Years ago we used to stop a a very good sub shop on the way to the stadium (we are coming from the north). I think it was in Edison as we drove through the Livingston Campus after getting our subs there. Ate at the tailgate spot. Can't remember the name or where exactly it was though (if it still exists). Any recommendations on good sub shops in that area? Thanks in advance!

Sapore’s on Lincoln Blvd in Middlesex (an Italian catering/deli/ravioli shop) blows away ANY sub shop. Just a few miles from the stadium.
Looked them up. Since we will be coming from the north (probably either from 287 or 27) it looks like it's now between them and Tastee. Some excellent reviews on Yelp for this place!

Depends where you are coming from. I'm over in South Amboy, so my personal favorite is Big Wally's.

Coming from the north (I'm near Exit 153 on the Parkway)..... Either taking the Parkway South down to Rt 27 or Rt 80 West to 287 South, depending on traffic. Looks like Tastee is closer to Rt 27, looks like L&D Sapore closer to 287 South....

I sure miss Little Teddy's. Perfect stop. Put your order in and cross the street to Scarlet Fever. Say hi to Steve, grab a new shirt or hat. Back over to Little Teddy's get your delicious subs and head over to your tailgate. Every order included at least one Kitchen Sink!

Tastee subs are very good, and you get a very good classic sub. With Sapores you will get much more than what a sub shop offers (homemade/home cooked fresh ingredients, better bread, 2+ times more meat, fresh mozzarella, etc) and varieties a sub shop won’t offer. Try it if you want more than a sub. Can’t go wrong either way.

Anyone going to a chain sandwich shop in NJ is nuts

Subway is pretty much dog food. That being said - I'm not sure why some people here rave about Tastee. Most of the meats are likely from the same group of distributors as everywhere else (i.e. Hormel, Tyson, Dietz & Watson, Boars Head), the menu (below) is mundane and they have bins of pre-sliced lettuce, tomatoes and onions like everywhere else and IMO the bread is just OK (note that I grew up in Essex county with some of the best Italian breads). I've only been to Jersey Mike's a couple times for fundraisers for my son's soccer team but not sure there is that wide of a gap between them and Tastee.

By comparison - we've catered from an emerging chain, Primo Hoagies a few times at work and the selection, subs and sandwiches are much better than Tastee. You can get things like Chicken Cutlets, Fresh Mozz, Roasted Peppers, Sharp Provolone, Sopprassetta, Prosciutto and Broccoli Rabe....none of which are at Tastee.

Personally - when I have the choice, my preference is to go to small / Italian deli's rather than any sub shop, chain or not as they have their own special twist on subs and bring much better choices such as Fresh Mozz, Roasted Peppers and imported meats.

Joe's Meat Market in South Bound Brook is always good, meaty subs with good bread, https://joes-meatmarket.com/ . Can get off 287 at exit 12, stop at Joe's on Main street. Then it takes 10 minutes to the stadium from there, as Main St South Bound Brook turns into Easton Ave.

I had to look up Tastee and wasn't really that impressed. Like you are saying, get me the local deli where the bread is good, and they are slicing everything from the meat to the cheese, tomato, and everything else. I no longer have those here in Delaware but in Bergen Co...different story.

Now- if in a pinch, JM can do the job better than most of the chains but man...just get the sandwich from the little local spot. Though, I did cheat when in Franklin Lakes- Market Basket makes a damn good sub...

Roman Inn in Englewood, pre-gentrification, was unbelievable for subs. Line outside the door every day. Alas the original owners sold and retired about 15 years ago. Now a sit down emphasizing pizza and upscale .

OK - Now it's between L&D Sapore and Joe's.... Anybody had both? Usually just get an italian sub, sometimes tuna if the tuna sub is good. Steak and peppers if I want hot (was just in AC and got the steak and peppers one from White House Subs - very good).

Used to go the Market Basket to pick up lunch when I worked up that way. Loved it. Bergen Co. definitely had it's share of great places to eat. Kosher Nosh for sandwiches, Kinchley's for Pizza, Hot Grill for dogs were just a few among the places we would go for lunch.

We also had Wilkes Deli right across the street from my house in Mahwah. Great small local Deli. Funny thing here in Delaware - if you really want a good sandwich, the best way is going to Acme Supermarket and go to the deli counter and have them make you a fresh sandwich.

I have ordered lunch/dinner and catering from both Joe‘s and Sapores (for family events and for tailgating). Joe‘s is very good and makes a nice “messy” sloppy Joe, but for me Sapores is the better choice. I don’t have anything bad to say about Joe’s you can get sandwiches you’ll be happy with. For what it’s worth over the years I used Joe’s 4 or 5 times but Sapores is the go to and I get sandwiches and many other items often. Good luck, it’s nice having choices.

PS - Sapores Italian sub is called the Dom, I’m not a little guy but I can only eat a half😉

Hot Grill? I switch between Hot Grill and Rutts depending on where I was last (I'm in Clifton).......

Kinchley's if you're up by Ramsey or Mahwah. Brooklyn Pizza if you're around Ridgewood or Hackensack

food-related question.. BTN crew gave Cioffi's a positive comment for Rutgers always being great hosts and it showed a deli spread from Cioffi's as well as pizza. I know we had players with that name.. assume there is a relationship but do not know for sure. But teh restaurant appears to be in Union.. pretty far from the stadium.. no one closer could be relied upon? We get a good deal there? Pretty far for pizza delivery.

Yes, this is the family of Anthony Cioffi--his father and Uncle run and own the deli. The connection to Rutgers football is there, and they get free advertising for delivering some food. Seems like a good deal for the deli. And the food is said to be great.

Anthony bounced around various professional leagues after graduating in 2017.

His cousins ran Pepe's Pizza and Restaurant in my town for over 35 years before they retired and passed the business/recipes to the current owners. Really nice people who would always ask me about the team and how Anthony was doing. They wanted to go see his games but they were working all the time. Anthony was a really nice guy too. Met him on occasion for work-related stuff.

iirc, Anthony was fast as hell and, I assume, he ate that food on the regular.

Im gonna let you in on a little secret...

Primo Hoagies uses Thumanns meats that they label for Primo Hoagies

No one comes close to Thumanns cold cuts.

Boars Head is overrated garbage with filthy manufacturing facilities that killed 10 people with Listeria last summer. And Dietz...its just ok

Family party tomorrow...getting a few platters from Primo Hoagies myself, cant wait!

All depends on what you like. I've been eating Tastee Subs for 45 years and they're great. Love the bread and they slice all of the meats (Boar's Head, which I like) fresh in front of you (same with the tomatoes and onions; the lettuce is cut on site and put in bags for that day's use - it's very fresh). They don't put as much meat/cheese on as most Italian delis, but we're ok with that, as some of those places just overdo it, IMO. All they do is subs and everything is as fresh as can be.
