Dat, I don't get what you're implying about worldview? I have to "accept" world view? WTF does that even mean? So if the world thinks it's right I have to? ummmm nah.

hahah. Oh Dat , I love you dude. I knew I'd get you all fired up with a novel come back. You turned it towards the 'black" thing, I wasn't even referencing that, I just thought the scarf looked dumb. I agree we shouldn't have a thread called Carter looks like a fool though, poor taste. Pisgah, I say we wear kilts to ctc.

I’m game now LOL

Hey I liked black panther too. I also like bravehart but I will never ever wear a kilt
Braveheart you say? Now theres a great movie and they even wore clothing from my ancestors and the blue war paint on Mel made it even better. Gibson is a great actor and I always thought Braveheart was his best work. The Pink Panther were great movies also.

Dat, I truly don't understand your angle, I don't know if you just called me a racist, a commie, or a bad fashion designer.
Come on Show, you know Dat just likes to argue and have the last word and he always defends what he feels is oppressed even if its not.

It’s just all part of the nba culture. Anything to draw attention to yourself. I get it. That’s one of the reasons I don’t watch it. Happy for the Duke players that got drafted though.

I'm sure you weren't referencing that. I trust your character that much. That doesn't necessarily mean it has nothing to do w/ that for anyone else or that we don't sometimes step on people's toes inadvertently.

As a young pup, fresh out of college, I heard the name "Jabari" for the first time. I remember thinking at the time that it was some silly, made-up name. After hearing it many times over the years and actually getting a little experience under my belt, I recognize it has legit history and dignity behind it. (It's Swahili, means "brave.") Do you understand what I'm getting at?

I think there's a significant and important distinction between "not my style" and "looks dumb." I don't think it falls into some caricature of the PC warrior or SJW trope to say so.

Racism is not as common as liberals would like us to believe.
...nor as rare as conservatives claim.

FTR, though, I specifically pointed out that I wasn't calling anything racist, and pretty clearly indicated that that would have been inappropriate. If this turns into some indignant defense against accusations of racism, it's fake news.

I can appreciate you were not calling anyone out as racist. But it is hard to hear from liberals on a daily basis be it in the media, message boards, etc. and not pick up on this constant under current they share that says everyone on earth who is not a white, straight, christian male is somehow disenfranchised. I don't know about you but I have not been fortunate enough to sign a bagillion dollar shoe deal at the age of 18.

It's not about right or wrong, and thinking of it in those terms is probably going to make any further consideration of it seem confrontational.

I mean different perspectives, primarily based on different cultural experiences. If we're talking about clitorectomies, no, we don't have to accept/tolerate that (b/c it's definitely wrong), but if it's the thumbs-up sign essentially being the equivalent of the middle finger in Italy, we should accept/understand that (b/c it's merely different), and then probably avoid using it for the more common American purpose when in Rome. It's respectful, not censorship or "PC."

Sometimes when we think something is dumb, we're right. Sometimes when we think something is dumb, it might be that we just don't get it.

A good rule of thumb is to train yourself to recognize where it might have something to do with cultural differences, and if it is, presume humbly that it's a situation where you just don't get it. Otherwise you risk enforcing supremacist culture, even if you didn't mean to. At the very least, it's disrespectful.

Trae Young's suit? Dumb. Wendell's? No.
Dat, I am with you all of the way, excepting your reference to "supremacist culture". I agree that we should be sensitive to differences based upon cultural tastes and preferences, and that disrespecting someone as "dumb" because of his wardrobe choices and/or personal tastes is wrong. If there is really such a thing as "supremacist culture" (which I personally doubt), I do not think that this one tasteless comment on this board could be rationally viewed as capable of enforcing anything. To me, avoiding the enforcement of supremacist culture is not a reason for doing anything, respecting others and their cultures is. But that is just politically incorrect me. I do note that you labelled Trae Young's choice as "dumb", which directly infers that Trae was dumb for choosing it.

What one must realize is all those players with tablecloths on and clothes made from window curtains think they ARE dressed correctly. Its just the sign of this ever-changing times. Remember, they are representing.

If you're everybody's friend, you're going to care about how they see it, too. It's not all "accept me as I am" and it's not all "cater to my every whim."

For example, we throw the word "rape" around pretty cavalierly and figuratively sometimes: The winning sports team that outsported their sports opponent in the sporting contest raped the losing sports team. If the people you were talking to included someone you knew was an actual, literal rape survivor, you'd be a total d-bag not to modify your vocab in that situation, right?

True. I’d probably wear either an American flag suit or a Hawaiian shirt and pant combo. I bet so many people would laugh at me but I’d be representing stuff I like so I wouldn’t care LOL

Good post, and I don't think we disagree even there. I'm using that term in a specific, longstanding academic way, which is less common than how most people use it (including me, most of the time). I'm using it more to mean "dominant culture to the point of exclusion," and at least in part, yeah, the solution is being respectful.

