I agree. But sometimes it just can't happen ... think David Robinson ... he grew too tall during his 4 years at Navy.

why should ring tappers get to choose when they serve after signing a contract with the military, Rocky Bleier wasn’t given that choice.

No, it really can't. A growth spurt after the age of 17/18 is very rare. Especially the growth spurt David Robinson had. If he was that tall at the age of 17, he would have never been able to get into the academy, I believe.

Robison and others could have been assigned shore side, he didn't have to serve in airplane, submarine or surface ship, the obligation was to serve upon graduating. These "deferred" service suggestions never happen. They were given an awesome 4 year education for free. Should non athletic graduates be allowed to defer??? No!!!! Meet your obligations

IIRC he (Robinson) may have gotten some type of waiver. I think he was either 6'6" or 6'7" at the time.
I was and still am a Robinson fan.
Loved the Spurs during his time.

There is a height requirement to enter the Naval Academy because of the architecture of the ships, subs and Navy planes. 6'6" might have been it. I don't recall his height when he entered the Academy, but 7'1" was not it, otherwise he would have been a no - go.

Considering how elevated our society places athletics and athletes, why should this guy not get a deferral so he can enjoy a pro career? Given the statistics, his pro career would only be 2 years or so, and then he can enter his service. It's not that big of a deal.

Not to mention all the good publicity and exposure he (Robinson) gave to the Navy. It was more than a fair trade off...IMO.

They (and the Senate) are the only ones who can change this rule - not the DoD, not the Academies. So, they have to chew on the chicklet, whether they like it or not.

Some things do take an Act of Congress. This is one of them.
