They have a decent QB, which in college football goes a long way towards having a good team. The defense also looks to be pretty solid.

The thing that concerns me is their passing game against our secondary. I’m not sure our corners and safeties are at the level we’ve come to expect the last 5-10 years.

Hopefully we can get a good pass rush and then control the ball ourselves on offense to limit their possessions.

Tell you what...If there's a group I'm excited about and confident in it's the DL - especially edge rushers.

Llewellyn and Hurkett should have no problem getting around most tackles. A lot of DE's on the roster I'm hoping are ready to step in and dominate.
The rush from the DE's will cause QBs to scramble on the regular, so, hopefully we can contain them once they tuck it and run.

I'm looking for a 50-point win on Saturday....With the second and third string QBs getting snaps late in the 4th.

The Cyclone OL got it together in the 4th quarter, which was key for the win. Their front 7 on D mostly looked good, despite some QB runs, but the DBs got schooled and gave up some big plays.

Plus Graves at tackle. Need a few more to step up at DT.

Overall, they looked alright. The team's best aspect is its QB play. I don't like to admit it, because I think Becht is a weird looking twink, but he's a good QB. He doesn't have what it takes to be elite, but he's above average and has shown the ability to win in tough situations. Sometimes lacks pocket awareness. He was responsible for two key turnovers, with a possible third if KState's DB didn't drop one that was delivered to his bread basket.

WR's took a step back, whether their fans and media want to admit it or not. RB's were more or less a non factor for 3/4's of the game. Their OLine was the glaring flaw on their supposed "amazing" on offense.

Personally, I think their OLine's success in the 4th came more so from KState's defense being gassed/selling out on the pass. All game the pass was the only success Iowa State had. I think KState thought they'd continue to just pass, and they weren't ready for some key run plays from Hansen.

Defense looked alright. Some pretty brutal mistakes from their secondary which resulted in TD's. Some of KState's best plays in the first three quarters were run plays, so I don't think they're an elite run defense.

A lot of KState's issues came from untimely turnovers and outright bad play calling. I think this was a coinflip game that either team could win on a given day. Iowa State is no pushover, but they're the easiest ranked team on our schedule. If we want to have a good season, beating them soundly is required.

I have no worries about their run game, or them stopping our run game. The key to beating the Cyclones is rattling their QB. They live and die by Rocco's performance. Look for our DLine to disrupt and rush him into bad decisions. That will be the key. Our OLine and run game are good enough to score on their defense. But if Mark is at minimum a reliable passing threat, Iowa has a chance to win comfortably in Ames. But if the defense can't get to their QB or our secondary is weaker than we'd hope, it'll be a dogfight until the very end.

Well, K-State's QB's dad and brother were fighting so there's probably something negative going on w/ the Wildcats.

As soon as you answer any of the several times I've asked you to admit you screwed up the abbreviation for SUI and then tripled down on it.

KSU has been playing the same 3-3-5 defense that ISU has been playing for a number of years, yesterday they played a 4-3 defense the entire game, they have a new guy running the defense. So ISU had spent the entire fall expecting to face a 3 man front, and repping blocking schemes for that and got a 4 man front. KSU was subbing along the line the entire game, I tend to think it was the halftime adjustments to blocking the 4 down lineman as opposed to a 3 man front was why they ran the ball better the second half. It also improved the pass blocking as the guards stayed on the tackle/end as he worked outside in the first half, leaving a gapping hole for blitz through, which KSU did. In the second half they were giving the rusher off to the tackle and then picking up the blitzing player.

That's not what I asked. How hard is it to say you were wrong? Half the damn world can't do it for some unknown reason. I also never claimed there wouldn't be any drop-off, stop trying to deflect.

They won but it really wasn't an impressive win. Five TOs by K State was the difference. Three of those TOs, especially two, were dumb decisions by the HC. Kick the FG instead of going for it at the 6 yard line and there's 3 points. Punt at your 30 instead of going for it takes 7 more points (possibly/probably) off ISUs total. There would not have been kneel downs at the end. K State could not get out of there own way yesterday and it very much looked like an Iowa early season game with mental errors. We'll see in three weeks when the Hawks and Cyclones meet but impressed? No.

Lol.

Easy, replacements have been in the program as backups and special teams players long enough to know Parkers "system". The defense is basic.

Objectively speaking, they are a top 25 team. Their defense is going to be formidable and their quarterback is a veteran who is really good. I also like their TEs and believe their receivers will be okay.

The only thing I am not impressed with is their running backs. They are pretty meh.

Kansas State has a lot to fix. They looked pretty average to me, especially the quarterback that the commentators were pumping up so much.
Of course you would think they're top 25 you're almost worse than football than basketball

Wrong. Fall camp is not spent repping blocking schemes for one defensive front. They spend camp installing the blocking for the season against multiple defenses. Those calls should be routine by the week of game prep. Everyone makes adjustments at the half to include just playing more sound football along the lines.

