I didn't see enough of St0
1) And Iowa has 'paid the price' because of this - many guys have taken the field, starting several games/seasons when they weren't good enough. But hey, they were loyal to the program! Building your program on this premise certainly makes you a nice, well-liked coach, but it means you're not doing everything in your power to win ball games.

2) Because, obviously, neither of those quarterbacks were deemed good enough to take Iowa anywhere in 2025 or beyond.
The loyalty issue you mention seems separate from the issue of developing high school QBs versus bringing in QBs from the portal or developing the talent you have. At other positions I think Kirk has done a good job supplementing from the portal as needed. His management of the QB position has a long ugly history.

Iowa now with 60 consecutive games without a 300 yard passer. Next closest, Rutgers with 30 consecutive games. 😂

I didn't see enough of Stratton to know what he can really do, but Sullivan had the best numbers of any Iowa QB since Stanley and could also get first downs and extend plays with his legs. I have no idea what was going on behind the scenes between him and the staff but apparently they didn’t see him as their starting QB or he'd still be a Hawk. Brown could have still been added as a depth piece.
It's borderline criminal that he was stuck behind Cade instead of the starter

Far and above the best option? All you know is that Kirk felt that Gronowski was the best option at the time or he wouldn't be here. Just like he thought Cade was the best option before him right up until the moment he decided that he wasn't.
He absolutely was the best option, the Cade experiment was an unmitigated disaster, combo of a gawd awful line, ****** QB, and worse WRs. The WRs are a question mark, the line is more than solid, so we will see. It isn't like the staff didn't go after other QBs, Murphy from OSU didn't look great last weekend. Looking at Pribula, that was the miss (although I don't think they had the money).

It's rare that the best option would be a guy requiring surgery on his throwing shoulder and the idea that he was otherwise destined for the NFL is nonsense. That's a risky bet. The Hawks might have been better served by just keeping Sullivan who showed himself to be Iowa's best QB in years and acquiring someone like Brown as a backup/heir apparent. The money could have been used elsewhere.

Sullivan was hot and cold. He made some nice plays but also some bad ones. One thing for sure, KFz is no better at the Quarterback game using the portal than he is with the conventional method.

He completed 71% of his passes with a 154 passer rating averaging 9 yards per attempt. He also ran for 150 yards with a 3.2 average which is excellent for a qb. He only really played in 4 games but those numbers are better than anyone else in the KF era.

Seems like better moneyball would have been that route and used the money on wide receivers, or any other area of weakness that hasn't exposed itself to the fans yet, but the coaches have lost sleep about such as possibly DB.

I have no idea how MG will rebound this week. Hopefully he will. Just have to wait and see. But my question, how good is Tim Lester? Is any of this on him?

I have no idea and will let you experts figure it out.

So Carson Beck was also a relatively risky proposition, but before Beck even entered the portal, surgery had already been successfully performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache who is a world renowned sports injury surgeon specializing in exactly that type of surgery. He's lead doctor for the Dodgers and Rams and I'm sure that his prognosis for recovery carried a lot of weight with prospective suitors. He's performed Tommy John surgery (the same performed on Beck) on a lot of famous athletes including Clayton Kershaw and Shohei Ohtani. Given this background, it was pretty much a given that Beck would be ready to go in the Spring and make a full recovery in time for the season to begin.

And therein lies the breaking point of NIL. IMO this is the main reason that the kids are put on payroll now. The risk associated does not provide a sustainable model to support bidding wars for college kids. Coaches such as KF certainly don’t want to be beholden to donors when deciding to play kids or not, and donors aren’t going to be money pits for players that don’t provide the necessary ROI.
There is NO ROI for people donating money to these collectives. You have zero control over how the kid plays, IF the kid plays, if he gets injured, or if he just mails it in given he's already getting the money. You know what they say, "A fool and his money are soon parted".. And to be clear, true NIL is what Caitlin Clark was doing at Iowa where she had endorsement deals with major brands and they paid her as a spokesperson or in commercials. Whats going on with 95% of these players has nothing to do with NIL..Name, image and likeness...

