hahah. Oh Dat , I love you dude. I knew I'd get you all fired up with a novel come back. You turned it towards the 'black" thing, I wasn't even referencing that, I just thought the scarf looked dumb. I agree we shouldn't have a thread called Carter looks like a fool though, poor taste. Pisgah, I say we wear kilts to ctc.
Braveheart you say? Now theres a great movie and they even wore clothing from my ancestors and the blue war paint on Mel made it even better. Gibson is a great actor and I always thought Braveheart was his best work. The Pink Panther were great movies also.Hey I liked black panther too. I also like bravehart but I will never ever wear a kilt
Come on Show, you know Dat just likes to argue and have the last word and he always defends what he feels is oppressed even if its not.Dat, I truly don't understand your angle, I don't know if you just called me a racist, a commie, or a bad fashion designer.
I'm sure you weren't referencing that. I trust your character that much. That doesn't necessarily mean it has nothing to do w/ that for anyone else or that we don't sometimes step on people's toes inadvertently. You turned it towards the 'black" thing, I wasn't even referencing that, I just thought the scarf looked dumb. I agree we shouldn't have a thread called Carter looks like a fool though, poor taste.
Nope.Come on Show, you know Dat just likes to argue and have the last word and he always defends what he feels is oppressed even if its not.
...nor as rare as conservatives claim.Racism is not as common as liberals would like us to believe.
...nor as rare as conservatives claim.
FTR, though, I specifically pointed out that I wasn't calling anything racist, and pretty clearly indicated that that would have been inappropriate. If this turns into some indignant defense against accusations of racism, it's fake news.
It's not about right or wrong, and thinking of it in those terms is probably going to make any further consideration of it seem confrontational.Dat, I don't get what you're implying about worldview? I have to "accept" world view? WTF does that even mean? So if the world thinks it's right I have to? ummmm nah.
Fair enough.I can appreciate you were not calling anyone out as racist. But it is hard to hear from liberals on a daily basis be it in the media, message boards, etc. and not pick up on this constant under current they share that says everyone on earth who is not a white, straight, christian male is somehow disenfranchised. I don't know about you but I have not been fortunate enough to sign a bagillion dollar shoe deal at the age of 18.
Dat, I am with you all of the way, excepting your reference to "supremacist culture". I agree that we should be sensitive to differences based upon cultural tastes and preferences, and that disrespecting someone as "dumb" because of his wardrobe choices and/or personal tastes is wrong. If there is really such a thing as "supremacist culture" (which I personally doubt), I do not think that this one tasteless comment on this board could be rationally viewed as capable of enforcing anything. To me, avoiding the enforcement of supremacist culture is not a reason for doing anything, respecting others and their cultures is. But that is just politically incorrect me. I do note that you labelled Trae Young's choice as "dumb", which directly infers that Trae was dumb for choosing it.Sometimes when we think something is dumb, we're right. Sometimes when we think something is dumb, it might be that we just don't get it.
A good rule of thumb is to train yourself to recognize where it might have something to do with cultural differences, and if it is, presume humbly that it's a situation where you just don't get it. Otherwise you risk enforcing supremacist culture, even if you didn't mean to. At the very least, it's disrespectful.
Trae Young's suit? Dumb. Wendell's? No.

As a young pup, fresh out of college, I heard the name "Jabari" for the first time. I remember thinking at the time that it was some silly, made-up name. After hearing it many times over the years and actually getting a little experience under my belt, I recognize it has legit history and dignity behind it. (It's Swahili, means "brave.") Do you understand what I'm getting at?
I think there's a significant and important distinction between "not my style" and "looks dumb." I don't think it falls into some caricature of the PC warrior or SJW trope to say so.
If you're everybody's friend, you're going to care about how they see it, too. It's not all "accept me as I am" and it's not all "cater to my every whim."I think me NOT being a racist gets me in trouble sometimes because I speak freely. Then it always ends up in a OOOOooooooooo you can't say that, that may get misinterpreted. Ahhh screw that. I'm everybody's friend, call it like i see it. I'm not getting wrapped up in the foolishness.
What one must realize is all those players with tablecloths on and clothes made from window curtains think they ARE dressed correctly. Its just the sign of this ever-changing times. Remember, they are representing.
Good post, and I don't think we disagree even there. I'm using that term in a specific, longstanding academic way, which is less common than how most people use it (including me, most of the time). I'm using it more to mean "dominant culture to the point of exclusion," and at least in part, yeah, the solution is being respectful.Dat, I am with you all of the way, excepting your reference to "supremacist culture". With those clothes trying to look like a character from Black Panther.

lolYou rather he wear a red hat, cut off checkered shirt with some jorts I bet
The bold would imply that what I said wasn't genuine and doesn't have any merit.
Ever hear of Indian Schools, show? That started with the basic premise that our way was better than their way, and that we'd back our opinion by force. It's an extreme example, but sometimes that's what it takes to impress a point upon someone. Is condemnation of Indian Schools today just "political correctness"?
What you have the right to say and what you should say aren't always exactly the same, and what you have the right to say doesn't mean you're immune from consequences. Take me, for example: I have the right to say what I said. You have the right to say back to me what you said. Note that I'm not whining about it; I'm coming back at you b/c the whole I idea of saying your peace and "moving on" is based on the idea that words have no consequences. If we're talking Team Ranch v Team Bleu Cheese, sure. Where we're talking something that chips away at respect and equity -- particularly with groups who've traditionally and historically been oppressed and still struggle w/ such issues today -- agreeing to disagree can translate into accepting lower status.
If by "politically correct" you mean I choose my words carefully, you bet I do. I was deliberate in not accusing anyone of being a racist for hatin' on a black dude's black-inspired attire; I parsed it as "we" b/c I'm not immune to similar missteps if I'm not careful; I'm responding thoroughly, patiently, and politely to you right now.
Further, I don't think I've posted here in over a week before today, so I don't really know what others have been posting in the interim, but my single post doesn't qualify as the political correctness run amok you seem to be implying.
lol
I would hope no one would be that obvious, but if you look at the picture below...

...and say, "Why can't everyone dress classy like that nice Luka Donkey kid?" well...
Braveheart you say? Now theres a great movie and they even wore clothing from my ancestors and the blue war paint on Mel made it even better. Gibson is a great actor and I always thought Braveheart was his best work. The Pink Panther were great movies also.
True. I’d probably wear either an American flag suit or a Hawaiian shirt and pant combo. I bet so many people would laugh at me but I’d be representing stuff I like so I wouldn’t care LOL
According to Liberals, you are a racist. Just accept it man.

but if it's the thumbs-up sign essentially being the equivalent of the middle finger in Italy, we should accept/understand that (b/c it's merely different), and then probably avoid using it for the more common American purpose when in Rome. It's respectful, not censorship or "PC."
Hey I liked black panther too. I also like bravehart but I will never ever wear a kilt
Are you Scottish? If yes, then you SHOULD wear a kilt. Show some damn pride. If not, then no, you shouldn't. Duh.
No I’m american
Then why the hell would you even be talking about wearing a kilt?
No! I'm saying if that is what someone thinks, there might be a wee bit of an issue there, to put it mildly...So in your eyes The Luka kid is doing it right but everyone else is doing it wrong correct? I’ve heard that same logic as far as Hair style as well. So basically if they don’t dress like you then it’s not the correct way to dress? And definitely no flashy dressing.
Just plain salt and mayo with zero seasoning lol