A Constitutional example would be where the rights of the individual have to be protected ahead of the preferences of the majority. Outside of Dearborn, Michigan, there aren't many places where you're going to find more halal restaurants than BBQ joints, but on hot dog day at school, there has to be a Muslim (and Jewish) alternative.

Nah, smart people can make dumb decisions, so I'm not referring to Trae Young's overall intelligence. I mentioned his flood's-a-comin' suit to illustrate how it's not all this or that; we can make reasonable, nuanced distinctions.

lol
What, exactly, are they representing, though? I think some of them are just taking a big fashion risk, and it's no more serious than that. If I learned that Trae Young squeezed into a suit belonging to a 9-year-old in hospice who had some weird Make-a-Wish request, I'd eat some crow over calling it dumb, but until then, that's one outfit I feel pretty safe calling out. If Wendell comes out and says he just likes superheroes and next time he's going to dress like Green Lantern, I'll eat some crow over bringing up concern about being culturally respectful.

Yet another Hall of Fame post. Same thing many of us say to people outside of sports and they usually come back with some “status quo means that was always the right way and whoever complains about it is too sensitive” ignorance

The bold would imply that what I said wasn't genuine and doesn't have any merit.

Ever hear of Indian Schools, show? That started with the basic premise that our way was better than their way, and that we'd back our opinion by force. It's an extreme example, but sometimes that's what it takes to impress a point upon someone. Is condemnation of Indian Schools today just "political correctness"?

What you have the right to say and what you should say aren't always exactly the same, and what you have the right to say doesn't mean you're immune from consequences. Take me, for example: I have the right to say what I said. You have the right to say back to me what you said. Note that I'm not whining about it; I'm coming back at you b/c the whole I idea of saying your peace and "moving on" is based on the idea that words have no consequences. If we're talking Team Ranch v Team Bleu Cheese, sure. Where we're talking something that chips away at respect and equity -- particularly with groups who've traditionally and historically been oppressed and still struggle w/ such issues today -- agreeing to disagree can translate into accepting lower status.

If by "politically correct" you mean I choose my words carefully, you bet I do. I was deliberate in not accusing anyone of being a racist for hatin' on a black dude's black-inspired attire; I parsed it as "we" b/c I'm not immune to similar missteps if I'm not careful; I'm responding thoroughly, patiently, and politely to you right now.

Further, I don't think I've posted here in over a week before today, so I don't really know what others have been posting in the interim, but my single post doesn't qualify as the political correctness run amok you seem to be implying.

So in your eyes The Luka kid is doing it right but everyone else is doing it wrong correct? I’ve heard that same logic as far as Hair style as well. So basically if they don’t dress like you then it’s not the correct way to dress? And definitely no flashy dressing.

Just plain salt and mayo with zero seasoning lol

That would be breaking the flag law and there would be a lot of outrage because we found out his past football season that disrespecting the flag is a no no. Although even the flag law says specifically that wearing it as clothing is disrespectful people do it anyway yet no outrage. Very interesting

Zero wrong with what anyone said in that picture. Now if one starts saying their race is superior and the others are inferior and should be slaves or give them horrible nick names then it becomes a problem.

According to Liberals, you are a racist. Just accept it man.

Call me crazy but Trae Youngs short suit was tight. All those kids looked good, props to them for wearing what they wanted.

Anyone who doesn't like the way the younger generation dresses has to accept it.... The PGA tour had to when Rickie Fowler burst onto the scene, now go to every golf course and you'll see more people dressed like him than Ernie Els.... NBA really embraces their players uniqueness and I applaud them for it.

The "ok" gesture, where you connect your index finger to your thumb in a circular shape, and you extend out the other three fingers, is the equivalent of two middle fingers in South America. Make note of that.

I think as a general rule of thumb, it's probably best not to talk. Or make gestures. Or look at anyone. Odds are, you're likely to offend someone. I'm going to sit in my corner and talk to myself, thank you very much.

A couple of non-Duke attending ******** chiming in on this thread. A fool? Trying to be the biggest clown ever?

That's our guy. If he wants to do something with a little nod to African heritage, who the **** are you to say a damn word?

If you don't have something nice to say about what one of our guys is WEARING... I mean, something as unimportant to basketball as their f'ing CLOTHES... ESPECIALLY if you actually have no real connection to Duke... hell, lemme amend that... if you not only want to criticize, but be a giant dick about it? STFU.

I think it's okay for anyone to wear whatever the heck they want. No biggie. But it's also okay for anyone of us to have a little fun and ridicule the way some of the overpaid athletes dress. This is kind of similar to the national anthem debates. It doesn't bother me if players want to take a knee. No biggie. That's their right as Americans. But I also have a right as an American to criticize their actions if I feel it's misguided.