Honestly have zero idea what point you are trying to make. Gronowski is 100%, he made some nice throws, the full game is available to watch. There were two major hiccups early with the skip pass in the endzone and the over throw to the back. If he completely ***** the bed next week then feel free to *****, I'll hold off judgement.

My only point was that I don't know if he was the best option available (and neither do you regardless of your certainty that he was) or whether it was even necessary to hit the portal for a starting QB given the presence of Sullivan on the roster.

I'm not passing judgment on MG yet. You're putting lipstick on a pig. He was dog$hit last week. Doesn't mean he'll be dog$hit all year. That story hasn't been written yet. I hope he kills it vs ISU.

Just to be clear, you think the better option in the offseason was to hold on to Sullivan, a dude that transferred to Tulane and was beat out by Retzlaff a QB that didn't transfer until mid summer? There will always be a hindsight scenario, and maybe Gronowski does blow, but from the QBs Iowa was in contact with, he was the only one that bit outside of Brown, and from what I've seen from Brown, both on film and in the spring, I am glad Gronowski came on board.

He threw for 44 yards. He had a QBR of 24. And just like the past 3 years we completed a total of 3 passes to wide receivers. I know, I know, once the game was in the bag we just ran the ball. But while we were actually attempting to pass the ball it looked actually as bad or worse than it ever has. I like the fact that he can run the ball and hopefully be a dual threat QB. But by dual threat he needs to be able to actually pass the ball, not just run it. I'm actually very high on Lester, especially considering what he had to work with last year. Bottom 3 WR group plus QB last year and was still able to find a way to run the ball effectively. That takes some scheming. And I think our defense will be up to the challenge this week. He's going to have 3-4 opportunities this week to make a play, and he's got to be able to do it. We will need a few turnovers from the defense and possibly a few big runs from our backs to win this game.

Sullivan wasn't beat out. He was competing with Retzlaff for the starting job when he got injured being tackled during a practice drill. That's the same Retzlaff who won 11 games as the starting QB at BYU last year. He passed for 152 and ran for 113 against Northwestern on Saturday. He might be better than Sullivan. The guy's no slouch.

So yeah. Maybe that money would have been better spent on a wide receiver or cb.

He had 15 opportunities, and certainly held onto the ball too long at points, but go back and watch the film. His throws to KJ Parker were dead on, I would have liked to have seen more opportunities, but his legs and lack of turn overs are solid. I am far more worried for the linebackers and secondary next week. They did not spy the QB very well last week, and they certainly will need to this week. If Becht has time to throw the ball, the secondary will need to step it up big time or be scorched.

The same Retzlaff that didn't even make it to Tulane until August? Yeah the math doesn't math. He had a negative MRI, and only came up limping. The depth in the WR room is fine, and they did get Barrios from SD, I agree they should have gone after someone else, but I didn't see a lock down corner in the portal. I am certainly no eyesofhawk, but damn you guys go hard after the first game. Why not ***** about the secondary, or the LBs?

Also, he did lose the starting job, and was available

Just needs to not worry about being perfect and just go out and try to win games, just play football like he has many times before.

We can agree to disagree about Gronowski. I don't think we needed to bring in another QB from the portal in the first place.
Ok who do you start without Gronowski on the team? You have 2 QBs that have thrown just over 50 times in 2 and 3 years in previous seasons.

Or you could pick a 2 time FCS MVP and possible NFL pick while you develop a QB this season.

Not sure if the first half last week wasn't scheme when it comes to "spying the QB. After the first Q and 1/2 he didn't have another run of any substance. My guess is Phil made some adjustments as well as turning up the heat on him when he did pass. I think Phil knows what he's up against Saturday..

I think the concerns with Sullivan were reading coverages and going through his progressions. And taking care of himself, doesn’t do you any good if he’s on the injured list.

Yes. We've seen exactly this progression with Phil's defense many times. They did nothing after halftime.

Sullivan came in here as an unpolished QB and it showed. In Tim Lester we have a coach who could fix some of those issues. I would take what Brendan brought to the table over a QB coming off surgery on his throwing shoulder. As pointed out by another poster we could have still brought in Brown for depth with Stratton having the hernia.
