4, what does that say about the talent level at ol squawk U?
