"Hey Brian. Don't know if you've heard but we have a punter this season that's nailing 75 yarders. Wondering if you'd be willing to take the OC job back this year for 100K. You can just bring your old playbook..."

It's also interesting that Iowa, and some other schools, have to go to Australia, a country of 27 million (Texas is 31 million) to find punters. The population of the US is 340 million. But hey, Iowa seems to be finding some great ones.

The kid from Mediapolis got a full ride at Georgia. IIRC, Iowa was putzing around with him and wanted him to walk on while at the same time they were working on getting someone from Australia (to keep that pipeline active).

Is he first string yet? I questioned why Iowa didn't offer him, but Rhys has put that question to rest. Rhys is pretty damn good.

good hang time, dropping it inside the 20, etc?

any shanks?
Dude, his hang time was something to behold. I'd like to know what the official hang times were on his first one and his last one today. He had zero shanks, some were better than others but he had two today that were about as good as I've ever seen. Even his lesser ones were good for an average punter. The announcer, who is generally quiet throughout the day even said "better check to see if that's a regulation ball". If our D is anywhere near as good as two years ago we will win games on defense and punting alone.

Eh, you do what you have to do. Besides, Georgia doesn't punt as much as Iowa does. At least the Iowa kid ended up somewhere.

Sure, lol.

That's why the sport is called "foot"ball.

Smh
Since you are laughing and shaking your head over the fact I prefer fewer punts, you apparently prefer MORE punts. Especially when you say the sport is “foot”ball.

I can only laugh and shake my head at you. You would rather punt. I would rather the Hawk’s drives end in scores.

But….you do you. 🤡

They grow up from a young age kicking like we do throwing a baseball. If everyone here grew up kicking like that there would be plenty of punters to go around.

My comment was in relation to you having said, "punting is losing".

Good punt games are a huge factor in winning

Never said a good punt game can’t be a factor in winning. But if every drive ends in a punt you are going to lose 99% of the time…period. End of story.

Even though you have argued the point in the past, the MAIN overall objective of the offense is to score points. You can’t win if you don’t score. Yes, there are times when it is more important for the offense to move the chains and chew up clock than it is to score. Everyone knows that.

Punting the ball gives possession back to the other team. Naturally when you do punt, you want to pin the other team as deep as possible. A good punter and coverage team will do that and can be *a* factor in winning. But there is NEVER, EVER a situation where punting is more advantageous than maintaining possession. Never.

I want Iowa to have to punt as little as possible. If the Hawks have to punt the ball a lot then yes….punting is losing.

Calm down, Herman.

Nobody's claimed punting a high number of times is a good thing.

As explained in post #34, my comments were in advocation of a strong punt game. Pretty straightforward.

I've never argued that scoring isn't the main objective of an offense. I've pointed out that it isn’t always the objective.

And yes, people argue against that, by claiming that scoring in clock run situations is only a good thing.

No, maintaining possession is not always better than punting. Just as with scoring, sometimes the risk of trying to pick up a 3rd and long is just not worth it. Remember the 3rd down punts from Hayden?

I have never been against a strong punt game.

In your hypothetical 3rd and long situation…if there was only a minute left in the game and the opponent was out of timeouts….you don’t punt on 3rd down. Ever. You take a knee or sneak it to run the clock down. Then punt if need be.

But…picking up first downs is ALWAYS better than not picking them up. Always. And that is all I am trying to say. When I say “maintain possession” that means first downs are made.

We can argue semantics all day. We can play the situational game all day. Probably be best to just let this one die.

And my name’s not Herman. I don’t call you names, not sure why you have to stoop to calling me one.

I defy you to give me ONE example where NOT picking up a first down and punting is better than ACTUALLY picking up a first down. Not “trying” to pick one up….but actually getting a first down. It’s pretty straightforward.

Given that your last avatar was Pee-Wee Herman, I incorrectly assumed it wasn't something you'd take offense to. My apologies.

I guess I should have spaced them out with separate paragraphs to have been more clear. But the "3rd down punt" was mentioned as it's own aside. It was merely to show an example of when picking up the first down isn't the priority. Clearly, as 3rd down wasn't used to even attempt getting the first down.

Similarly, "clock run" and "3rd and long" were intended to be separate examples. Surely you've seen 3rd and longs when interceptions and sacks must be avoided to not give the other team yardage and possible momentum. Furthermore, the priority on yardage gets reinforced with a run on 3rd and long to help the punt team flip the field.

As for the "clock run" scenario. It extends beyond "last minute with no timeouts for the opposition". Playing the clock and being risk-adverse can extend to most of the 4th quarter with a 3 possession lead.

I defy you to tell me how first downs are picked up without trying for them. Moving the ball carries risk. Period. Some forms of trying to move the ball are more risky than others.

So, the only applicable example that needs to be shown is of an instance when attempting to punt is a better option than attempting to pick up a first down. And for that, I have many examples, starting with nearly every time in the history of the game that a coach chose to punt.

THE objective of an offense is to help its team win

No. I’m not talking about that….YOU are. That isn’t my point. My point is: picking up a first down is ALWAYS better than not picking it up. Nothing more, nothing less. You are trying to make this discussion about something that it isn’t.

I know what you are doing. You are intentionally being obtuse and adding different scenarios to avoid being seen as agreeing with me. Why, I don’t know. Would it really kill you to agree that picking up a first down is always better than not?

Or maybe you are just not understanding what it is I am saying.

Do you agree that picking up a first down is better than not picking up a first down? Yes or no? If no, give me an example where not picking up a first down and punting would be better than picking up a first down and retaining possession.
