No. I’m not talking about that….YOU are. That isn’t my point. My point is: picking up a first down is ALWAYS better than not picking it up. Nothing more, nothing less. You are trying to make this discussion about something that it isn’t.

I know what you are doing. You are intentionally being obtuse and adding different scenarios to avoid being seen as agreeing with me. Why, I don’t know. Would it really kill you to agree that picking up a first down is always better than not?

Or maybe you are just not understanding what it is I am saying.

Do you agree that picking up a first down is better than not picking up a first down? Yes or no? If no, give me an example where not picking up a first down and punting would be better than picking up a first down and retaining possession.
Picking up a first down vs not picking up a first down is not relevant. And I've already shown that to be the case.

Why would anyone ever choose to attempt punt if gaining a first down were only a matter of choice?

Again, the relevant appraisal is that of attempting to pick up a first down vs attempting to punt, run three times up the middle, kneel, etc.

Talk about obtuse.

I've already given examples of when a first down isn't the priority and there are more

Exactly! Now you’re getting it. You agree with me…it is always better to pick up a first down than not to pick up a first down. You did it in a roundabout way, but you finally did.

Kudos to you.

No. You seemed to have AGAIN missed the point.

Gaining a first down is NOT simply a matter of choice.

To gain it, certain things must be attempted, that at times are deemed to not be worth the risk

No, you are refusing to address my point that picking up a first down is always better than not picking up a first down. This was covered in posts #35, #37, and #40.

I never once said it was a matter of choice. I never once said anything about risk, or ATTEMPTING anything. YOU are the one who keeps bringing those things up.

Why won’t you answer a simple question? Why are you purposefully avoiding it?

Again I ask: Do you agree that it is better to pick up a first down than to not pick up a first down? This is a simple, general question that has NOTHING to do with risks, situations, attempts, score, time clock, etc. All it requires is a “yes”, or “no”.

Answer that, and I would be happy to discuss the points you brought up regarding situational punting advantages.

AGAIN, it is an irrelevant question. It does not apply to any actual football situation. It deserves no answer.

It isn’t a matter of what a coach would rather have, given the choice. It's a matter of what a coach chooses to prioritize. And that is not always the first down.

I just don't know another way to say it

It’s not meant to be relevant to anything. You either agree that it is better to pick up a first down than not pick up a first down, or you don’t. It’s a simple, GENERAL question not based on anything else. You are just refusing to answer. It is not intended to apply to any specific situation. It is really not hard to understand and I just don’t know any other way to say it. You are being purposefully obstinate.

If I were to say it’s better to score a touchdown than a field goal, you would argue about THAT.

I initiated the claim, that many fans carry the misconception that the objective of an offense is to score, earlier in the thread. I have provided supporting content that shows the claim to be accurate. This is really my only concern.

I've entertained your comments to the extent they have related to my claim (first downs and scoring both being forms of offensive production). In doing so, I showed that first downs are not the objective on an offense.

I'm sorry, but I find the theoretical question that you've tried to inject into the conversation, to be meaningless, and not of interest.

And yes, whether it's better to score a touchdown or a field goal is also irrelevant. The only thing relevant in that situation is whether it's better to attempt to score a TD, or whether it's better to attempt to make a FG

Good grief. No wonder people laugh at you.

You won't even answer a simple question. SMH.
