It’s me again. Please, my son is considering buying a home in Manville Boro. Does anyone have good insight into this area? Thanks so much in advance.

Lots of stuff to do in the nearby areas—Rutgers games, the Zimmerli, ice skating rinks, Somerset Patriots games, hiking and canoeing/kayaking in all the parks, State Theater for concerts and plays, a zillion restaurants, Bridgewater Commons plus a gazillion other stores, Duke Gardens, Rutgers Gardens

There's a Delilah's Den at 18 Washington Ave, if that sort of place would be a problem or a benefit, depending on one's needs/perspective.

Redditt has some threads on Manville. May have flooding issues?

Weston is your best bet. As mentioned, avoid Lost Valley. Sections of North and South Sides also prone to flooding.

I looked at Manville about 13 years ago. One house was by the GS. The realtor told me that the neighborhood itself doesn't flood, but is basically in a donut hole, surrounded by flood zone. So you may not lose everything, but you will not be able to get out.
Of the towns in the area, Manville would not be (and wasn't) my choice.

Yes, Manville is located at the confluence of the Millstone and South Branch of the Raritan River. During big storms it floods and the areas that do not flood become an island.

Anytime I hear Manvilpe I think of Franks chicken house
I think of the Polish deli I used to go to there. The Polacks that owned the place barely spoke English. They had the Kielbasa hanging from the ceiling. Wonder if it's still there. That and of course the flooding but that's just certain areas as I understand it.

The Polish Pickle Deli is still there (right next to the high school property). Had been wanting to stop by there for a couple of years and finally did after working a Saturday soccer game at Bridgewater High School. Most of the people inside including customers spoke Polish. Bought two kielbasas, one for me and one for my neighbor who was born in Poland. A couple sitting at an outside table said they drove an hour & a half to get there. Am definitely going back to try other products.

I miss the kielbasa from that deli. Had family that used to bring it on visits but they moved out of the area.

How old is your son? What is he looking for in a new home/town? Somerville as previously discussed might be a solid start for a home (in the right sections-mostly closer to Bridgewater) if he's thinking of starting or has a family. If he's a GenZ/younger millennial the downtown Somerville condos look like a fun place within walking distance to train station and Main St action. Manville has some decent neighborhoods closer to Hillsborough, but the school system is in pretty bad shape right now.

Thanks but it basically comes down to cost. He makes six figures but the range he qualifies for is such a crazy market. Houses in the 400-500k range going for 30-40k over asking. There’s not many choices in his price range.

Lot of old Polish folk and lot of drinking in that town.

Rented with some guys in my 20s off Brooks Blvd. Walked to Chester House few times and drank with locals who lived upstairs. They would come down in their slippers and what looked like pajamas. They did have shuffle baord.

May be able to find pretty nice townhouses in Bridgewater in that $range?

Small ranches in Finderne section of Bridgewater are the most affordable for those who want in Bridgewater schools. Around Bell Aire Park. (Fairmont Ave, Marie Ave, etc)

Due to flooding / schools not being up to par, I'd be looking at Bound Brook / Middlesex /Pway / Dunnellon / S. Plainfield
All similar towns in a way to Manville but without the headaches of the two aforementioned issues

Had family that lived in a Bridgewater section wedged in between B.B. and Middlesex off Mountain Ave. It's been a couple decades (lol) but back then the neighborhoods were very nice and not overly extravagant.