Why would there be a drop off from losing one player? With better more cohesive line development and a running back room of capable backs, the production should be equal or better. There actually will be harder prep for defenses as Iowa has some talent and can play the "hot hand".

Iowa should have better prep for Iowa State. Rocco has been around. Good QB and is the guy that makes the Cyclones a decent team. I do not think he has the supporting cast on either side of the ball the Cyclones have in the past.

The Cyclones defensive front will see the best offensive line they will see all year. Ill take Iowa's best three lineman against the Cyclone front all day. Competent play calling along with a better line...

Defensively it is all on Phil on how he attacks or doesn't Rocco. If he blitzes correctly, Rocco will have a long day as Iowa can blitz two specific players that are all around solid athletic playmakers. Rocco is a good tune up for some good conference QB's. QB's that are better by far.

Interesting Iowa State fans are jacked up. There is a reason we all know why the Cyclones and KSU are ranked. Iowa fans acknowledge how bad the QB play with some meh offensive line play has been. In life we all move forward and what was a couple of years ago is gone. Long gone. There is a substantial playbook that Iowa State has and can only guess about. Lester is a very gifted coach that has the players to start writing his head coaching resume with again. Iowa State fans need to cross their fingers, legs, and hope that they aren't the team that suffers bad taste.

Your new DC switches defense like that and it is in the media. Not possible that was a surprise for the clowns.
I had looked at what KSU had leading up to the game, and nowhere did I see it stated they were moving to a 4 man Dline front. It's very possible that they may have said we are going to play it every now and then, to confuse the teams they are playing the first week, while planning on playing it full time. ISU stated they were going to play some 4 man fronts last season, and never did, so it does happen. The head coach would have the final decision on what front to use, maybe the new guy convinced Klieman that switching over to a 4 man front was best for the team.

Does the Squawk media give out detailed reports on what the teams is going to be working on in the preseason, or is it nothing more than a general idea? Oh, we have been working on more screen passes, and then when the season starts they throw very few screen passes, but the team they were planning had to waste time scheming for something that never happened.

Incorrect, the week up to the game, you are practicing for what you believe you are going to face. KSU had played a 3 man front for years, do you think that ISU spent a lot of time prepping for what they thought they would never see? Sure you put in how to block the even front, but since you believe you are not going to see it this game, most of your blocking schemes would have been to prepare for a 3 man front.
Its why teams struggle so much the first game, they have no film on the team, just last years tape, so they are going off that, to get a feel of what the other teams is going to do.

So you think that the Squawks are not going to miss Johnson, at all, and the running game will improve. Good to know, you should expect then 150 yards and a couple TDs per game from the running backs.

Please logically explain how you came to that deduction.
sitting kaleb once he got us into sniffing distance of the red zone. 3 first and goal possessions within 5 yards from end zone yielded 12 points. chasing points (via 2 point conversion) when it was unnecessary. the decisions that accomplished last years isu loss handily outdid ksu brain trust’s feat from this year imo

Most teams use a 4 man front so the ISU D is coached to play against it. KState using it was no big shock.

I think both KSU and ISU have good teams that will win a lot of games. Travel to Ireland and playing in the rain for Game 1 certainly help them look overly sharp.

ISU won and evenly matched game. In other words they figured out a way to win. They used to lose most of those kinds of games.

Brecht look really good at times, not so much at other times. Again, game 1. For sure he has a strong arm and can make all the throws.

The RB looks pretty good, but he doesn't scare me, The OL opened some holes for him in the second half.

In short, while ISU wasn't really impressive, they looked good enough to be able beat the Hawks.
Where Brecht really excels is getting out of trouble when the pocket breaks down

Do you read? They game prep the week before a game is exactly what I said.
Get a clue about fall camp football and prep. Fall camp is about working on your offense against whatever front you may face during the season. A team does not solely concentrate on only one defense.

You have surely shown a lack of football in your background in your replies. Why would a team expect a drop in production when the offensive line should be better and more seasoned under the offensive scheme? Continuation and improvement should always be a goal. Offensive production overall should improve.

By your logic, the Cyclones passing game should diminish with the receivers that are gone. Your logic, not mine.

Not really. I do think their play-action/quick strike to their tight ends could give our linebackers some fits along with Becht's legs. But overall, I don't see Hanson or Sama running the ball effectively against us. Their offensive line wasn't very good in pass pro. Their WR's don't scare me nearly as much as last season.

I think we'll put them in a lot of 3rd and 5+ situations. Need to win on 3rd down at better than 50% rate.

Offensively, I think we'll be able to run the ball and move the ball. We can't have fluke turnovers or bad turnovers. Special teams needs to play better than their special teams.

We can't get down by more than 7 early either.

As long as we do those things above, I'm liking our chances.

Iowa State isnt gonna line up and try to run right at Iowa. They're gonna dig Iowa's LBs outta the box formation wise and put those guys in space. Be interesting seeing how the LBs do. Albany isnt test for them, Iowa State will be the first test for the new LBs
