Shelby 21 vs Crest 19 final

I was so petrified of Justin Foster going into this game that there were times I'd look into a mirror and his image would look back at me. I'd lay in the bed, couldn't quite sleep, and he'd cross my mind, making me restless, honestly.

Crest has a great defense. They have some speedy athletes who can tackle very well, they have size, too. They show signs of having a capable offense, but they are missing that bell cow running back they are accustomed to having. They certainly did the right thing settling in w/ Peeler at quarterback, he was impressive.

Shelby had their struggles on offense, but that's a testament to the Charger D. Shelby posters, most of you are a classy bunch, you guys are my homies. Lol... But, don't hold back on me. I am a humble dude and have thick skin when it comes to football talk. The quarterback held the ball for far too long putting our offensive line in even tougher situations as is. We all see that he needs to make more plays w/ his feet, run the ball. He's strong and has decent straight line speed, but is far too reluctant to run the ball. We need those chains moving, when the going gets tough. Crest had a great game plan, though. He hadn't seen the things they threw at him, in addition to that monstrous #35, #32, and others coming at him. He was confused, it was a learning experience for him.

Both teams can make a run at it, once again, but I saw boneheaded penalties and plays from both teams that left me dumbfounded. We clean those things up, and we will be fine. I, too, hate to see an end to this conference. Say what you want, but it was a good conference, indeed.

Not sure what you're referring to here. I watched both team shake hands down the long line after the game.

LA, imo not always his fault, we still want to play deep ball, in HS the time in pocket is slim, i feel short routes, not sideline to sideline like we have done, but short screens etc would benefit us.
I agree id love seeing him run more, if that middle clears out.
But hes done whats expected of him, he didnt have a great game, but a pretty fair game last night.
Alot to do with Crest D.
Crest couldnt stop our run last nite, the focused on Borders.
We will be fine, doubt we see a D like Crest has again.

I agree ! I had lunch with a long time Crest fan yesterday I told him I thought it was gonna be a 21-17 type game ! I knew we'd get the best effort from the Chargers ... just my thoughts here and just my thoughts alone

We looked way too much for the long ball most passing plays ! Last night in particular the middle of the field was open all night long . Second half we did a much better job of finding the drag routes underneath . Foster had his way with our right side in the first half last night that's for sure . I do think a couple times Malik held the ball too long however I think it was due to the fact he hadn't seen that type coverage up to that point in the season! Crest had an outstanding defensive game plan last night , mixed up their coverages and blitzed at different times even on a delayed blitz a couple times ! Usually we can out athlete that type defensive plan but when we are faced with athletes as good as and in some cases a bit better than some of ours it breaks down. Hundred percent agree last night was a great learning experience for Malik. He got a little rattled at the end of the second quarter but in the second half we adjusted blocked Foster a bit better and he stayed poised and calm in the second half . He stood in there and delivered it finding the underneath passes much better after the half ... the touchdown drive he took us down the field like a seasoned veteran .. he will only get better than he already is ! I know you are proud and he is going to be special ... can't wait to see what he does as a senior ... hey he is undefeated as a starting QB for the Golden Lions that says a lot about his leadership out there leading this offense ... proud of him and his team they have done a great job this season so far ... go get em Lions

Hey Shelby fans, its been fun having you guys in the conference the last 7-8 years or so. always been a battle the last part of the regular season and had so much on the line (minus last 2 seasons) Guess it will just be a rivalry game from now on with no conference implications. GL in the playoffs

Also, I had a pretty good look and I don't think Brintley scored on the goal line TD for Crest. The Shelby D Line created a wall and he ran right into it. I can only guess that he extended the ball over the goal line somehow and then lost the ball??

Shelby was held on left side all nite, plus just saw a pic where facemask on Truck was no call, point is terrible reffs, seen it all year.
If they cant get it right let game go, stop killing rhythm.

No one from crest needs to be talking about being held cause # 41 held just about every play in the Burns game . I'm talking a full rap up tackle right in front of the refs. One of ours kids ask the ref to watch him and got a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty on their first td drive .

Junior year, at Crest, in front of maybe 10,000 fans....that was a huge stage for him. In '97, 3rd game of the year, our starting center tore his ACL on that very stage and I came in and played my first snap at center as a varsity Golden Lion. Needless to say, the defender blew by me and sacked Norris. I challenged myself to get better and ended up making All-Conference that year and in '98. That stage is a little terrifying.

I feel like he did hold the ball too long. Could be more the play calling than him needing to hold the ball that long. We swing for the homerun far too often. As mentioned earlier, the short middle was open all night. When you have a player like Jayden Borders, he needs touch the ball at least 1 out of 3 plays. I asked him after the game why we didn't run the jet sweep to him and he said they practiced it all week but just didn't call it. I think if we would have ran that away from Foster's side, we would have had several more points. Jayden in space is nearly unstoppable and if you try, he is gonna run your *** over.

Foster was somewhat a non-factor I felt like in this game. Did he have just that one sack where Hartgrove had him blocked and fanning out and Malik didn't step up in the pocket and kinda rolled out into Foster? If I recall, that was the only sack but I could be wrong. I thought our game plan might would change up and we would move Clark to the right side to block Foster but honestly, Hartgrove did a fantastic job blocking the Clemson commit imo. We definitely didn't take advantage of our opportunities. We would run the ball into the redzone then get happy and start trying to throw it around. You have to play to what the defense gives you and having 3 safeties playing 15 yards of the ball gives you plenty of running room. I like Gullate in the backfield....he gets moving.

Malik will continue to improve and as mentioned, he is 11-0 as a Shelby starting QB. There are only 3 previous QBs that have done that....Mike Beatty in '72, Norris Hopper in '97, and Darryl Montgomery in '06. That's impressive. Hopefully moving forward, we will make adjustments mid game and start taking what the defense gives us and not just swing for the fences all the time.

These playoffs should be fun....wish we didn't have to wait a week.

A-B-A-Bdog: I also noted that I didn't think that Crest got in the endzone on their first score. Just because I saw Foster being held, it doesn't mean I'm a Crest fan.

Foster dominated the game. Kept us in one little corner of the field for three quarters trying to avoid him. He's the real deal, and at least for Friday, he was the best on the field.
Now, on to our QB who probably didn't have his best game Friday night. He kept his head, he didn't give up, and he didn't get scared. He's had a great year on the field, but that only means so much. You see, last Saturday there was this goofy little white kid getting some new Nike's at the mall. He looks up and says "Dad, there's Malik Surratt! Can I go talk to him?" Knowing Surratt's dad, I figured the young man might be up for giving this little guy a high five. He didn't. He stopped what he was doing and spent about five minutes asking my son about himself and encouraging him to work hard. My boy came back feeling like he had just hung out with Cam Newton.

Our QB is going to succeed, one way or another. He gets it.
